Greed
Booked in good faith for Mothers day, wanted £100 upfront but only paid £40 Then we find out its shutting on 3rd March as someone is buying it. They didn't inform us as we found out word of mouth when ringing all they could say was how do you know you? You cant have a refund until sale goes through. How dare they take money off honest hard working people knowing they were shutting. We only lost a small amount those poor people who had wedding etc planned. Just sheer greed, appalling. There should be a law against it
Be the first to ReplyOur wedding
We recently had our wedding here in January, and from booking it in 2020 right up until the day I can't complain with the amount of help we have had from Suzanne, and if she wasn't in to reply to my emails then Jackie would make sure to. Nothing was ever too much bother for them even with the amount of changes we had to make in the few weeks before the big day. The day went as smoothly as we could have wanted and it was perfect from start to finish, the food was beautiful and the staff were also amazing all day. I'm so glad we made the choice to have our wedding here, and if anyone else is considering them then please do! And I won't hesitate to recommend to anyone looking. From us both, thank you to Suzanne, Jackie, Paul, and all the staff for the most incredible day. Mr & Mrs Brimble X
Be the first to ReplyPerfect start to 2023
We visited the restaurant on New Years Day for a meal with our young son and parents. It was a set menu with a lovely variety of choices which meant we all struggled to choose; definitely a huge positive. The waiting staff were quick in letting the guest with coeliac know what choices she had or how they could alter meals to make them safe for her. This was hugely appreciated as usually she can be left with only one menu choice but that was certainly not the case here. We all had 3 courses (of course). The food was outstanding, perfectly presented and absolutely delicious. Our top compliments to the chef. We will 100% be back; I can see it becoming a regular for meals out as a couple and as a family. All of the staff that we encountered were a credit to the hotel too and the grounds are absolutely beautiful!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing Christmas lunch. Will not recommend to friends any more
We went for a special Christmas lunch the week before Christmas- we eat there three or four times per year and enjoy the ambience etc. On arrival we were seated in the lounge which usually has a welcoming fire especially in winter. No fire! No bread buns before 1st course. My luke warm soup arrived without bread bun…When I asked for one I was told only on Sundays but he would ask the chef for me. One arrived obviously defrosted and microwaved! Had soup reheated! The seabass on special menu’off’ and was replaced with cod. It arrived practically raw and so salty it was inedible. I was given opportunity to choose another meal which I did but of course it arrived after my friends had finished their meal by which time I’d lost interest in everything. The coffee and truffles were delicious but the whole experience was SO disappointing. I did mention it to management to prevent it happening to others. They reluctantly deleted £10 from the bill but really couldn’t have cared less. I believe management and chef have changed since we were there last in October. Hopefully standards will improve in 2023.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Facade - Disappointing Elsewhere
We had heard many good things about Judges in the distant past, but never had the opportunity to visit there. Working overseas for the past 20 years made it even more difficult to visit, but during the Christmas period of 2022, my partner and I decided to travel home to see my family who live in the Teesside area and we chose Judges as our base. We were excited as we drove up the long driveway, to be greeted by a large impressive building at the end of the driveway. Unfortunately, this is where the positivity ended. The check-in was rushed and impersonal, we were not show to our room, nor were we offered any information on the key timings for breakfast, or the timings for the bar. We were simply asked our name and a key was thrust at us with a simple 'here's your key', that was it. The check-in process is more refined at a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge, but this is supposed to be a quality hotel, which the rates reflect. Odd considering it seemed we were the only guests at the hotel. Maybe there were other guests, but we didn't encounter any during our stay. After a long flight we were eager for a hot shower... alas there was no hot water, so we made do with a lukewarm shower. The next day, we went for a jog in the local area and returned sweaty and muddy. Sadly, the hot water situation had still not been resolved, so we made do with another lukewarm shower. On day 3, still no hot water and when we complained to the reception we were told that they were aware of the problem and had been trying to fix it for a few days. Unfortunately, way too late for us as we were checking out that day. The rooms are tired, draughty and are in need of refurbishment. The lovely old sash windows look amazing, but are super-draughty and rattle loudly in the wind. In fact so loud that I had to get up in the middle of the night and wedge a piece of folded cardboard in the gap between the two windows, to stop them from rattling together. The bar area was deserted and there was no member of staff on duty there to attend to us when we returned to the hotel each evening. Instead, the receptionist had to double as barman and muddle her way around the bar to serve us a drink, before returning to her desk. On check-out day we packed our cases and made our way down to reception, it was annoying and frustrating to struggle down the long staircase carrying 2 heavy suitcases with 2 members of staff just watching me. It took much composure not to say something derogatory to them, but I held my words. Time to settle the bill and I sat down in the chair of the check-in desk. The female manager stood over me, (very unprofessional) as she explained she was aware of an issue with the hot water during our stay and offered to remove GBP 40 from our bar bill. Unfortunately for us, the hotel had taken full payment for the room in advance, otherwise there was no way we would have agreed to pay the full price for the room. The GBP 40 reduction in the bar bill was a joke and my only regret is that I didn't challenge the manager at the time. One evening while in the bar, we were informed by a member of staff that the hotel was being sold to a private investor and that this mystery investor has plans for the place. I sincerely hope that these plans include training the staff and replacing the management, as well as the obvious structural issues that need to be resolved. We would not return to this hotel or recommend it to anyone, until the building and the staff receive a serious makeover. Very disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyOur wedding 12th November
We had our wedding day here 12th November and it was the most magical day. Suzanne was absolutely amazing from start to finish when we started planning our wedding in 2020- nothing was too much hassle for her. We stayed over the night before and had a family meal in the restaurant, the food was outstanding. The lady who looked after us was amazing, kind and very funny. She was also there on the wedding day( can't remember your name sorry). Our wedding day was perfect, well organised and all of the staff were fabulous. We can't thank you all enough for making our special day everything we've ever dreamed of and more. All our love, Mr and Mrs Quittenton x
Be the first to ReplyWhat a magical day!
To the team at Judges we just want to review to say thank you so much for such a magical day on the 23rd September. The whole of the team should be so proud of the atmosphere and general team spirit we both saw throughout our stay and wedding. We enjoyed every second. Suzanne was the perfect wedding planner, keeping me organised but never demanding. Researching my requests and nothing ever seemed too much hassle. We visited the venue a number of times before the big day to introduce it to family and friends and was always welcomed so warmly and the staff knew I had a wedding booked even when I hadn't mentioned this on the reservation. Paul, who managed my day, went above and beyond to save the cake from toppling!! The lady who then took over into the evening, I am so sorry I didn’t catch her name, was also just as efficient and it was great to see them enjoying themselves while working. A real credit. All the waitresses seemed so genuinely interested in our day and the compliments about how the room was dressed brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't quite believe it was my wedding that people were complimenting so much. The garden room in the main house though small is picture perfect! Our families had such an amazing time and the photograph taken, printed and framed for when we sat down for our reception, was such a gorgeous touch!! It’s already up on the mantle piece. The grounds were just perfect for pictures and getting the weather for an outside ceremony was the cherry on the top. Thank you
Be the first to ReplyAfternoon tea
Went for afternoon tea with a friend for a special occasion. Lovely setting, room was well spaced and bright. Selection of sandwiches and cakes were superb and the tea was kept hot with a tea cosy which made the 2 and a half hours we were there fly by! Amazing taste and quality of food, freshly prepared and good value for what you get. Staff were all very attentive while not coming across as overbearing, everything from the welcome to the leaving the staff were polite and absolutely lovely.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful afternoon tea!
From start to finish, my celebration afternoon tea was truly excellent & superseded my expectations. From booking (to ensure the table was accessible for one of my guests) to the actual afternoon tea, we were made to felt so special and very welcome. The sandwiches and cakes were delicious, the tea was served hot thanks to the extra special tea cosies & the service was excellent. We could not have asked for anything more. I need to give an extra shout out to Barbara who messaged me a few times to ensure that my booking met my needs and also to YCheng whose warm welcome, attentiveness and charm made our afternoon tea extra special! They are assets to your team! Thank you once again & we hope to return soon.
Be the first to ReplyRoom 12A
The service and welcome at the hotel can not be faulted but the noise from the chiller’s near room 12A don’t make it a good night sleep. Also the bed was uncomfortable so that along with the noise not a good combination.
Be the first to ReplyJust been married at this amazing hotel
I can't fault this hotel in any way. The events organisers, Sue and Jo, were fantastic, totally helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. On the day all the staff were very attentive and professional. As a wedding venue I would recommend it to anyone. The grounds are lovely and the old fashioned setting, if that's what you like, is just perfect.
Be the first to ReplyWedding Reception
The whole event was unforgettable, the Wedding Coordinator was unfailingly helpful and attentive, the food was sumptuous and we were entertained by The Chris White Jazz Trio who created a happy atmosphere without anyone having to raise their voice

We would just like to say how fantastic we found Judges Hotel. Absolute 5 star rating we got married here last weekend everything was all we could of wished for and more. The staff right from the very beginning helped with everything nothing was too much trouble Suzanne was just brilliant we can’t thank or praise you enough. The overnight stay the night before the wedding was fabulous again nothing too much trouble the actual day of the wedding was out of this world everything was just perfect right down to the last detail Sam looked after us on the day and what a job he did everyone commented on how fantastic he was with attention to every detail. All our guests throughly enjoyed the day quoted ‘the best wedding ever’ we honestly couldn’t be happier and could not recommend Judges Hotel enough.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious meal in a fabulous setting
Im gutted we’ve not found this restaurant before now!! A fabulous evening out with friends! The setting was perfect - drinks and canapés on the terrace, followed by a delicious 3 course meal in the conservatory dining room. A salmon roulade to start, followed by a perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious asparagus risotto and finished off with the most amazing raspberry sorbet! My husband had the belly pork which he said was delicious!! Tea coffee and homemade petit fours in the lounge finished off a great meal. The gentleman who served our drinks and meal was polite, friendly and professional.
Be the first to ReplyTimeless Elegance
We stayed for two nights at the end of June, we had a great relaxing time. The food is excellent, well cooked, plenty of choice. The staff are lovely, nothing is too much for them. If you want a taste of olde worlde elegance in beautiful peaceful surroundings and great food then this hotel is a must. Thank you so much to all the staff. We’ll definitely comeback.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing time.
We were given a warm welcome on arrival, shown to our room (18) by the lovely Fiona, she was very professional, yet so warm and friendly, she really enhanced our stay at Judges. Our room was lovely, so comfy and spacious, with everything we needed, including sherry and fruit. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the hotel were so kind marking the occasion with a lovely card and fizz very much appreciated gifts, thank you. The food was lovely and the friendly staff couldn't do enough to help, Lisa made our breakfasts a treat. I must mention the hotel and grounds which are fab, love the woodland walk! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay cant wait to come back! Thank you Judges!
Be the first to ReplyWe can understand why the Judges Country House has won so many awards
Driving up the tree lined driveway was a precursor to a great experience. Charming attentive staff, a lovely spacious room, top quality food, all at a reasonable price. Not to forget the ample gardens, where a stroll through the woodland is a delight. It was clear, during our stay, that several of the guests had stayed many times before. We will return.
Be the first to ReplySo well looked after - entertainers
We were booked to sing at a day time event and we’ve had the most wonderful time. We’ve been so well looked after and even had afternoon tea ourselves! The communication has been excellent throughout and we’re hoping to be back again! We’ve had everything we need and all the staff have been so friendly and helpful. We’ve been so lucky to perform here.
Be the first to ReplyRELAXING STAY
We were invited here for a night's stay following a golden wedding anniversary meal. Clean room, comfortable bed and delicious breakfast. Throughout the stay, staff were there when needed and pleased to serve; unobtrusive otherwise. Enjoyed the cycle ride round the grounds before Sunday lunch and departure.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, missing service
Visited for dinner, not staying. Table booked for 6pm, arrived at 5:30. Had coffee in the lounge. The quality of the food was good but the service was largely missing, inattentive or poorly skilled. After more than 30 minutes between each course we left before desert as it was heading to 40 minutes to even place an order with no service staff to be seen. We had to go to reception to find someone and to pay and leave. No apology, just excuses about it being a busy day and that they didn’t know where the staff were. Management you need to train and support your service staff better, this is not the fault of the service staff. When you are paying £50 a head with an automatic £11 discretionary service charge, your guests expect better service. Really felt for the kitchen who did a great job. This was my third visit, sadly the last for a while.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Weekend
We’ve spent last weekend at Judges,a great place to charge and relax, lovely room with character as you will expect from a country house hotel, great lounge and terrace and a cosy restaurant, food and service are a bonus, all great and friendly team. Really enjoyed
Be the first to ReplyDate Night Package
I don’t leave far from Judges but we’ve decided to take the date night package with overnight stay, everything was so relaxing, amazing room and nice view, pre-dinner champagne cocktails with canapés served in the cosy lounge, barman really friendly and chatty, lovely 3 courses meal in the conservatory, very pleasant restaurant team, all in all a great deal.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing stay, Poor service.
Well the night away my wife and I had, booking through Secret Escapes was not what we expected having done several of these and usually good, this had to be the poorest.
After pulling on to the long driveway and in to the car park there in front of us stood a lovely grand house and our first thoughts were “very nice” but Oh No!!
After checking in, we booked in for dinner at 7.00pm to be told that we were on the “date night “ menu which was pre dinner champagne (Prosecco) and canopies, followed by 3 course meal then coffees and Petit four, very nice it sounds.
We were shown to our room (21) which was supposedly was a Deluxe room but the only thing deluxe was probably the refurbished bathroom with a TV over the bath, pointless, the room was dated and the wallpaper carried dust webs, splashes of drinks and even showing signs of damp ingress.
We went down to the bar area half an hour before our dinner ordered and served our drinks then were quickly ushered out of the area into a large chilled lounge as another family were hogging the open fire, as they said there was a private party starting at 7.00PM of which was not explained to us.
There was another family in as well that came in after us and they were served and shown the menu. we had no menu’s.
We were asked by the young lad “are you ready to order” my reply was “we have no menus and no Pre dinner drinks and canopies of which the lad was a little flustered.
After we had finished our drinks and ordered our food we were shown into the restaurant which was in the conservatory part rather than the restaurant.
During our meals we were asked if everything was ok, Starters ok, main meal NO, lamb overcooked needing a saw to cut it and the red wine jus was like a thick bisto type gravy. I will mention it to the chef the young man said,Followed by ok sweets.
After finishing our sweets about 20 minutes passed by and we still hadn’t been asked for our coffee order and in the end just left the restaurant in disgust.
My wife said should we say something to reception so we did and she wrote it all down on a piece of scrap paper and were told she would make sure it is dealt with and apologised.
Next morning (check out day thank god) we went down for breakfast at 9.15 into the restaurant to be greeted by nobody, tables were set but no one there, yet again another private party going on in another room.
We asked at reception where and how breakfast was served and shown again into the shabby style conservatory and said we can sit where ever we want so we did, a few minutes later a waiter came and took our order for breakfast. On arrival of Tea Coffee and toast he popped them down and said that the table wasn’t set for breakfast it was set for dinner of which we both shook our heads.
On check out another receptionist asked us if everything was ok with our stay, in shock we answered NO, we explained everything again that we had already explained to the check in receptionist,
She put notes on paper again and apologised and she will report our complaint to the General Manager and we would receive a phone call from him on Monday at the latest, over 2 weeks later now and i am still awaiting his call.
Summary of the stay
Needs a lot of maintenance work and redecoration in place.
Better management skills and staff training procedures
We both feel as though it was money wasted!
Kitchen requires better chefs rather than cooks
