SakaMai New York Reviews from The Last Year
I visited earlier this year for dinner alone after leaving
I visited earlier this year for dinner alone after leaving a traumatic situation. I have been in social isolation since 2020, so my social queues are likely delayed. I wanted to take personal photos with no flash for memories, not an influencer or on social media. I realized during my first dish I had not bowed back to the staff, was too busy trying to feel in place outside in public. The second dish I ordered I thought I would be able to deconstruct myself, but it was disassembled by staff quickly after being served. I ate as quickly as I could and went home. I hope I did not display disrespect to any members of the establishment, and that I was just not aware of the dining custom.
Came here for dinner and the ambiance was nice.
The dimmed light was a vibe. However, the food here was mediocre. My favorite dishes here were the beef tartare and the egg on egg on egg. Having that said, the main course items we ordered did not live up to the expectation. The bread for the wagyu sandwich was a bit dry. The duck breast was a bit too salty and there was nothing to cleanse the plate after each bite. The oysters were alright, they were just on the smaller end. For the price, I don't think it was worth it.
Really great spot in the lower east side with incredible
Really great spot in the lower east side with incredible service and amazing and unique food. From tableside uni pasta to those amazing Wagyu sandwiches, this place was full of surprises. Not crowded and super chill. They also had a good assortment of beverages Highly recommended
I can not say I was entirely impressed by this place and
I can not say I was entirely impressed by this place and it's food. Although the dishes were succulent and indulgent as a party of five we all left pretty much unfulfilled and felt like a glob of oil and grease afterwards. Ambience and service was great, the waiters and waitresses were helpful and made the experience fun. Our waiter explained every dish and even gave us time to record the mixing of the uni pasta. I do warn, those who have a sensitive nose might not find the smell here pleasant. There is this herbal smoke essence and flows through the restaurant and it might be pleasant to others but personally I found it nauseating. Food: Karrage: crispy and large pieces of juicy dark chicken meat. The sauce was the highlight , the chicken itself was not entirely crispy and only had parts that were. But we did appreciate the batter to meat ratio, about 9:1 Crispy octopus: delicious delicious delicious. The octopus was not fried but it still somehow had a delicate crispy texture but also remaining soft and tender on the inside. I highly recommend getting this as an appetizer! Dry aged duck with crispy mushrooms: This was what most of my party looked forward to as we all enjoy duck. While others found it delicious and tasty I personally found the meat itself to be a bit gamey and couldn't eat past one bite. This is a warning to others who tend to not have a tongue towards the gamey meats. My party on the other hand loved the dish, but wished the duck pieces were cut a bit smaller. Fried mushroom was amazing , I mean let's be honest, fried anything is amazing ! Flank Steak: This dish was my personal favorite. Tender steak topped with a delicious garlic scallion sauce and the fingerling potatoes. It was salty and indulgent and delicious! Uni Pasta: As a person who never had uni or even tried this was a big big challenge. The uni itself was pungent and strong , paired with the bone marrow made this dish very very over powering. We each only had one serving before calling it quits. As per my friends words, the uni quality itself would be considered medium , not terrible aka not garbage tasting but also not sweet like the high quality uni's they've had. Wagyu Katsu Sando: The dish that everyone comes for ! This was a collective agreement from all five of us that night, either pick the uni pasta or this. Because having both was way over the top! Both dishes were oily and packed a punch, if you had to come please pick either or and not both ! But the meat itself was fatty and juicy, not too overly sweet or salty and the bread was crispy and toasted. Overall I would say this is a place most people can try once and be happy with it. I do recommend coming with a larger group to try all their dishes
Love love loved this japanese restaurant! They seated me
Love love loved this japanese restaurant! They seated me right away even though I told them my party was going to be 20 mins late. The service was great throughout the whole meal. The food was even more amazing. My friends and I savored each bite we took because it was so delicious. There was not one thing that was bad. The steak tartare came with this sauce on top that you mix and it was very fresh. The egg on egg on egg was flavorful and the crispy octopus was tender. We also got the duck which came cooked perfectly medium. The star of the show was the uni mazemen and they scrape the bone marrow on top in front of you and mix. It's also the last dish because it's the heaviest. Overall, it was one of the best dining experiences I've had and hope to be back soon!
My friends graciously took me here for a birthday
My friends graciously took me here for a birthday celebration mainly because I wanted to try the wagyu sando. I loveee wagyu so I can be a bit bias here but I think it was great, but pricy. The uni was fresh and sweet, karage was crunchy and perfectly seasoned. The oysters were just alright and sashimi was decent. I would come back for the uni, the ambience was nice and chill.
Unbeatable cuisine but the service needs improving
Since 2013, each time I am in NY, my trip starts and finishes with a meal at Sakamai. And 10 years down the road, the food is still outstanding. Amazing experience. What has changed is the service quality. Focus on the guys at the Bar. No smile, no connection, no nothing. This Sunday, I felt pure arrogance and lack of consideration for clients (the cocktails though are still excellent). One of the issues globally: Happy Hour. If you do not want to serve it, do not promote it. But avoid treating clients like 2 class populations. Ridicule must be exposed. We had planned for a full dinner (we finally spent 350$). Got a table in the restaurant. Started by ordering oysters. Happy Hour Oysters as promoted at the entrance. We were told these could not be served in the restaurant but that we had to go back to the bar. But what about the rest of our dinner? Egg-on-Egg-on-Egg... Sashimi... "Well then you can come back to your table!". So we switched the table for the bar and ordered oysters and a cocktail. Question asked by the bar tender "Which oysters, the Happy Hour or those from the menu?". Is there a difference between them? No. Just the price! Come on. Don't play with your customers. And that is the way we were treated for the rest of the time at the bar. "Could we now order the rest of our dinner?". "Yes, and you can go back to your table." And so we moved glasses & Co back to the table for the rest of our evening. Ridiculous. Exposing your clients by making them migrate through your restaurant and then treat them as beggars. The food was still outstanding, so we will go back. One more time. If the service quality remains low, it will have been the last time. What a waste.
4.5/5! I really enjoyed my experience at SakaMai. We came
4.5/5! I really enjoyed my experience at SakaMai. We came at 6:30 right before their happy hour ended at 7 and so glad we did! The oysters were half off ($2/oyster), and they were so good!! I definitely could've eaten dozens of those. Sadly their happy hour is only available by the bar, not at a regular table. For the food we had the toro hand roll, wagyu hand roll, grilled broccolini, and uni mazemen. Everything was good. As someone who loves uni, I loved the uni mazemen. Hand rolls were good as well. Give it a try!

Came here with a group of 5 on a Friday (we made a same-day reservation). While the restaurant space is small, it seems that the restaurant was not super busy last Friday so we probably could have made do without a reservation. They also had a happy hour deal but we found out it only applies if you sit at the bar. Here are the dishes we ordered: Sashimi platter - 5.5/10 - fish quality was fine but nothing special, probably wouldn't order again Cha soba - 8.5/10 - so light and refreshing, paired really well with the other richer dishes Duck - 10/10 - AMAZING tender and rich flavor, one of my friends called it the "best duck I've ever had in my life" - please please order here! Miso cod - 10/10 - also amazing, also buttery and rich flavor and the rice was on the firmer side but added a great texture Karaage - 7/10 - sauce was really good, otherwise standard karaage (still good though) Crispy octopus - 7/10 - was indeed crispy but otherwise okay, I feel like it could've been more tender Overall, our favorites were definitely the duck, the miso cod, and the cha soba. The service was also great, really informative and helpful when we were ordering. I'm definitely curious about the other dishes on the menu now, would come back to try these now that I know finding a table here is very do-able.
THIS HAS QUICKLY BECOME MY FAVE NYC RESTAURANTS! Everything
THIS HAS QUICKLY BECOME MY FAVE NYC RESTAURANTS! Everything we ordered was so good. This is also one of the few restaurants that can pull off great food AND great drinks. Let's start with the drinks- their age smoked #2 with rye whiskey, scotch whisky, Japanese sake with cacao and sweet vermouth is out of this world. It's my fave smoked whiskey, the flavors are so intricate with a hint of sweetness and goes down so smoothly. They also smoke it in front of you, so if you love a good show, you will love this. My FAVE FAVE dish is the egg on egg on egg it's literal mouthgasm. I was so shook. My second fave dish is the toro sashimi, super fatty and melts in your mouth. They are also known for the uni mazemen, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and the uni / bone marrow taste was spot on. The grilled broccolini with the runny egg was also super good! Ambiance: cute date spot Service: great service Genuinely impressed by this spot, and would give this place a 10/10!

TRY IT *Endive Salad-Finely shaved cheese on top of crisp bitter endives. *Black Cod- Served with a side of black wild rice. *Crispy Octopus-Small portion but perfectly cooked and a side of aioli. *Soba Salad-My favorite dish of the evening. *Sashimi- Every single piece was very fresh. *Yogurt Mousse- The berry fruit compote in this dessert makes it special. SKIP IT *Wagyu Katsu Sandwich-Very decadent but slightly too greasy for me. FYI *Full bar (sake and mocktails available) *Metered street parking starts 7pm. *Great for date night and large parties. Service was friendly and spot on. I appreciate it when servers take their time to explain each dish and the staff took extra care in making sure my pregnant friend was comfortable. Can't wait to come back to try out the rest of their menu!
