I came here for dinner with my wife and daughter (23) to enjoy a delicious ‘Michelin Guide’ super restaurant. The location was superb as was the ambience, weather, decor and layout. However, we came for a meal and the main ingredient was food. Alas, this was where the wheels came off the cart.
There clearly is an Italian influence here - the do Parmaggiano in a style of their own (apparently). Normally this dish which is a classic egg-plant, courgette, onion, pepper tomatoes and cheese roast godsend. However, at San Rocco this became quite a comical four tiny slithers of zucchini served with little blobs of soft cheese and ketchup. There was enough on the plate for a mouthful and quite frankly the thought of ketchup makes me feel queasy (sick). We laughed. And it cost €15! The joke was on us. Clearly. We ordered it - we ate it -we paid for it. It was terrible.
For mains, we ordered pasta, ravioli and lamb (cooked for 24 hours) served, again with ketchup. Apart from one slice of potatoe there were no vegetables or sides even though it was explained by the knowledgeable waiter that the dish comes with vegetables. Alas - not true.
We also made a mistake with the ravioli Stuffed with fish and served with some orange sauce. This dish cost €20 and comprised 3 ravioli (enough to feed a small child). This was a main course! The other problem was that we forgot to ask the Chef to cook them. They were served frozen! We were not sure if they were meant to come this way. My wife ate one! When we explained this to the waiter he hurriedly took the two remaining ravioli back and promised to provide us with cooked ones. Fiasco.
The pasta with mushroom sauce was absolutely tasteless and again tiny. Hugely expensive again.
At least we laughed as this was all that was left. We were astonished that people frequented this restaurant as it is astonishingly expensive, the food is at best mediocre and the portions are TINY. We had high hopes for this venue primarily because of the reviews but how can a professional Chef serve frozen salmon ravioli? We paid the bill without question but wonder if anyone really considered what they ate at this restaurant. It would never survive in London or any place with a slither of competition. It is worth a visit if you are rich, not hungry and and are happy with frozen mediocrity. I for one would prefer some grilled squid, pizza, salad or anything in fact which is tasty, fresh and cooked.
