Pleasant enough but a touch disappointing
We stayed at Pelican Hill for a long weekend in the middle of a trip down the coast as we wanted to relax and enjoy the slower pace for a few days. Friends who live in the US, who have frequented Pelican Hill many times, recommended this to us as the premium place to unwind and enjoy luxurious surrounds. Loving the area as we do, we really looked forward to the experience. The positives were the staff - all very conversational, brilliant and personal service as you’d expect. The room was nice, some say dated, but to be honest we found it sizeable and comfortable. A few of the nights it was a bit cold so we put the fire on which was lovely. The toiletries were on point and we generally slept very well. The negatives for us were as follows: Food - really poor for this standard of resort. 3/5 maximum. I agree with other reviews who are simply baffled by the quality and finesse. It’s fine that it’s expensive, but it can’t be expensive and mediocre. The breakfast at the Colosseum in particular was just so dire that we went to Target and bought our own room supplies to avoid having it again. The tables were often all dirty and poorly attended, too. For dinner we drove out of the resort to avoid the food. Pool area - the pool itself is a wonderful shape and size, you’re not packed in with others when in the water, HOWEVER the loungers are all so close together, there is zero sense of privacy or luxury here, it’s like a spring break pool party with people all on top of each other. If you want a sunny spot for the day, you best get out there early, too. This is not premium. Beach - wow this was a waste of time. We were flabbergasted that the hotel would endorse use of the beach down the hill, it was honestly one of the worst beaches I’ve ever been to. The transport to go down and bags with towels and water is a lovely touch, but on arrival there are no loungers, nothing Pelican Hill… it’s just a public beach with a burger place. Admittedly the burger place looked good but we were so keen to get away, we caught the next trolley back. Others from hotel were similarly confused. Other guests - a lot of people use Pelican Hill as a day long party destination - I assume there are packages of some sort. These groups are disruptive and unpleasant in an environment of relaxation. To summarise, we are glad we had the experience but we wouldn’t return. It doesn’t feel like a good use of money to be honest. As European travellers we have access to amazing genuine five star luxury resorts which are set up for relaxation and a premium experience. As others from the UK have noted, this is missing here.

My family and I rented a villa at Pelican Hill for the weekend to celebrate my mother's birthday. It was absolutely spectacular in every way- resort and views were beautiful, service was impeccable- we couldn't have asked for anything more. The 3 bedroom, 3 bath villa was spacious and luxurious and the ocean views unforgettable. I have stayed at 5 star resorts all over the world, and I was very impressed with their attention to detail and thoughtfulness. We spent time at Crystal Cove beach and shuttle service was readily available. The villas have a private entrance, clubhouse and pool which make for an exclusive experience. My family had a wonderful time and said it ranks as one of the best vacations they have ever taken. Thank you Pelican Hill for making my mom feel like a V.I.P. on her special day!!

I stay here all the time. Sadly I have an emergency and have to drive back to LA because my dog is in the hospital. I tried to have them help me out with a refund or credit and basically they could not care less because it was booked thru a third party. I understand the third party would not reimburse, but they could have gave me credit for a future stay, specially since I stay here all the time, more like, since I USED to stay here all the time. Don’t get why people are not understanding of things that happen that are out of our reach.

Magnificent in every way - stay at a villa! Service : The service here is unparalleled and should be the standard for other 5 star establishments to strive for . Multiple family members stated it was the best service they ever received at a resort. Often resorts claim to be 5 star but fall short in this arena. I cannot begin to describe how excellent the service was. Every member of the team we interacted with blew us away with their service. From check in to the front desk , pool , hospitality , housekeeping , food and beverage etc. A special thanks to the wonderful concierges Kiara and Eliana . They were incredibly helpful. Room: Stunning. We stayed in a 4 bedroom ocean villa. The place was impeccable and very warm and welcoming. It had Old charm and sophistication. All the rooms were nice and there were 4 bathrooms. The master room was incredible with breathtaking views. The beds were so comfortable I had some of the best sleep I’ve had in years ! The villas are very quiet and there is more privacy. Would highly recommend Property : The property and grounds were impeccable. It’s an expansive and lush property that is expertly manicured. We enjoyed many scenic walks and lovely sunsets. Although the property is large they make everything convenient. It was very easy and fast to get A shuttle should you need one. Food: I was impressed with the pelican grill. Everything we ordered was delicious. Very nice ambiance and of course great service . Golf: I don’t golf but I was certainly able to appreciate the beauty of the two courses . My husband played the south course and really enjoyed it. The T times are however expensive and it’s a busy course Overall a phenomenal stay . Thank you to everyone at the pelican and hope to see you soon !

I stayed for work at Pelican Hill and it was not the best experience. Everyone has their preferences. I tend to be pretty down to earth and felt like I did not belong there. Over the years, as seen in my reviews I have stayed at places from Hampton Inn to Four Seasons. I rarely feel completely out of place but I did here. Beautiful resort, but not my comfort level.

Came here for a weekend getaway. The resort was lovely. We had a fireplace in our room and my kids loved the bath kit that was delivered to us. Whenever we needed to go to the main part of the resort we were picked up and returned in a Mercedes SUV. The food and drinks were really good. The staff were friendly and attentive.

Almost everything at this resort exceeded our expectations. The room was large and well maintained. The service was outstanding from the moment we arrived until the time we checked out -- even the housekeeping services attend to the tiniest details. The common facilities (main building, Coliseum pool and grill) are positioned in prime locations and enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific. You'll also be impressed with the Spa facilities that are included with your resort fee.

Pelican has long been one of my most favorite resorts I have ever stayed at. I was there over Presidents weekend with my family to play golf and relax. This was our 5th time there over the past 10 years. While the sights and sun of Newport coast never grow old, unfortunately the resort itself is trending hard in the wrong direction. The fine dining restaurant on site Andrea has remained closed post-covid. The only option now is the Colosseum, which lacks any inspiration or decent level of service whatsoever. We waited 30+ min one morning just get greeted and get coffee going. It felt like Europe where you feel like you need to get your order in when someone is actually speaking to you since you may not see them again for a while [and it was very normal volumes, not slammed whatsoever]. This service issue was the same at breakfast and dinner time, and also felt the same at the Grill in the golf club house. Not to mention a boring, dated menu with nothing exciting of note. Quality is passable at best. It just blows my mind that for a resort of this calibre, sitting in one of the wealthiest pockets of planet earth, with countless exotic cars rolling thru the valet, that they roll out this very mediocre food/service situation! What is going on here?! Bunglow rooms are now feeling dated. The size and architecture still make up for that bit, but getting tired. We also had to call and ask for the room to be cleaned 2/3 days. Golf course is a well run operation. Easy shuttle over/back (2 min). They get a ton of play, but the views are spectacular and it is quality resort style golf. Fun holes even if it wont make any best of list. Poa greens were very soft and bumpy with the recent rains. I love the hotel dearly, it is one of my favorite destinations but this underwhelming go around may have us looking at other options next time we are in the area.

This should have been a 5-star review. Lovely buildings and grounds. Great room. Almost all the employees we interacted with were friendly and professional. Excellent food. But ... When we checked out, the front desk refused to give us a summary of our charges. Never seen anything like it. Felt very shady. We were told that, because we had booked through Amex, they couldn't provide a bill. This has not been my experience at any other hotel. When my wife called the concierge to request help with transportation to a nearby restaurant, she was told she could use the hotel's "private limo." When she asked about the approximate cost, they couldn't tell her. The hotel was a few miles away. $1? $500? The concierge really had no clue? Very disappointing.
