Fantastic every time!
We have eaten here a few times and cannot fault it. The food is excellent, every dish has been delicious. The service is really good; friendly and attentive. We always look forward to returning.
Be the first to ReplyGreat fresh fish and interesting flavours
Excellent and inventive cooking of very fresh fish. Great flavours. Friendly service. All in all a great experience. Highly recommended.

Superb lunch of tempura fish and Hake The desert was so nice I could have licked the dish Bread and butter pudding (nothing like your mother used to make) Little cubes of buttery hazelnut bread, marinated raisins, cider apples and egg custard topped with a scoop of ice cream Great service in warm and friendly surroundings

Excellent service, atmosphere, food and value. Winter deal for 2 or 3 courses but I would eat here any time.
Be the first to ReplyGood meal spoilt by room temperature!
I usually book the Tolcarne once a year when i holiday here. On this occasion the weather for Cornwall was bitter - i am used to this, living in Shropshire. The menu was straightforward and all staff encountered were attentive. The problem that we had was the "slow" front door, allowing cold air in. We became to dread anyone else entering or leaving the restaurant . The food came in good time and was really tasty, but the whole experience was soured by the room temperature - just not appropriate. After waiting to come for over 12 months, i really couldn't wait to leave! The gas fire was working in the fire place, but not up to the job.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing cold visit
When I booked lunch I asked if we could sit next to the fire away from the door having read that other reviewers had been cold. It turned out that the fire was gas though it looks like a live fire. Its small and had a guard around it which blocked most of the heat but even when I moved this proved to be pretty useless. We were cold despite having several layers on and my feet were freezing in trainers and thick socks. Although the food is good quality we found it bland. When asked for feedback when our plates were collected after our soup course I said that it was tasty but that it was a bit bland/boring. The dark haired waitress pulled a face and said "Its the first time I have heard that". After our main course we were asked again. This time having had this rude response I just said "It was fine". Actually it was mediocre. Restaurants complain that customers do not give feedback at the time but resort to reviews. Maybe you need to give some thought to why this may be. We did not stay for pudding as we really wanted to be somewhere warm
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely Freezing - Very poor customer service ,profit first is clearly the owners priority.
We had a meal at The Tolcarne last week as part of their 10 year anniversary. Whilst the food was very good unfortunately it was so cold inside that the food was luke warm by the time it arrived and cold by the time we finished each course. Looking around the pub at least 75% of customers were having to wear coats and hats to try and keep warm. We spoke to our waiter and even asked for tea towels to try and stop the freezing draft coming through the windows. One of the two fires wasn’t lit and the one that was on hardly radiated any heat at all. The front door took an age to close when people came in and the outer door was left wide open. All in all the freezing cold spoilt our evening and we were glad to leave. Unfortunately no apology or intervention was made by management staff despite our comments throughout the evening. You don’t expect to pay such high prices to have such poor customer care. We have emailed the Tolcarne on 10/12/22 to voice our concerns but a week later we still have had no response so feel we have no alternative to publicise our complaints. Nice food but avoid in the winter and if you have already booked , wrap up warm and eat up quick !! Clearly maximum profits trumps customer care. Shame Only marked two stars as the food was nice.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, little out of the way
We had sardines and scallops as starters - both great. Gurnard and pollock mains. Again really happy with both. The food makes the place. The atmosphere and creature comforts not to the same standard, There were only 3 tables occupied so there was no real atmosphere and there seems to be no heat in the place - it was cold.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday Meal
Booked for a meal while on holiday for my partner's birthday and wasn't disappointed - food & service was excellent and the Waitress was brilliant in explaining the different fish to a newbie like myself. Would definitely recommend!! My only "complaint" would be that we got drenched walking to the restaurant and when we arrived the heating wasn't working but don't let this put you off!
Be the first to ReplyImpromptu Lunch, fabulous!
Came in without a reservation on a Monday just after half term and got a table no problem. Good menu, pretty much all fish based (which suits us!) The Lemon Sole was great, really well cooked with a lovely sauce, and the Fish Tempura also excellent. Plus well kept beer - a great glass of Tribute to wash it down! Really lovely staff, couldn't do enough to help and insisted on bringing drinks ordered at the bar over to the table. TOP TIP - go to The Packet Inn as well, on the road to Helston, same owners and a more diverse menu - excellent for Sunday Lunch.

Àte here yesterday evening and the food was class!
Had the cod fritters and sardines to start, monkfish and cod and finished with a apple tarte tin. Can't recommend this restaurant enough. Will be back soon at this gem!
Disappointed
For a meal that was not cheap we were disappointed. The hake starter had little taste and the orange sauce with the salsify on the main course was far, far too sweet so that we were surprised it had left the kitchen. The rhubarb pudding was excellent and service was very good but at £50 a head it wasn’t what we expected.
Be the first to ReplyWONDERFUL HARBOUR SIDE INN
We called in this lovely whitewashed Inn, which must date back many years, for drinks one dismal night in March!
We were warmly greeted, and spent a good hour or more in this charming comfortable pub by the fire . What could be better!
Lovey but room for improvement.
Went for lunch after reading reviews & the menu on the website. Wasn’t that impressed with lunch menu options when arrived & menu was on a blackboard on the wall which you had to go over to read while the table in front was eating, was disappointed no scallops as advertised on website. Food was delicious however did think portions for lunch was small & more like a starter size, would rather pay more & get a wholesome delicious lunch. Had a nice feel about the place, nice modern decor but still could feel the history of the building. Staff very attentive & service was good. Checked website for menu it was last updated July 21 which I personally think is bad management & should be kept up to date. Would go again as food, wine, staff & ambience was lovely.

Beautiful ultra fresh seafood executed perfectly. Will be back. Friendly and professional service in a lovely setting.
We were lucky enough to get a cancellation during the February storm but will definitely book ahead for my next visit so we don’t miss this gem. First class.
Superb
50 yards from Newlyn Fish market so the fish better be good and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. Relaxed atmosphere but top drawer food and good wine list, Lunch with small plates but with a side each was more than enough. Highlights- homemade bread - gorgeous, salt cod fritters - wanted to order more as soon as had eaten, silver mullet - perfect pan fried with a superb rich deep pancetta sauce - smoky and delicious. Very clever mix of textures - hazelnuts great with sole. I look out for Michelin plate restaurants- great food at fair prices and this was overall top drawer. Great for families and kids also.

My wife and I have been wanting to visit Ben’s Tolcarne Inn for some time. We had to cancel last month but were delighted to visit today. Really super impressed. Very fresh and delicious menu. Ordered the mackerel, the salt cod fritters and the soup. Excellent wine selection also. Will certainly be returning. From one Tunnicliffe to another thank you Ben.

A midweek visit and so well worth it. A most delicious lunch and friendly and most efficient service. Wonderful fish and a carefully balanced menu.
We can certainly recommend it and will look forward to returning.
Very slow service and small portions
Lunch on a Tuesday - waited a very long time for our main courses. Food very nice but not enough of it for the price. When paying the bill we were asked if everything was satisfactory - when we said about the very long wait the waitress did not offer any apology but just said they were very busy! Would not recommend.
Be the first to ReplyNew favourite restaurant in our new home county.
One of my very rare 5/5 scores.
We were fortunate that our CEO decided to treat us all for a meal at Bens. It is a far cry from a normal pub lunch.
We have eaten at Steins and used to love Bens Cornish Kitchen in Marazion before he moved, this surpassed both of those establishments, the quality of the food taking us back to the speciality dining we enjoyed on pre pandemic cruises.
The prices aren't cheap but I would put it on a similar price point to the Seafood restaurant in Padstow but without the pretentious atmosphere. It isn't a place we could dine at every week but it is top of the list for special occasions.
The scallops and black pudding starter were a taste explosion that you would never think of combining, such out of the box thinking with a great result.
We'll see you on our anniversary.
