🤢 2/5 - Beautiful Facade - Disappointing Elsewhere

We had heard many good things about Judges in the distant past, but never had the opportunity to visit there. Working overseas for the past 20 years made it even more difficult to visit, but during the Christmas period of 2022, my partner and I decided to travel home to see my family who live in the Teesside area and we chose Judges as our base. We were excited as we drove up the long driveway, to be greeted by a large impressive building at the end of the driveway. Unfortunately, this is where the positivity ended. The check-in was rushed and impersonal, we were not show to our room, nor were we offered any information on the key timings for breakfast, or the timings for the bar. We were simply asked our name and a key was thrust at us with a simple 'here's your key', that was it. The check-in process is more refined at a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge, but this is supposed to be a quality hotel, which the rates reflect. Odd considering it seemed we were the only guests at the hotel. Maybe there were other guests, but we didn't encounter any during our stay. After a long flight we were eager for a hot shower... alas there was no hot water, so we made do with a lukewarm shower. The next day, we went for a jog in the local area and returned sweaty and muddy. Sadly, the hot water situation had still not been resolved, so we made do with another lukewarm shower. On day 3, still no hot water and when we complained to the reception we were told that they were aware of the problem and had been trying to fix it for a few days. Unfortunately, way too late for us as we were checking out that day. The rooms are tired, draughty and are in need of refurbishment. The lovely old sash windows look amazing, but are super-draughty and rattle loudly in the wind. In fact so loud that I had to get up in the middle of the night and wedge a piece of folded cardboard in the gap between the two windows, to stop them from rattling together. The bar area was deserted and there was no member of staff on duty there to attend to us when we returned to the hotel each evening. Instead, the receptionist had to double as barman and muddle her way around the bar to serve us a drink, before returning to her desk. On check-out day we packed our cases and made our way down to reception, it was annoying and frustrating to struggle down the long staircase carrying 2 heavy suitcases with 2 members of staff just watching me. It took much composure not to say something derogatory to them, but I held my words. Time to settle the bill and I sat down in the chair of the check-in desk. The female manager stood over me, (very unprofessional) as she explained she was aware of an issue with the hot water during our stay and offered to remove GBP 40 from our bar bill. Unfortunately for us, the hotel had taken full payment for the room in advance, otherwise there was no way we would have agreed to pay the full price for the room. The GBP 40 reduction in the bar bill was a joke and my only regret is that I didn't challenge the manager at the time. One evening while in the bar, we were informed by a member of staff that the hotel was being sold to a private investor and that this mystery investor has plans for the place. I sincerely hope that these plans include training the staff and replacing the management, as well as the obvious structural issues that need to be resolved. We would not return to this hotel or recommend it to anyone, until the building and the staff receive a serious makeover. Very disappointing.
