Excellent
Amazing dinning experience. The Classic Ramen was best we’ve ever had, and the Gyoza delicious. It was elevated dining, but not too much so for our kids who are old enough to sit mostly still. The service was excellent, we’d definitely go again. Not a cheap, or quick family meal though.

Absolutely loved it. Noodle, soup - real authentic Japanese ramen. I’m a big fan of ramen needle and have had many in Japan, too. Finally found one I like in NYC. Side dishes are great. The modern decor with Japanese twist. I wish the server was a bit more friendly. Over all, Ton him is a must visit place. Can’t wait to go back!

Picked this restaurant as my Sunday Stroll last week for my upcoming novel "Table for One." That's a joke yelp please don't take my elite status away for self-promotion. Well let's call it a half joke. Anyways, this place is IDEAL for solo dining. I have high standards for ramen as I have had a plethora of it when I was galavanting in Japan... yeah I'm like that. I make the walk from the Wayland in Alphabet City (review coming soon), and I walk in and ask if they have any availability for 1 and they said there is room at the bar. Perfect. I sit down and have a digital menu which is the norm now, although I miss physical menus with all of my soul. The bartender was inviting and welcoming, and with his help I decided to order the Shrimp Tempura hand roll and the Tonkotsu Ramen. I was debating getting a drink as the vibes were UP, but mid-day on a Sunday I just couldn't pull the trigger. The tempura handroll came first and was a nice appetizer for the ramen after I just banked like 4,500 steps to get to Midtown. The ramen came next and the broth was absolutely perfect, and really helped the violent hangover I had from the night before due to all that mezcal. Overall, Tonchin absolutely blew me away. I really thought no ramen in NYC could touch Ichiran, but we may have found its match. The Thor to Ichiran's Loki. The Frazier to Ichiran's Ali. The Roark to... ahahah jk I'm done with those. Love Speech! IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__

We didn’t have reservations but hoped to get in on a Thursday night - two of us. Offered two at the bar or a long wait, we took the former. It did not disappoint, and we’d happily return despite the bar stools being very tight to the bar. Service was very attentive and the food was excellent with the exception of the edamame, which was a tad soggy. The other dishes were exceptional.

This place has been on my radar for some "ramen in NYC" exploits after reading all the reviews and the "best ramen in town" lists where it is prominently featured. All in all, a solid experience although my personal ramen hit list is safe (for now). Word of caution, the entrance to this place is very inconspicuous, took a few walks up and down the street to see the discreet door :D Look for the Jerusalem cafe as your landmark and then a bit to the side of it. Inside, it is a cool industrial/minimalistic vibe, which I absolutely loved. The front of the house folks are mostly friendly and accommodating. As for the food, both my daughter and I went for the classic ramen: the tonkotsu pork broth and the roasted pork were absolutely delicious. The noodles were fine, I wish they had options to choose from though. What was a bit of a let-down was the [absence] of spice: we both had to ask for extra chili oil as ramen was missing any kick at all. Makes me wonder if the chili just somehow missed our bowls on the way to the table... All in all, I would probably go back to taste other items on the menu as they seem to have a few big hits. But would go to Ramen Danbo for my "noodle soup fix".
Be the first to ReplyYummy Asian place
Awesome Asian fusion place. Great ramen. Must have the chicken Tsukune buns, the maguro (either, but we love the classic) the chicken wings with curry and cheese, and the cold chicken mazemen noodles. The shave ice dessert is a house specialty: the coffee one tastes like tiramisu. Yum!

We were a group of 5 people so we had to wait about 40 mins. There weren’t really a table for 5 so we were squeezed into a 4-seated table. It was very small. They were several interesting menus but I ordered the smoked dashi one. I found the ramen pretty good but not so very special. I think other menus are GOOD. Not just standard but GOOD. The buns, the rice ball, and even dessert!

Tonchin restaurant - New York We are a group of 5 people and visited New York from December 26, 2022 to January 6, 2023. Since one of us is celiac (severe celiac disease), every time we booked a dinner we made sure several times at the restaurants that gluten-free options were available, meaning not only as gluten-free food but also cooked in order to avoid contamination. There were no problems whatsoever in any restaurant visited during our stay (Smith and Wollensky, Peak restaurant, Peter Luger, Ilili 5th Avenue, Tamarind Tribeca etc.), except for the Japanese restaurant Tonkin (36th W street and 5th avenue). We chose this restaurant as it was marked on the Michelin guide and appreciated by many visitors. We then booked a dinner for the evening of January 5th at 9:00 pm. However, on January 2 one of us personally went to the restaurant to make sure there was a possibility of having gluten free options. This verification was repeated again on January 3, and the present waitress confirmed that the celiac person could have eaten “everything but ramen and noodles”. We then shared on our chats the menu available on the site https://www.tonchinnewyork.com/midtownmenu, checking the presence of many other dishes (maguro, rice balls etc) in addition to ramen and noodles. On the evening of January 5 we go to the Tonchin restaurant and we are greeted by the same waitress we had met on January 3 who in fact, after asking for the name on the reservation, greeted us saying "you are the group with the celiac person". To our confirmation, however, the waitress added that the celiac person could only have eaten “three salads and edamame”, that is only cold dishes. Surprised by this different information, we pointed out that the same waitress only two days before had assured that the person could have eaten everything but noodles and ramen and that becoming aware of this limitation only at that moment put us in serious trouble. The waitress then asked us to wait saying that she would check with the cook again. After a few minutes, she confirmed that the only dishes available were the cold ones (not even all), that is only three salads and edamame. Waiting for our obvious difficulty (at that time it would not have been possible to find another restaurant available for 5 people) we asked to be able to talk to the manager. After a few minutes a boy showed up to us, qualified as the person in charge who initially apologized for the inconvenience but confirmed that it was not possible to offer the celiac guest any hot dish, we pointed out that we had come by twice in the previous days and that the information provided to us had been completely different but he kept saying that unfortunately it was not possible for them to prepare any hot gluten free dish for the celiac guest. Since it was not possible to find another restaurant available at that time and the group was also made up of two children (12 and 14 years) who were supposed to have dinner, we decided to stay anyway. The manager walked away saying he would go and check if the table was ready already. After a few minutes, however, the same manager returned saying that “because of our behavior” the waitress felt “uncomfortable” to serve us and therefore told us that we could not have dinner at the restaurant and that we should leave. Incredulous by such inexplicable behavior we asked what our behavior could have ever been but the person in a confused way and gesturing with nervousness, told us that we had never been to the restaurant before nor had we ever asked for information because he had never seen us and invited us to leave the place. At our request for explanation, the manager kept repeating that we should have left the venue, even when we informed him that we would call the police to report what was happening. The boy was even more nervous and kept repeating that he had never seen us. Waiting for the crowd of people who had meanwhile piled up behind us, we decided to leave the restaurant. The very serious behavior of the staff of the Tonkin restaurant (the various information provided to us, having lied about our presence in the previous days, the last-minute decision not to want to serve us) caused a great inconvenience to all of us, not only because a group of 5 people (including two children) was left without dinner and the possibility of booking another restaurant, but above all because unjust discrimination and humiliation was carried out against a person and the whole group that accompanied him. This behavior is unacceptable for any restaurant, but it is even more so if the place is also valued to be reported by the Michelin guide (we hold, at this point, undeservedly) and – moreover – should be an expression of the proverbial kindness and welcome of the Japanese people (in this case completely absent).

Everything we liked here, starting from waiting time, service, value and the most importantly food. One of the best ramen in town but not only.

Be the first to ReplyNot worth it...
I made the reservation for Tonchin on October 10th for a dinner (for one) on October 31st. I arrived promptly on time (7pm) and was sat at the bar right away. I ordered a shrimp tempura rice ball starter and the classic ramen along with a coke. The bar staff that were serving me were kind but to the point. There was nothing beyond the normal greeting and thanks. The starter (the shrimp tempura rice ball) was quite good and gone in a few bites. While eating my starter, two other guests were seated next to me on both sides. They ordered while I was eating the starter. At around the 25 minute mark when the other guests next to me received their food, I started to get concerned. At the 30 minute mark, I was glancing at the bar staff to see if there was any news on my ramen. It was 35 minutes later that the guests next to me (two separate guests, both arrived 15-19 minutes after me) received their ramen. I waited another 5 minutes (total of 40) when I told the bar staff that were serving me that, “It’s been 40 minutes for the ramen – at this point I don’t want it and I’d just like the check.” The staff member did just that – got the check, dropped it, and walked away. Not once in 40 minutes of a 2 foot distance at all times did any member of staff say, “Let me check on your order,” nor did anyone at all even offer an apology. Not a syllable of conciliation that I waited 40 minutes for a bowl of ramen that just never arrived. It’s a shame – I waited weeks to try this place and to just be shrugged off like it was no big deal was really disappointing. There’s an attitude that really isn’t worth it when basic hospitality is missing. Koku Ramen just a couple of blocks down is fantastic without any of the attitude.

Utterly delicious food, friendly staff, great atmosphere! Found it by chance whilst staying close by. The ramen dishes were so full of exciting flavours and all cooked and presented beautifully. My son had the chicken wings and said these were the best he’d ever tasted! Would highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a wonderful restaurant
I took my daughter last night. We had booked but due to jet lag asked for an earlier table, which they happily accommodated in a completely packed restaurant, which had a great atmosphere. And then the food and service… Wow. Our server Imari was an absolute superstar - thank you. The Japanese Old Fashioneds were delicious as was the sake. Rhe shishito peppers and the ramen were the best I have ever had. Gyoza were also amazing. I didn’t vibe so much with the shoestring fries - they were cut too small or the wings - overcooked IMO that’s splitting hairs because it was a wonderful experience. Highly recommended. We found it via the Michelin Guide.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Again
We have eaten here a few times and it continues to be reliably excellent. This time we had take out (boil at home noodles) and it was wonderful. Sometimes ramen is not very good as take out, but Tonchin is able to keep the flavor and texture of their dishes as 5 star when you reheat at home.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Michelin starred ramen
This a Michelin star Japanese restaurant 3 years running. Reservations via Resy are highly recommended. The richness and authenticity of the the ramen here definitely helps Tonchin earn its rating. My friend and I ordered the bites sampler which included the crispy garlic salt shishito, zesty tonchin tonchin cucumber and the vegan oyster mushroom. The crispy fried garlic with the lightly grilled shishito was perfect. Great textures and extra crunch in every bite made it delicious. If you love cucumbers and mushrooms definitely order this sampler.
My friend and I ordered the classic Tonkotsu and the miso ginger ramen. The Tonkotsu broth was perfect with the right amount of balance, flavor and salt. The roasted cha-shu pork was thinly sliced and perfect with each spoonful of broth. The vegetarian miso ginger broth packed a lot heat. Beware if you can't handle the spicy level you'll be sweating the whole night. We really enjoyed our experience here. Flavors are on point and even with the Michelin star you won't be breaking the bank. Expect a 60-90 minute way on prime busy weekend evenings. I will definitely be back to try some of their cocktails and other ramen broths.
Just OK
Not as good as Ippudo in the east village. We had the fried fish bun which was ok, the Tonchin classic tonkotsu ramen was very good but the smoked dashi ramen was too salty. The pan fried gyoza were good.

The place is great, fast serviced, and has great food. What I did try were the edamame, shrimp tempura, and the Tan Tan ramen.
The food is phenomenal and has great taste, it brings me back to when I work for two months over there. Excellent food.
On of the best Japanese/Ramen places in Manhattan
Had a superb dinner at this Japanese Ramen restaurant. It has more than ramen to offer, and their Margarita is a must, but their classic ramen is heavenly. So many flavors in one dish, you’ll feel in a local Place in Tokio. I had a smile on my face from the first sip. Couldn’t stop eating. Make sure you make a reservation a day or two before you arrive, as this place is very popular.
Be the first to ReplyShocked at how affordable this very delicious food is
Food was delicious. Best ramen I have ever had. The depth of flavor of the broth was amazing, Noodles were perfectly made. Presentation of the gyoza was a WOW, and the flavor to match. Maguro was a highlight of the meal - yum! Shishitos were the best I have ever had.
Service was very good.
Two reasons for 4 stars rather than five
1) Watched the waitress clear a carafe of water off a table, marry it with another container and re-serve it.
2) Loved sitting outside, but the table for two was very small and flimsy.
Amazing food
I am enthusiastic about my experience here. We tried several dishes, and all of them were excellent. I had 4 different small bites, that is a smart idea to try several tastes. Yes, the ramen is spectacular. The Japanese cocktail made me fall in love.
Be just aware that you can order up to 10 PM, even drinks.
The place has a pleasant atmosphere, stylish but informal.
Highly recommended.
