We live really close to Larchmont, so we've been to Vernetti a handful of times over the years. It's a pleasant restaurant, if not particularly exciting, and an easy last-minute reservation. The interior is attractive and comfortable, with big windows looking out onto Larchmont, and now there's a big outdoor set-up that probably doubles the dining space. It feels less makeshift than most COVID patios and I wouldn't be surprised if it stuck around. Service is generally good and I like the relaxed atmosphere. I'm also glad it serves alcohol, though of course it doesn't have a liquor license (the neighborhood would never allow it). There aren't many places you can get a glass of wine on Larchmont. The food is decent. There's a complimentary bread basket, and if you want appetizers, the fresh burrata and baked ricotta are solid. The ricotta is rich and warm, served with acacia honey, sautéed peppered apple, and crushed pistachios. The burrata comes with heirloom tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and reduced balsamic.Mostly, we get pasta here. I've enjoyed the rigatoni con salsiccia, with Italian sausage, sautéed rapini, sweet peppers, and Calabrian chili, and the linguine alla vongole, with Manila clams, white wine, garlic, and crushed red pepper. I've gotten the bucatini pesto alla Genovese con gamberi a couple of times. Once, it was fantastic, and once, kind of bland. It comes with grilled jumbo shrimp, basil, pine nuts, garlic, and pecorino. The gnocchi di spinaci is great, with fresh spinach, house ricotta, butter, and sage. If you like a stuffed pasta, try the ravioli di zucca with oven-roasted pumpkin, sage, and browned butter. My husband sometimes gets the tortolloni quattro formaggi with burrata, pecorino, house ricotta, fontina, white wine, and chives. It's very heavy and cheesy, if that's your thing. One time, I skipped pasta and opted for the grilled octopus, served with creamy white beans and a fennel and cabbage slaw. I don't know if I just got unlucky, but this was pretty bad, the octopus tough and rubbery. For dessert, I like the panna cotta with fresh strawberry "composta" (surely this is a typo for "compote"?), though I would also recommend hitting Salt & Straw or Jeni's after dinner.I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at Vernetti's, but it's a nice place and it's right here. I imagine I'll keep coming back as long as we're both in the neighborhood.
