West New Malaysia Reviews from The Last Year
My go to place for over 25 years when I want good Malaysian
My go to place for over 25 years when I want good Malaysian in Chinatown. I still remember when they used to be in the tunnel by the 5th precinct and was half the size then doubled and now moved to Bayard St. The food still remains the same, delicious as ever. The must eat is always curry beef brisket and their house special tofu but pretty much everything on their menu is great. Don't forget to get then Chendol Ice which is a great way to end your meal or eat it with your meal like a I do. Service here is quick and friendly which is always great.
I will absolutely be coming back here.
Roti canai was amazing. Char Kway Teow was amazing. Assam Laksa was quite good, although I did not detect any protein in it. Still very tasty though. Good service!

This is one of my two favourite Malaysian places in the city (along with Taste Good in Elmhurst). I grew up going to Nyona but the food quality has gone down over time, so it was well-timed when my friend suggested West New Malaysia. Although the dining area is quite small, their food packs a big punch. Of note, I always get the Hainanese Chicken Rice and Hokkien Char Mee as two staple dishes, and I do think West New Malaysia does it best. Their Hainanese Chicken Rice has perfect taste and a really good texture -- personally, I know it's supposed to be "soft", but I prefer it to have a bit of give. The Hokkien Char Mee is also excellent -- this KL street dish is made (correctly) with little nuggets of pig fat that when crunched, make for a textural foodgasm. With the in-house and take-out service being quick and freindly, I've been returning to here ever since I found out about it, even when I'm just solo dining. Check it out when you have a choice and don't let not having a companion stop you from these delectable dishes!

Hair in food BUT this is a solid and safe choice if you want a little twist on Cantonese food Seating is very plenty Portions are big Clean CC accepted The service was good because we went on a very slow day. Rainy Saturday 5-7PM. The dinner rush is 7-9PM. Princess Tofu The flavor was on point-- not too salty or oily! You can tell the tofu was deep fried ahead of time but fresh, ahead of time! Perhaps $21.95 for only 3 shrimp in the whole dish is the only complaint? Also, it is a little pricier than other Chinatown establishments.
I had a great time with some friends during lunch.
We ordered classic Southeast Asian dishes like Hainanese chicken, roti canai, mee siam, beef rendang, and Penang Asam Laksa. The mee siam and laksa were my favorite. The Penang Asam laksa is different from curry laksa because it uses tamarind-based flavors rather than coconut, which makes it more sour and spicy.

I came here for a big family lunch and we ordered a BUNCH of items because there were so many we wanted to try. There were some really delicious dishes and some that I would recommend skipping. Get: Roti Canai, Curry Stuffed Combination Soup (flavor was so great and soothing), Beef Rendang (great flavor and so tender) Skip: Hainanese Chicken (this was honestly kind of dry and not impressive), Indian Meee Goreng (didn't love the flavor combination here)

They lost some dishes since moving to the new location (like pattaya chicken), but their service improved despite the much higher traffic, and overall food quality remained as high as before, still at great prices (well, Bidenflation is not their fault and is raising prices everywhere). Do recommend.
Best Hainanese chicken (海南鸡饭) in Chinatown.
The chicken was as tender as it is in Singapore.
I have not been to the new location since the restaurant
I have not been to the new location since the restaurant moved but since my friend never had Malaysian food, I decided to give them a try to see if the quality I know have changed. Arriving at 2pm-ish the place was busy, but they were able to clear a table and quickly seated the six of us. Initially look shows that the place was clean, fairly newly decorated and similar in size. They have two storefronts that makes up the restaurant. In order to try as many things, my friends agreed to do family style at my suggestion and we ordered 3 appetizers, a rice dish, a noodles dish and 4 entrees. It was a feast. The wait staff were very helpful as we needed changed plates, forks, and knives through the meal. They checked on on us and ensure everything is satisfaction. Everything was delicious and well prepared. Highly recommended the Sarang (stir-fry in a taro nest), Hainese chicken, curry beef brisket, any of the fried flat rice noodles, and roti. I forgot how good Malaysian food had tasted. Definitely coming back here.
Good Malaysian option in Chinatown.
It was quite busy when we visited during a weekday lunch. Menu is quite extensive, with all of the regular Malaysian options. I ordered an Indian style noodle dish (can't recall the name). I actually didn't taste that Indian to me, but was still tasty (similar to pad Thai). I also tasted some of the Nasi Lemak, which was good (especially the coconut rice). Big portions, and reasonable price.
Ordered delivery through Grubhub but it got delivered
Ordered delivery through Grubhub but it got delivered directly by the restaurant. Got delivered quickly and accurately. Really good portions for the appetizers! The curry for the Roti Canai comes in little cups with lids. Roti was both crispy and chewy. Curry was flavorful with a little bit of heat. The chicken in the curry was tender. Satay chicken skewers were delish! Had that nice grilled taste. So much flavor. A little sweeter than expected, but our fave of the night. Chicken wings were good. A little dry, but good flavor and still tender. Not sure if we'd get this again though. Will have West New Malaysia on our list for our next visit to NYC/Chinatown! There's a lot more on the menu we want to try!
Great pork chops.
Recommending to have them with a glass of beer. The service was nice and attentive. The place overall is a nice spot for a date night or hanging out with friends. Side note - usual wait time is going to be around 30m during evening hrs for 2ppl so plan accordingly.

I ordered take out and it was great! I had the roti canai, curry beef brisket, and the mee Siam. The roti canai and curry beef brisket were delicious! The spice level was great too. I would not recommend ordering either if you do not like a little spice in your food. The take out was packed very nicely and I appreciated that they took the time to pack the food containers securely so nothing would spill or melt through the lids.
Worst restaurant in NYC
Probably the worst restaurant in NYC - would never return again beware. Definitely not somewhere you should visit there are better choices just down the road
