Fishbones Chelmsford Reviews from The Last Year
No Bones in this Fish!
I have not written a review in a while but here goes. I had been to this same restaurant, Fishbones, a few years back and was totally unimpressed. The ambiance, acoustics, food, and service were sub-par. As a result, I was hesitant to return. The No Reservation but Call List practice was an early warning sign that things would not go well. Boy, was I wrong! We (a party of 6 to celebrate a birthday) were seated immediately, All staff members including the greeters and seating people were smiling, friendly and gracious. But let's face it - you want to know about the food. I had a delicious lobster roll crammed with fresh lobster meat. Prior to that my spouse and I shared the Calamari and others had Onion Rings as appetizers - all delicious. Nothing overbreaded or overcooked. Just right. Perfect. We also had side Cesar dinner salads which looked just okay - but really delicious. So much so that when I return I may well order the full sized version. From the hearty portions of the FIsh & Chips, to my Lobster Roll to the variety of Scallop dishes ordered everything was perfect. The waitress was a real pro. Around when you needed her and otherwise invisible. Always looking to be helpful but never intrusive or overbearing. We even had a visit from the chef at our table and he was beaming as we expressed our delight with his culinary efforts. He was understandably proud of his fine work. All in all an excellent experience. The ambiance was welcoming, comfortable and friendly, the acoustics fine, and the table spacing excellent. Will I be returning to FIshbones? In a heart-beat!
Wonderful seafood, great service at the bar
We enjoyed a great dinner on Feb 3. It was packed at 7 pm on a Saturday but we found two seats at the bar. Good thing because the wait was over an hour for a table. I see why: The food was outstanding. We started with Cuttyhunk oysters - fresh, briny, out of this world. I had the parmesan- crusted flounder and it was delicious. My husband got the blackened swordfish and it was cooked perfectly. Service from behind the bar was excellent - everything timed perfectly, even with the place so full. Well done. We’ll be back.
ALWAYS OUTSTANDING!
This has become our go to place for anything fish. The “reservation” and seating policies are somewhat annoying but, if one can overlook that, the quality of all of the dishes we’ve tried has been consistently top notch! Service has also been consistently good. Prices are fair given the quality and adequate portion size. There is a parking lot but, it can fill early on a weekend. There is also some street parking. Favorite dishes include (but are not limited to) the sesame (ahi style) tuna, the fish n chips, calamari app, spinach dip app, seafood casserole and fried fish platter.
Mixed Bag
Clam chowder was outstanding, as were the truffle fries. The Seafood Sauté was excellent, but was missing the advertised lobster meat component. Same thing for the Seafood Mediterranean - great dish, but no lobster meat. The grilled swordfish was excellent, although the side mashed potatoes were cold, lumpy and dry. The Lazy Man’s Lobster was also very good, but it was advertised as having meat from a 1.25 lb lobster. This should have translated to around 4 ounces of lobster meat. It had about half that amount. Four of our requested cocktails were unavailable. For $250 for a party of 4, none of the above “negative issues” should have happened.
Wonderful seafood
The quality of the seafood fare is excellent. We tried a whole bunch of dishes, and each one was fresh and flawless. The service, too, was friendly and attentive. A superb restaurant all round.
Excellent Food, VG Service, Res System NG
We’ve been here twice; lunch & dinner. Both times, the food was excellent and the service was very good. However, while they do not take reservations, they will take “call ahead” which, fro this place, is defined as calling the morning of for that evening… a reservation at most places. This created a big problem for us the first time that we tried to find there. Also, the second time, we arrived a few minutes before the other couple…our table was ready but they would not seat us until the other couple arrived. The bar was full. We would probably ordered one additional cocktail that evening had we been seated when we arrived. Made zero sense! Suggest they smooth out these rough edges while maintaining excellent food and VG service to achieve a 5 star rating.
Very poor eating accommodations for outdoor dining
My husband and I along with my son and his fiancé went to Fishbones on July 3rd for dinner. We have been several times before and have always had a wonderful dinner. This night, the food was no exception and as always, was very good. However, food aside, this particular time dining at Fishbones was less than stellar. We made a call ahead for 8:15 and were given the choice of sit inside or out. Because it was a nice evening, we chose to sit outside. It was still light out when we were seated. The service was slow, at times painfully slow. As the night progressed and the sun went down, we ended up eating in the dark. There was absolutely no outdoor lighting, not even a candle and when I asked if they had a candle, I was told they did not. We were literally eating in the dark, I couldn't even see my food. We had to put my phone on Flashlight mode and put a glass over it to provide some sort of lighting. To top it off, the mosquitoes came out. I had to go in and find our waiter to request our bill so that we could leave before we were eaten alive. If a restaurant is going to offer outdoor seating, proper lighting needs to be provided for when the sun goes down. To be eating in total darkness is absolutely absurd. Additionally, there should have been some sort of treatment for the mosquitoes or citronella candles, zappers or something but there was nothing. Needless to say, we will not be eating outside at Fishbones again and wouldn't recommend anyone to do so unless you know you will be done before it gets dark or you don't mind eating in the dark.
