I hadn’t been to Zuma for years. My friend wished to try the restaurant. Since the Restaurant Week menu seemed good value for money, I took him there for dinner a couple of days ago. The menu included quite a lot of dishes. The style of the food hadn’t changed much since my last visit. It’s westernised Japanese food similar to that of Tokio Joe and Honjo for example. Of course, Zuma is a bit more upscale. Most of the dishes tended to be strong favoured and contained a lot of sauce. The quality of ingredients was good but far from exceptional. The food was reasonably good on the whole although no dish really stood out. We got what we paid for. Upon enquiry with the restaurant, I was told that the corkage fee was HK$800 per bottle and the restsurant wouldn’t waive the same even with an order of a bottle from its wine list. So, it wasn’t worth bringing our own bottle. The markup on alcohol was steep. We ended up paying about HK$1,000 for a bottle of sake with a retail price pf around HK$250. The service was a bit rushed. The food came too quickly. At one point we almost didn’t have enough space on the table for the dishes. The staff were friendly and professional though. And I liked the lively ambience.
