tasty finger food, y'all!
I'd never had this type of food before, nor had my friends, so it was a learning experience for all of us. I had the house specialty, Fish Goulash, and ate it the way they do back home in their country: by tearing off bits of the sour bread roll and picking up portions of the stew. Delicious! The Beg Alicha, a lamb dish, was the favorite of Paul, while Cathy dined on the beef in Ye Tashe. She used a fork on hers, but Paul switch-hit between the fork and the bread. Sure hope I get to have this again!

We came for lunch on a Saturday. There was one outdoor table and many more inside (especially in the back). We ordered a Meat & Veggie Ultimate Combo, and it was the perfect amount of food for 2 very hungry people who did not eat breakfast. Some of my favorites were Siga Wot (lean beef in spices and a lot of butter), Misir Wot (spicy lentil in an orange color, my favorite no matter which Ethiopian restaurant), and the lamb dish. I was slightly disappointed by the flavor of Doro Wot.
Overall it was a good experience. I'd highly recommend the Ultimate Combo if it's your introduction to Ethiopian food, or you just want a variety of options
Decent food, inattentive service
Barcote is a homey restaurant with a lovely patio. And I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. We walked in to delicious smells and a mostly empty restaurant at 750pm on a Friday night. We waited for 10 minutes to be seated - no one (hostess, server, etc) even bothered to acknowledge us.
We chose to sit on the patio, where we proceeded to wait another 10-15 minutes for a server to come, bring us water, and take our order. We did not place a complicated order; I had the Barcote chicken tibs and hubby had the lamb wot. I ordered a Cabernet Sauvignon and he had a Diet Coke.
Another 10 minutes passed, and we got our drinks. 20 more minutes, and food came. The injera was tepid and lacked the sour flavor I hope for in injera. The chicken was seasoned beautifully and moist. The lamb was a little dry but the sauce had incredible flavor. So yeah, the food was good, in general.
But our drinks were never refilled. The server only came when we flagged her down. It took 10 minutes of sitting with empty plates before I caved and asked for the check. Put simply, the service was lacking and we felt ignored. With all the wonderful Ethiopian places in Oakland, we won't be returning here... no matter how tasty the lamb sauce was.
Nice addition to Ethiopian Restaurants
On Telegraph Ave., there are tons of Ethiopian Restaurants, but as of now, our loyalty lies with this one.
1. A clean and bright eating area as compared to others creating low local lighting.
2. Clean Restroom.
3. All Ethiopian fare - with a little extra kick of garlic.
4. Loved their Awaze - 2 types were served; the normal and another with Garlic.
5. We had their Vegetarian Combo and the Masser Wat was classic.
6. They gave their Coffee, right too.
7. Owner, Ms. Mulu is very friendly and walks around interacting with Patrons.
As it should be
After days of disappointment I finally came across this place. The intended Ethiopian referred to us by an Ethiopian was closed. This was down the road. It was unpretentious (as it should be) but warm and welcoming. Our host was so charming without the dumb obsequious that most restaurants think is good service. She didn't patronize me when she asked what strength of hot spice I required. I had the Kifto Dulet which was terrific. My dining companion had a mixed plate which was delish as well. We cleaned the plates. And I tell you the Ethiopian beer was SUPERB: St. George Amber. What a revelation. Unlike many Indian or Chinese or Japanese beers this was no bland largerish p***water. This astounded me. And things got even better. We ordered the baklava. Many a Greek/Turkish restaurant I have been to (indeed most) present at best a stale version. This really hit the mark. And the piece de resistance was ordering the coffee. The Ethiopian beans are roasted on the spot -- our host brought the smoking beans to our table just before the grind: a fabulous first for me. I have never had a mediocre Ethiopian meal and this place kept up the this roll. Bravo!

TIPS: Buy a groupon if it's available. The retaurant is small with only about 4 tables, so make a reservation to avoid a long wait.
Since I found a groupon for Barcote, we decided to try it out. The $44 groupon was for $75 dollars worth of food to be shared amongst 4 people dining in sharing 2 appetizers, 4 entrees, 2 desserts, and 4 teas. (There is a smaller denomination for 2 people.) We ordered the meat samosas and vegetarian samosas as appetizers. They were both piping hot and freshly fried, but the meat samosas were better. We tried the Ethiopian spiced tea, brewed with cinnamon and cloves. It smelled really good. I also tried the Enat honey wine; it was the sweeter one. The four entrees we got were one meat combo, Siga tibs, fish goulash, and veggie combo. Everything was good, but we especially liked the meat combo with the lamb and beef cubes. The injera (bread) was spongy and not too sour. We ordered two hot delicious baklavas as dessert. Service was good, as our host brought out more injera a couple of times during the meal.
