Unbeatable cuisine but the service needs improving
Since 2013, each time I am in NY, my trip starts and finishes with a meal at Sakamai. And 10 years down the road, the food is still outstanding. Amazing experience. What has changed is the service quality. Focus on the guys at the Bar. No smile, no connection, no nothing. This Sunday, I felt pure arrogance and lack of consideration for clients (the cocktails though are still excellent). One of the issues globally: Happy Hour. If you do not want to serve it, do not promote it. But avoid treating clients like 2 class populations. Ridicule must be exposed. We had planned for a full dinner (we finally spent 350$). Got a table in the restaurant. Started by ordering oysters. Happy Hour Oysters as promoted at the entrance. We were told these could not be served in the restaurant but that we had to go back to the bar. But what about the rest of our dinner? Egg-on-Egg-on-Egg... Sashimi... "Well then you can come back to your table!". So we switched the table for the bar and ordered oysters and a cocktail. Question asked by the bar tender "Which oysters, the Happy Hour or those from the menu?". Is there a difference between them? No. Just the price! Come on. Don't play with your customers. And that is the way we were treated for the rest of the time at the bar. "Could we now order the rest of our dinner?". "Yes, and you can go back to your table." And so we moved glasses & Co back to the table for the rest of our evening. Ridiculous. Exposing your clients by making them migrate through your restaurant and then treat them as beggars. The food was still outstanding, so we will go back. One more time. If the service quality remains low, it will have been the last time. What a waste.
Be the first to ReplyElevated Japanese cuisine
I made reservations for this place way in advance and I was so happy I did. This is now one of my go to restaurants when Im in the city and I highly recommend it to all of my friends and family. My friend and I shared the beef tartar, A5 wagyu sando and the uni pasta with bone marrow. Fair warning if you love meat this is the spot. Cholesterol over load if you order what I did. The sando was well worth the $85. I found myself salivating and pausing after each bite. The textures and buttery taste of the meat was heaven. The uni pasta has an average amount and the combination of the marrow with the pasta was delicious. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here. Service was great and the food was so memorable. Honestly, if they don't have the sando its best to just wait. Its that good! If you're in the area and want some elevated Japanese food this is the spot. Can't wait to come back and try some of their other classic dishes.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible A5 Wagyu beef experience!
My son and I wanted to try the famed AF Wagyu beef, and SakaMai was a great spot to enjoy it. The service was attentive and informative. We had the Miyazaki Wagyu Beef Steak, which is buttery beyond belief, but with no butter. It's simply that extraordinarily marbled and tender beef, and it lives up to the hype. We also had the Filet Mignon, to compare, which was also great. We also enjoyed the Bluefin Tuna Hand Roll and the Charred Broccolini with parmesan crisp. So worth it!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best Japanese fusion food you ever try
since two months ago, it became our best restaurant in the city if we crave for Japanese food. The dishes are very creative, the service is impeccable , the drinks ( oh! this famous " Once upon a time in the East"!!) are really cool
Greatly recommended
Complex Flavors Galore! A Big Win for Japanese Food in NYC
Where do I begin with Sakamai...the unassuming place in LES really packs a punch not only with its competitors in NYC but around the country. From all the places I have tried sashimi and other Japanese delicacies (both in the US and in Japan), the quality served at Sakamai is incredible. Though the prices are steep, the complex flavors throughout their dishes makes this restaurant stand out against the crowd.
My Boyfriend and I started with the Wagyu Uni Handroll: the uni was sweet and the raw wagyu melted in the mouth (a perfect appetizer). We then had the grilled saba which was good too, but in comparison to the other appetizer, paled a bit in comparison. The Kakuni Sliders were so moist with the caramelized pork belly and pickled vegetables. We then ate the Miso Glazed Cod Donburi. This dish is definitely worth getting; I've never had anything quite like it at other restaurants. The combination of flavors and ingredients here go beyond the typical Japanese restaurant and it's impossible to forgot how delicious this dish really is.
Lastly, the long awaited A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Katsu Sando. It is really expensive, but trust me...GET IT. Those 12 little bit sized pieces taste like pure heaven. If only we could afford to get it all the time! Sake selection is amazing as well so don't forget to try something too. Sakamai gets it right in all the places, great service, comfortable intimate space and delicious dishes. Can't wait to come back!
Excellent relaxed izakaya on the LES!
Delicious!! Relaxed, cozy izakaya with great cocktails and small plates, great for sharing. I saw a few reviews saying it's really expensive... however it turned out to be well worth it (and actually good value for the quality/experience). The dishes that stood out were: Wagyu Sando, Grilled Octopus, Kara-age, Truffle Toro. Good cocktails too: Chrysanthemum Sour, Whiskey Sour... and something with Calpico.
Service is super friendly and helpful. This would work well for a small-ish group or a date night.
very taste, but not cheap
We were a group of 5, and we had several small dishes. I can say that everything was pretty good, and some dishes (e.g. the octopus) excellent. Service was also very pleasant, and the atmosphere was good.
Now, it is on the expensive side of things, and certainly not on the 30-50 range indicated here. We paid 77 per head (before tip), and it is not that we ate a lot or the most expensive dishes or fancy drinks. Is it worthwhile? I would say yes, but be prepared to spend.
Great Food & Sake Selection
Had a reservation for a Saturday night and although the restaurant was busy, we were seated immediately, which was appreciated. We were in a back, private room, and the service was still pretty good. We felt we were attended to fairly, but when we were ready for the check, no one came around for quite a while (since a couple of other tables in our room had been emptied). The food was excellent, extremely flavorful, well cooked, and presented in a deliberate caring way. My partner and I are not familiar with the many varieties of Sake on the menu and what dishes they'd pair best to, so the waiter was extremely kind and knowledgable and helped us pick a fantastic Sake that was flowery and fragrant, that we absolutely loved. The atmosphere was dim lit rooms with some minimalistic Japanese style wallpaper designs and decorations, a nice environment for couples dining.
The only drawback I have on SakaMai is the prices. Everything is expensive for the amount of food you receive. Neither my partner and I came into dinner being necessarily hungry (which was a blessing) as we only ordered a few small plates off the menu keeping the total cost reasonable. I imagine if I do go back, I would like to try the Tasting Menu as it seems to be a more comprehensive assortment of foods that would leave me full and satisfied without feeling gouged on prices.
Sake nerds !
Actually my first visit to a real Japanese restaurant. Very good service and food. The sake tasting was excellent. I‘ll be back!

Organized a girls night with a friend from out of town—it’s a decent sized venue but feels cozy (dim lighting, candles etc.)
There is a tasting menu for $125/head but we opted for a la carte (Which before tip ended up being $115/head—but some of the others left a little hungry still, so choose wisely) so it is a reasonably priced tasting menu.
Charred Broccolini: absolutely delicious, not too oily, good flavour, and the Parmesan balances out the flavour. Good amount for two people. (Four was a stretch)
Kara-age Fried Chicken: super crispy chicken, great flavour independent of the sauce—but don’t skip the sauce because it is phenomenal and makes the dish worth while. (I would’ve drank the sauce to not waste it if I wasn’t in public...)
Miyazaki wagyu katsu sando: so this was the hype dish that brought us here—and while it was beautiful and tender (you honestly didn’t need teeth to eat it) I kind of felt the price didn’t match the overall taste. But don’t get me wrong—it was delicious—I just needed it to blow my mind. It was a stunning piece of meat cooked perfectly. But that’s what you’re getting. No frills.
Grilled octopus: cooked to perfection without even the slightest of chewiness—executed brilliantly. Would order again
Bluefin handroll: while I didn’t eat this myself, I was told that it was amazing and she actually ordered a second one. She gobbled it right up and complained it was so good she couldn’t eat it faster, haha. Has a very slight kick to it—she said it was 8% spicy and 3% salty. But when the next one came out I stole a smidge of the tuna and I agree—it had awesome flavour.
Kani Monaka: basically tastes like tuna salad on wafer like bread. It was the fanciest tuna-salad Like thing I’ve ever had, but def wouldn’t pay $12 again. It was kinda like a savoury macaron (In appearance) and wasn’t much bigger either.
Wagyu Curry: absolutely delicious! I actually scrapped the bowl shamelessly. Amassing flavour, good size. Would definitely order again.
Uni Mazeman: this was probably my favourite dish—but I’m obsessed with ramen so I’m a little biased. However the flavour was amazing and the portion size was quite large. The noodles with perfectly cooked with and amazing saucing on them—and a huge lump of uni plopped on top. The bone marrow was also heavenly. This was one of my top choices.
Hope that was helpful! I would definitely come back. As I was leaving I noticed we were the only Caucasian people in the restaurant which meant we chose very well. Would recommend a booking for sure!
