Ugly Baby Reviews from The Last Year
Let me preface this by saying I used to love Ugly Baby! I
Let me preface this by saying I used to love Ugly Baby! I have been a few times over the years and really enjoyed the authenticity and spice of the dishes. That said, upon my most recent visit, service left a lot to be desired. My partner and I ordered a beer along with 3 dishes - we waited over 45 minutes, and still no dishes were brought to our table... Despite this, tables surrounding us who had ordered the same/similar dishes after us received their food before we did. Our waitress didn't have an explanation as to why our food continued to be delayed, or how much longer it would take. All in all, it was a really disappointing experience as we were really looking forward to a deliciously spicy meal.
This place was recommended by my cousin who is a spice
This place was recommended by my cousin who is a spice lover. I should've known it's a small place with loud music, but it was a pretty fun atmosphere. Tables were a bit small and on top of each other, but we sat at the bar. I didn't read before, but I read them. I see would've been warned about some of the things I ran into I'm a vegetarian and there's nothing on the menu so I asked and they said they could make a veggie stirfry which sounded very lame fried rice could have fried rice and they said no about a couple things and gotta know as well I was already really hate it on this place, but I got to admit the veggie stirfry was really good very spicy and flavorful. I see other people saying that they put fish oil in the dishes, which I did not ask about that is pretty cool if that's true, I don't care so much about it, but I imagine other vegetarians would feel very violated. Also, I saw another person post about being told to leave and that happened to us after paying the bill like a minute later we were told leave prices are also pretty expensive, like $30-$40 per plate seemed very high to me but the dishes look pretty fancy definitely the menu needs some pad Thai.
Heard about how great this place is, glad to finally have
Heard about how great this place is, glad to finally have tried it. Honestly I had a great meal here, though we only ordered two things. I think my critique is that on Friday at 7pm, they had already sold out of at least 4 or 5 items off the menu. Luckily the menu is large enough where that wasn't too bad, but I was excited to try some of the things that were sold out. Regardless - SEA BREAM - this was really tender, and the topping really added a texture that was super satisfying. The crisp outer skin provided a nice texture too. Would def recommend. CHICKEN CURRY - the chicken thigh in this was extremely tender, and it had a nice heat running throughout it but I was expecting it to be hotter surprisingly! The curry was tasty, the rice was fluffy - I was pleased. I like that the menu has a lot of items that aren't typical for Thai restaurants which speaks to authenticity. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable on the menu. Because of how popular this place is, you may be ushered out of your table soon after paying.
We had a wonderful Thai style dinner here.
The staff was very good about explaining the different levels of spicy hotness and understood that their definition or medium would equate to hot for some people. The waitstaff was efficient and friendly. However, be aware that you are allowed one opportunity to order only. In other words, don't get two dishes to share if you think you might need three. Our waiter also did a good job explaining the portion sizes of the different dishes. All and all a very pleasant dining experience in a casual and comfortable environment.

I recently visited Ugly Baby with a friend and had quite the experience. This was a Thai food experience like no other - it definitely left an impression! The quality of food and attention to detail was superb. We were very pleased with the taste of the food - the flavours were amazing, the presentation was beautiful, and we could tell there was quite a lot of preparation that went into the dishes. The service was great and they were very attentive throughout our experience. They ensured they recommended certain dishes based on our comfort with spice and the ordering process was a nice conversation with our server. However, I will say that it was a spicy experience! Although there are dishes with different spice levels, this is definitely something to note. The restaurant was very cute, but at times it was a sensory overload that wasn't super cohesive - loud rock music, many vibrant colours, really yummy aromas, and super amazing spicy tastes. The only thing that was a little bit disappointing was that they sold out of about 6-7 dishes by the time we got there (about 9pm) which we were really excited to try - my recommendation would be to go earlier, although you may have to wait a little bit longer. Overall, I would go back and definitely recommend.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience dining here! The food
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience dining here! The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. When we arrived around 9PM on a Saturday, many of the popular dishes were sold out however our waiter did a fantastic job at describing the other dishes that were available. Our waters were consistently refilled and the wait for our dishes to come out was not too long. The ambiance was a little questioning as hard rock music was blaring throughout the restaurant, which took away a little from the overall experience. Overall, the food, customer service, and experience was wonderful!
Ugly Baby has been on my list but they do not take
Ugly Baby has been on my list but they do not take reservations and only walk-ins (full party has to be there). We went on a Thursday night at 7pm and waited 30 minutes. The restaurant is so color and they have seasonal menus. The waiter strongly recommended not ordering their very spicy dishes for our first time there but I wish he hadn't so we could try their spicy food. Their mild / medium dishes were not spicy at all to me, as someone who love spicy food. The food is good and the wait isn't bad if the weather outside is decent while standing outside.
I see a lot of negative reviews here about how the food was
I see a lot of negative reviews here about how the food was too spicy. Ugly Baby is synonymous with spice, but they take lots of care to make sure it can be an enjoyable experience for all spice tolerances. There are plenty of mild options on the menu, the servers warn you extensively beforehand on the spice level before ordering (even suggesting dish combinations for balanced spice levels), they provide unlimited rice to help combat the spice, and they are also very attentive with water refills. All this to say, it's not the restaurant's fault if you ignore all the disclaimers and then realize that you're not actually up to the challenge. Anyways, Ugly Baby is walk-in only with a small number of tables and very popular, so I would strongly recommend coming right at their 5pm opening time. Unfortunately, the earliest I could come was around 6pm on a Saturday, and already they were sold out of all of their spiciest dishes (the ones with an emoji on the menu). In order of preference, we got the the fried sea bream with turmeric and the tay ho (pork belly with morning glory and lime curry). The sea bream is not spicy at all so a perfect choice for milder palettes. I love whole fish dishes and this one was no exception, and the fried exterior and turmeric bits added a nice crunch. The tay ho was really good as well, spicy for sure but not punishingly so. I loved the acidity of the lime but would've preferred more pork or morning glory. They have a rotating menu so there's no shortage of dishes to try. I definitely plan to come back and risk it all for one of their emoji dishes!
Ok friends, I really wanted to love this place - as a big
Ok friends, I really wanted to love this place - as a big Thai food fan - but it fell short for me. There was a line out the door at 5pm when they open, and they only let you sit down when your entire party is there. Came with a group of 6 and split a bunch of their dishes. We tried chicken thighs, ribs, this beef with kiwi dish, Khao soi, and a fish curry. I normally eat spicy foods just fine, but unfortunately, I was not prepared for the spice level here! My boyfriend was especially unprepared and even got a bad case of gastritis afterwards. Maybe it was an off day, as they do have a seasonal menu, but I probably won't be back!
Warning this place will make you cry like an ugly baby!
Warning this place will make you cry like an ugly baby! Their spice level should not be taken lightly! I could only do 1 level, and I was dying. You can really taste how authentic the thai dishes were. This is not your typical pad thai restaurant. Honorable mentions were: - Chrysanthemum tea (addicted, ordered around 3) - Beef shank panang - sparerib tips and pork hock - durian sticky rice dessert: it was a warm durian with condensed milk Disclaimer: they do not take reservations, space is very small (expect a wait), and you have to order everything the first time due to the time constraint
Awesome spicy curry
Simply delicious, fast and friendly service. 100% recommended for people that like it spicy but still want to taste the food.
Authentic Thai Cuisine
Best Thai restaurant in NYC and beyond. The menu changes with the season. Follow them on Instagram for updates. Everything on the menu is great! This is not your typical "American Thai" with loads of sugar and no flavor. This is also Thai level spicy so if you have issues with super spicy follow your servers advice and order accordingly. They currently do not take reservations, so get there early.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
