quick stop between shows
we popped in between shows and the service was quick and attentive. HH is after 8:30p or 8p depending on the day. we had avo salmon roll, tofu edamame salad and avo salad. they don't allow you to buy a bowl of miso soup unless you're ordering certain (pricey) entrees.

This place is a great place to go to eat a casual meal with friends and family. It is a great price for the quality and portion of food. The ramen bowls are enormous and taste amazing and with two or three rolls of sushi it is the perfect amount to fill you up. The menu was varied and had lots of cool and different options to eat. In my opinion I think that this is a great all around restaurant that I would eat at again. The staff was kind and attentive, I would recommend this place to anybody who likes ramen/udon/sushi or wants to try something new that is a fun experience.

This place is a good choice for eating ramen. Both soups that we ordered were very delicious! I would highly recommend it. They have a happy hour for lunch with discounted main courses. The Wagyu spicy noodle soup and the cream of salmon were both top-notch. Unfortunately we discovered it during our last day while hurrying to the airport.

Brought a friend here on a Saturday evening. It was busy but we had a resy and were seated right away. Our waiter also greeted us quickly, took our drink order, came back with the drinks, then took our dinner order. Our giant udon bowls came quickly and we took our time to savor every delicious mouthful. The veggies, meat, and broth were all superb!!! This is such a great place for delicious, comfort food! I HIGHLY recommend!

Was INCREDIBLE!!! I brought my sister and our niece. We all ordered different udon bowls and all devoured every last drop of broth. Food came super quickly and was amazing and the specialty drinks were delicious. Service was quick, friendly, & professional. I HIGHLY recommend!

Grabbed an early dinner before a play here with three friends. Loved the atmosphere upon arrival and the service was prompt. Food came out faster than we anticipated and was tasty. Ordered the Sizzling Sukiyaki w/beef and it was very tasty. I've been to the one in Hawaii as well which both were consistent in the quality of food.
Be the first to ReplyNo longer Reliable good food and service
This has become our regular goto since they opened. Mainly because it is fresh, yummy and Japanese done just right. Their tempura is not overly greasy and fried in fresh non-rancid oil. Their sushi is always fresh and some items arrive directly from Japan. I have entertained many people here and they really enjoyed the noodles which is their specialty. Noodle Soup in Curry, Miso, Soyu... you name it they have it and done with right about of bite/chewy. Not al dente as Italian pasta is expected because their thin and thick Udon are meant to be slightly over cooked but not soggy. Good balance. Great ambiance and good service. Always busy. But accommodating. The receptionist is exceptional (at least the main one) who is a hard worker and keeps the crowd moving as soon as a table is cleared up. โ- Updated 2023 Sashimi no longer as fresh than pre-2020 as turnover is much less. Still excellent udons. Another reason for 3 star is wait staff attitude. Normally I tip 20-23% in NYC but with bad attitude from todayโs waiter makes me NOT ENJOY my time eating thereโpart of the reason people go out for a meal.
Be the first to ReplyGreat sushi/udon combo
Came in for a soup and ended up with an unexpected sushi plate. And it was excellent. It included uni, a rare piece of in a lunch special in NY. After sushi, little room was for udon. The broth was a bit salty but overall, it was and excellent meal.

The food was good, I got the sukiyaki udon and my daughter got the tempura udon. The tempura was nice and crispy and has good flavor. I normally don't order sukiyaki when getting udon but I wanted to try it...it was delicious. Portions were generous. The one star docked is because the person who brought us to our table rudely said they were extremely overbooked on reservations and we needed to be out within 90 minutes. We would've been done anyway but that isn't the best way to give a good first impression when seating diners. If you like udon, this is the place for you! (They do have a lot of other things on the menu as well)

One of my very favourite restaurants in the world. I always try to go whenever Iโm in New York. The truffle udon is incredible, Iโd fly just for that. Everything Iโve had hear has been fantastic, the cocktails are also worth staying longer.

Never dissapoint us. We always visit this restaurant during our visit to new york. This place gives us the comfort that we seek. The wagyu udon is our favorite.
Be the first to ReplyBig Bowls of Udon
We came here on a snowy NYC evening and warmed ourselves up with their big bowls of udon.
This location was was huge with multiple floors versus the more traditional one we last ate in Kyoto.
The large menu covered sushi, rice bowls and of course a large variety of udons from cremes, curries, traditional and upscale truffles and wagyu beef. From Monday through Friday there was a happy hour discount (a couple bucks off) on most of the appetizers and udon bowls menu.
The wagyu beef udon was so rich and a standout with truffles. The regular beef udon also was good. Noodles were chewy and plentiful in a dashi broth.
The tempura was lightly fried and one of the tastier tempuras weโve eaten in awhile. Served on the side, it came with shrimp, sweet potato, shiitake and enoki mushrooms, seaweed.
Service overall was quick and good. Next time will come during happy hour.
Udon and more
Japanese casual in NYC with an Udon twist.
As their name suggests, come here for the Udon. They have a variety of that which means you get to pick what they put in your Udon noodles and broth. Just plain is also fine, but we had katsu curry and wagyu beef as well. The wagyu flavor was kind of lost so I might not recommend that, not cause it was bad, but it is not the way to eat wagyu. The side of sushi that you get with the plate is a good deal for the price.
Some of the other reviews are strange. It is very hard to get vegetarian in Japan, unless you go a a vegetarian restaurant. Most broth has meat or seafood in it. So do not expect that here.
All Day Happy Hour!
Great place to hang out, order some appetizers and a Sapporo.
We had great customer service and the food of good quality/quantity for the price.
Bad customer experience
Very bad customer and family expรฉrience in the TsuruTontan E 16th. Very long waiting time, bad table and long time to be served.
Especially we have our kid with us. And the food was below the expected standards from this restaurant. Last time I will eat there.
Bad customer experience.
Very limited for non-meat eaters
If you are a vegetarian or a pescatarian you will have just one option of udon. All the other options are made with chicken or beef broth and this can not be substitute. It was very disappointing as this is not mentioned in their online menu. We ended up having some sushi which was nothing special and the rice to fish ratio was too big.
Be the first to ReplyBest authentic udon in the city
Came here on a busy Saturday and this place was completely packed. Wait was over an hour so my group and I decided to get drinks else where prior to sitting down. We ordered the curry deluxe 24, beef udon, small order of uni and salmon roe, and also the spicy tuna rolls. Wow these bowls are massive and packed with so much broth and udon. The Japanese curry was mild and rich in flavor. You want to eat the katsu and tempura rather quickly as they do get soggy. The beef in the udon comes out a little rare and you'll want to dip it in the broth a lil longer for it to cook. The small sized uni and salmon roe was perfect with our dish. I was really please with the service here. We felt like we had 3 servers at all times. The restaurant has a cool dark ambient feel to it. Extra comfy leather chairs and plenty of sitting for large parties. I really enjoyed my experience here. Flavors were on point and the massive bowls blew me a way. Highly recommend this to anyone that loves udon and authentic Japanese cuisine.
Be the first to ReplySolid Udon in Comfortable Setting
I enjoy coming here when I am meeting friends and want to guarantee a space to eat as they take reservations. The space is also quite spacious and clean and perfect for larger parties if you make a reservation. They have plenty of options of udon for every person, hot and cold udon and specials throughout the year. The prices are pricey for udon but the quality is top notch. One special thing I like about this place is that you can get extra udon, labeled as regular or large, when you order for no extra cost. If you're looking for a good asian spot in Union Square, I'd recommend to give this place a try.
Be the first to ReplyGreat udon noodles and broth!
Fantastic broth and udon noodles. Very nice sushi too. Big portions. Great service. 10/10 would recommend. Book in advance (can do it on the same day via app), it gets busy!
Be the first to ReplyHealth Grade B
I come here at least twice a month with my girlfriends for 2 reasons:
1- Bar has Happy hour all day
2- Food is pretty tasty and inexpensive โ just be AWARE they received *GRADE B* (eewww)
Now lets move on to the NOT SO GOOD part โ
Bartender is the grumpiest/ slowest person alive (or at least in NYC!). Bar is ALWAYS empty and still takes him about 10 โ 15min to take our orders and he always place our drinks all together in front of one of us (we are usually 4 people!!) leaving to us the job of distributing
You are probably asking why do we keep going back right? Answer is pretty simple, we go to the gym next door and is just a lazy option for us to grab a cheap drink/ catch up before heading home.
Busy place for lunch
We were here on Columbus Day and boy was the place crowded. It took a while to get there because of the nearby parade rendering the street almost impossible to access unless on foot.
There were 7 of us and we ordered the fried chicken, the seared salmon and snow crab roll, tuna avocado roll, crispy corn, cold uni don, katsu don, katsu curry, mentaiko ankake udon, beef udon and sizzling sukiyaki udon. You can choose large portion of udon noodles or small. The portions were huge and needless to say, we had loads of leftovers even though we had opted for the small portion of noodles and two of us even shared a bowl.
The udon which I enjoyed the most was the cold uni udon (thin noodle).
Overall, it was a nice experience and everyone had a great time. Service was friendly and prompt. Hope to go back again soon!
