The Quality Chop House London Reviews from The Last Year
A bit underwhelming!
We(five of us) opted for the fixed lunch…………….bad decision. The first course of pork croquettes was small but delightful and enjoyed by everyone. The Welsh Rarebit was quite tasty but unremarkable. Now for the main course………ham and egg. What can you do with ham (a bit chewy) and a fried egg ? Well, you rescue it with the confit potato. But as a main course, it was a disappointment. Our choice! The treacle tart dessert was OK. Overall, our visit to Quality Chop House, with its hard pew seats, didn’t live up to expectations. Value for money? No, but I’m from up North !
A warm dinner with the family.
the kind of kitchen was not my favorite. Burt all the other members of my family enjoyed it very much. their favorite dish was the potato confit. the stuff was kind and helpful.
Great Sunday lunch
One of the best Sunday lunches I’ve ever had! Attentive staff and great food at a very reasonable price! What more could you ask for? I will be back!
Delicious lunch
Fabulous set lunch as always .. celeriac soup with burnt butter; Galway mince with fabulously dressed watercress and a side of confit potatoes.
Terrible
I thought this was very much “okay” for the money that we spent - nearly 600 quid for four of us - the food was good but for 600 quid!!!!! I mean !!!! Value for money ? Absolutely not - and from start to end with the waiter hovering we felt that we were on a time line from beginning to end - would I go again? Absolutely not!
I just don’t know!
The QCH was recommended to me by a friend so I went ahead and booked. To be honest, I’m not sure why they recommended it and I will struggle to recommend it to others at the moment. I might have to have another visit then decide. The menu changes daily and whilst the one on the day wasn’t what I’d expected for a chop house, it certainly had some items you’d expect, plus some you wouldn’t. Neither myself or my dining partner were up for a 400g chop (or 800g bone in steak), nor the 40 - 60 min wait that came with them so we opted for “Yorkshire game, trimmings - Pheasant £28 | Mallard £34”. I opted for pheasant whilst my friend chose the duck. The menu was short on the description of them so we asked the waitress if they came with something. What she described sounded good, although she did say there were 3 sides with the dish, which seemed a bit much but we went with it. We didn’t order starters, which was a good decision. We consumed some tasty red wine whilst catching up on what has been going on in our lives so I’m really not sure how long our mains took to arrive but they looked slightly odd when they did. Presentation was unpretentious but also a bit confused. The pheasant (or Duck) were simply laid on the plate, another 1/3 was occupied by a jam-like substance (can’t remember what it was nor what it tasted of), and the other 1/3 was occupied by something else I can’t remember! On the side was a watercress and onion salad, what looked like a mini-shepherd’s pie (served in a mini-saucepan), and a plate of warm bread sauce with salty crisps to dip in them. I have to say the little mini-pie (it wasn’t a shepherd’s pie) was good, as was the bread sauce. The main plate of food was underwhelming though. I don’t think it helped that the steak knives we had were blunt - well I hope they were - but the pheasant was hard to cut through. It was at least cooked though. My friend’s duck was just about dead. She flipped it over and the underside was very red - bloody red - and cold. We asked the staff to cook it more thoroughly. They took it back and brought it back around 5 mins later but for 5 extra mins of cooking, it was barely warmer and still quite pink. Trying not to be one of ‘those people’ my friend lived with it, but it was still tough to cut through. When the plates were cleared, my friend fed back on the duck, which the waitress was very apologetic for. A couple of minutes later the presumably manager came over and apologised and asked what the issue had been. My friend explained again, which was again met by an apology and an offer to right the problem. We ordered dessert, a tasty pear tart, that went down very well at the end of the meal. When the bill came we thought the desserts may have been free of charge but they’d actually taken the more expensive duck option off the total. We were both unsure on what to take away from the evening. The service was excellent throughout. Dessert was good too. I think perhaps the main courses were just dishes that didn’t really come off in reality. The chef probably thought it all looked good on paper but the presentation was odd. The whole course was confused; almost trying too hard. I think I might go back in a few months and try something from the more traditional chop house options and then decide.
Unique experience
Experience didn’t disappoint. Asked the staff for recommendations and they were extremely knowledgeable. Had a mix of game, fish and meats. Cocktails also good. Staff were pro and made the difference. The small game pie side with Parmesan topping was a game changer !
Let down by the front of house
Poor service, good food. Paying £50 for a steak, you’d think the waiting staff would at least ask how you would like it cooked- not so. One of several disappointing interactions with a surly member of the waiting staff. This is an expensive restaurant where the service falls far short of expectations, leaving you feeling fleeced.
Rip off pricing, average food, terrible service
A really disappointing experience. The food is absolutely extortionately priced. £50 for a 300g sirloin steak on it's own is absolutely outrageous. Only three options of sides to go with your main course choice and they were beetroot salad, cavolo nero and potatoes. Only one of those is a half decent accompaniment for a steak. No sauce either. And to top it off - I wasn't even asked how I would like it cooked. There are myriad of great steak places in London - why would you go here? The service was also really poor. The menu, rather passively aggressively, tells you that chops will take 40 - 60 minutes to be served. When we simply asked on what side of the scale it would be for our table, we were told "it's a bit late in the evening to be on a schedule." It was 8.30pm. Overall this is a really over priced place with poor service. No redeeming features. Won't be going back.
I thought it was ok, but not something I'd recommend to
I thought it was ok, but not something I'd recommend to others. My sister really wanted to do a Sunday Roast while we were in London, did her research and this place came on top. I thought it ended up being good, but not great. We both started out with a Devon crab, nori cracker, sesame as a snack (not included). That was really good and I really enjoyed it. For my starter I had the cornish monkfish crudo, which I also really enjoyed. I got the brisket as my main and that I found just ok. My sister's piece looked a lot more rare, so maybe that's where it fell short for me. I like my meat very rare. I feel like it should be the star of the show and it was just fine. None of the sides really wowed me either. I found the Yorkshire pudding overly greasy, the roast potatoes were pretty good, the rest of the vegetables were fine. I appreciated that there was a cheese option with dessert, so I got the karst which I liked. They are very good with food restrictions though. I don't eat pork and they realized there was gelatin in one of the meats so they informed me and replaced it with extra of another. I didn't find anything about the atmosphere anything to comment on one way or another. It felt like a warm pub. I have to say, maybe it's all relative. We ate at three different Michelin star restaurants while we were there and nothing really wowed me, so this could be one of the better chophouses in London. However, I'm not rushing to come back.
BEST DINING EXPERIENCE DURING OUR WEEK-LONG LONDON VISIT
We are from the US went to many fine restaurants during our week-long visit to London, but this was our best overall dining experience. All food choices were delicious -- my wife and I shared a chateaubriand steak done perfectly -- the servers were friendly and attentive, and the authentic Victorian-era setting added a truly unique touch. We enjoyed talking with the manager Ashley -- a perfect host whose passion for quality dining was reflected not only in our dinner that night, but in the thoughtful restaurant recommendations he made for the remainder of our London stay. We enjoyed comparing notes on some top NYC restaurants too. We were treated by everyone as honored guests and it greatly enhanced an already superb meal..
Excellent food, albeit pricey.
Service was attentive without being overly intrusive. The ambiance is warm but a bit crowded. A must try is the absurdly delicious olive oil ice cream!
