Ognisko Restaurant London Reviews from The Last Year
Average with elements of poor
I went to Ogmisko for family lunch on Sunday. It was the day of Orthodox Easter and we were looking forward to a festive meal. It was disappointing. Although food was OK, service lacked in many ways. I was left with a feeling that it had the attitude. It is not a crime to skip starter for desert. Dishes lacked attention to detail. I have never had traditional Honey cake served with a spoon of sour cream from the tub even if the cream is sour cream based in the cake. Cake was dry. We won’t be back.
Refined Polish food in a smart setting
I went with colleagues for a celebratory dinner. The eight of us had a set menu (£45 per head). We were seated outside on the terrace on a nice summer night. The food was traditional — cold beetroot soup, marinated herring, dumplings etc. All were delicious and well cooked, especially the lamb dish. Service was friendly and efficient. Overall a very nice evening in South Kensington.
Dissatisfied
Ognisco is one of our favourite restaurants the decor lends to a great ambiance. The staff are superb and very attentive and helpful.I did feel on this occasion they had crammed to many tables in of course profit must be made but not to the discomfort of customers.I ordered The Chicken Kiev which was tough dry and barely any filling. The mashed potatoesI ordered were also luke warm and also very dry.Plus could they set a standard of dress we had made the effort because of the restaurant.
A good night out.
Positive: venue, decor, ambience, staff. Decent: menu options, authentic feel. To work on: slightly lacking in subtlety. I’m not an expert on Polish food so maybe I’m being unfair. The food was very interesting but lacked the care of Medlar where we ate next day.
Great spot to eat if in Sounth Kensington
A place of historical significance as this was the haunt of the Polish govt in exile. General Anders even had his own table (i.e. the plaque). Food portions well cooked and reasonably priced. The restaurant maintains elegance and charm. The bar has abundance of polish spirits and is dominated by the portratits of Generals Anders, Sosnkowski, Bor-Komorowski and Sikorski. You can imagine the conversations had over dinner on how to overthrow the occupying Nazis/communists occupying Poland over some vodka and kielbasa.
Great find!
Super cute (and also elegant) place in the heart of Kensington. Friendly and very helpful staff, very good dishes (obviously the pierogi are recommended) and the bill is not sky-high despite the area. A great place to try Polish cuisine.
chikhirtma
Hi Ognisko, is it possible to get your recipe for chikhirtma? it definitely does not like traditional ones and with a slight curry flavour, absolutely love it.
Very unwelcoming.
Food was nice, and the lady serving us was lovely. However, we were majorly let down when a glass of red wine was spilt. Another diner (friend of a regular) complained she had a splash on her skirt (fair enough) but the glass was spilt all over myself and nothing was done to help me (a new customer). They cleared the glass but offered nothing to help clear the stains. Very much felt like you had to go regularly to feel welcome…plus no room for human error!
Great atmosphere and excellent food
Lovely atmosphere, great staff and delicious food. Loved everything it’s not just Polish food but elevated to next level and especially enjoyed the cocktails. Sat outside in heated area with fairly lights such a lovely and relax atmosphere
Fabulous pre show dinner
We came for an early dinner and cocktails before heading to the Royal Albert Hall. The bar was full at 5:30pm and the restaurant looked beautiful in candlelight. It’s a very smart looking place but it’s very relaxed at the same time. We had spiced beetroot martinis which were such a hit. We shared some Polish ‘gnocchi’ with mushrooms to start and we both had pork schnitzel for our mains & cheesecake for pudding. The food was absolutely delicious, we kept looking at each other nodding our heads. We will definitely be back if we are in the area.
Disappointing experience
Went to Ognisko for Sunday lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday with our family. This is a place that we have been to many times before and know well. Sadly on this occasion we were disappointed. The restaurant was overcrowded (too many tables), extremely noisy, the waiters were too busy to give proper attention to the tables, there were dogs present which we strongly object to for hygiene reasons and because they barked, the food was mediocre and the price, for the quality, was exorbitant.
I loved it.
Yeah, it's a Polish place. I won't claim to know much beyond kielbasa and pierogis but please please please don't let that hold you back if you're in a similar boat trying to find something that's not a chain place near the museum district. First, the room is beautiful. A classic South Kensington white interior and outdoor garden area, just as nice heated in winter. A building with a lot of history and importance to the Polish community in London so real gravitas to the place. Somewhat odd paintings and memorabilia on some walls. Fine. Service was overall attentive if a bit... typically Eastern European. No issue with that. But the food was spectacular. Seriously. The best kielbasa (or any sausage) I've ever had. The best potato salad I've ever had. The best pierogi I've ever had. A fantastic placki...crispy shredded potato...with shredded black pudding over it. Do not think stodgy black pudding like your fry up. This was light and pure class. Finally the drinks. Poland is the #2 consumer of vodka in the world. Great price and quality for a range of Polish tipples here. I had two martinis that had me singing Christmas carols at Royal Albert Hall like Nigel Garage singing God Save the Queen. Trust me. Go.
