Fabulous
Fabulous experience Saturday night. Food was wonderful and service was superb! Atmosphere is reminiscent of an old timey steak house and there was a live combo playing pleasant music
Be the first to ReplyHugely disappointing and massively overpriced
Extremely Poor Value, the thinly cut bone in ribeye $120 with no sides included. I’m all for paying $450 for two entrees and two drinks if it’s impressive but this sucked. Steak not rested and over cooked, small sides- chefs idea of a gluten free mushrooms was to take all of the love out of them and simply fry them in olive oil…gross. The waiter had little knowledge of food allergies and assumed that my needs were because I was trying to lose weight because he offered me desert and said “we have sugar free and fat free” Some sort of shaved vegetable on the plate smelt so bad and over powering I could smell it the entire meal. The waiter did not ask if the food was good, he seemed to have already convinced himself it was. Never felt so ripped off in my life. Morton’s or the capital grill offer a significantly better experience.

Came here for dinner whilst working in DC ! The place is elegant but it’s not the hype !! Service was average at its best ! My main problem was the table they gave us !! A half moon table adjoining the piano where a pianist was playing badly !! There was no space on or at the table !!!!! The food was good but not worth what they charge $48 for a pork chop ! $15 dollar for a baked potato and $ 18 dollar for asparagus!!! $150 for a lobster !!! But the absolute shocker was $20 dollar for a small bowl of ice cream !!! The experience was not enjoyable and would not return and I definitely would not recommend!!! There is far better !! This place is living off their reputation! Unfortunately the reputation is as dated as the pianists suit !! Sorry but I speak the truth ! Maybe try giving value for money ??
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service. Exceptional venue amazing food
This restaurant is elegant beautifully decorated and romantic. Live piano music, excellent service and very good food make this restaurant a good choice for a special night out. Valets parking, coat service, attention to detail. Very close to Kennedy Center make it a great choice for dinner before show. The prices are high. You get a lot of food, so much so you may need to share. Drinks are very good too.
Be the first to ReplyA lousy restaurant
Lousy - they serve a prime rib dry as a bone - used to give these guys five stars and now I won’t be back So sad to see a face get so lousy
Be the first to ReplyFine Dining all the Way
Fine dining all the way. From the warm and genuine welcome upon arrival. Through to dessert, The Prime Rib won’t disappoint. Celebrated my wife’s birthday which was recognised by Larry as he showed us to our table which we regarded as being the best in the restaurant. Larry was a great host though-out the evening. Our server for the evening was Tupou. The best server we’ve ever had. She looked after our every need, was very attentive without being being obtrusive by successfully interpreting our needs perfectly. We dined on multiple courses and enjoyed oysters, crab, escargot, salads, steak (of course) paired with some sides. All cooked, prepared and presented to perfection. There is also an extensive drinks menu as well. The night we dined there was also live music, a pianist and cellist (Reegan) that elevated the overall ambiance of the restaurant. The Prime Rib won’t disappoint.
Be the first to ReplyHuge delusion.
Huge delusion in The House of Prime rib. Unpolite waiters and a very bad service. Waiters didn’t listen to our requests and ordered what they wanted. English cut full of fat, uneatable. Very noisy restaurant. Very poor.

The Prime Rib is a Washington dining icon. Elegant with exceptional service. Ideal location for important business dinner or romantic evening. Valet parking.

We had been to each of the Prime Rib Restaurants after a lovely meal at the Philadelphia location. We ate at the Prime Rib in Baltimore (the original) and also had a pleasant time. A trip to DC meant we would stop at the DC Branch. The food is very good across the board at each restaurant, but service was quite different at the DC location. We are an interracial couple and were seated in the very back next to a serving station. We requested a new seat as every few minutes serving activity went on practically on top of us. We were moved a table away from the station. Within 5 minutes another - black - couple was seated in the space we had just asked to be move from. Is this where they seat the non -white folk? In the back of the back and next to service? Certainly, seemed that way from our experience. Usually "third time's the charm" NOT in this case.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the last old-time DC haunts
I always enjoy going here. It's probably the last place in DC that requires men to wear jackets. Great steaks, outstanding service, and free valet parking.
Be the first to ReplyElegant Dining Experience!
We had an outstanding dinner here with a business associate. The restaurant was very nicely appointed. They had an excellent pianist playing. The service was superb. My wife and I each had the filet mignon which was cooked to perfection. My associate had the prime rib which he said was great as well. The sides we ordered were all very good, as were the desserts. Top marks!

Everything was excellent.
The Crab Cake dinner portion was outstanding
The Prime Rib was outstanding !
It’s a steak house!
Love this place but remember, it is a steakhouse! Several other selections on the sea food side but when in Rome....
Started off with a well made “Manhattan” and a glass of “Malbec. Heirloom Tomato a Salad was a big hit and of course an order of the “Greenberg” potato skins (we have ours served with the meal not as an app). Ribeye entree and the signature “Prime. Rib”. Absolutely perfect. Finished off with a decadent hot fudge sundae. Didn’t need the extra calories but hey! Needless to say, service was impeccable. Top shelf.
Love the place and dine in the Baltimore location also.
Happy Leap Day Dinner
Gorgeous place with attentive staff and posh surroundings; tufted black leather, fresh flowers and ambient live music. I enjoyed a delicious beet salad, crab cakes and potato skins - a house specialty. My son raved over his steak. We both left happy 😊👍

If you like a good piece of steak this is your place. It was recommended by a friend. But I went there for a fish - the Dover sole, which is not easy to come by in Washington (much easier in London). It was cooked to perfection, melting in your mouth and not excessively expensive - simply divine.

The Prime Rib used to be the best steakhouse in Washington. It opened in 1976, one of three locations (Baltimore and Philadelphia the others). Now, what is still good about the restaurant? The food is still mostly good, especially the beef. The atmosphere remains top-notch. The piano-and-bass players provides wonderful background music. And it is still, perhaps the only one in town, a restaurant that requires men to wear a jacket, although no longer a tie. They'll provide one if you don't have it. This I like. My view is that if I'm paying $55 for a steak, I want some atmosphere and do not want to sit next to a guy in cut-offs and a polo shirt, drinking Bud out of a bottle. So, clearly not for everyone these days.
So, what has gone wrong? In October of last year the owner and founder of the Prime Rib passed away. In declining health for a number of years, he had allowed some decisions to be made that were not in the best interest of his restaurant. Of course, no restaurant lasts forever, and 44 years is a very long time in the restaurant business. The main criticism I have is the Wine List. I like wine. One of the reasons I have gone to the Prime Rib for decades is for the outstanding wine, formerly heavily California selections. A former winner, annually, of the Wine Spectators "best" award. For the past year, the Wine List has been virtually non-existent. The ones posted online are laughable. Nothing close to what they have to offer when you actually sit down. And now, when you do go in and attempt to order off the Wine List, it is full of vintages different from the ones on the List! And not just one wine. Most of them. It is truly insulting that this fine restaurant once had pretentions - deserved - to know something about fine wine and offer up superb selections. And I'm not talking about a $30 bottle here. This is wines that sell for $100, $200 per bottle, and more. You simply cannot be indifferent to the vintage of such wines and pass them off as "all the same." And I fear that this is just part of a rot that is seeping into the restaurant as the former owner's estate is settled and they look for a way forward. Sad. So, if you don't love fine wine, I'd say go ahead. You'll get a good meal in a place that still has wonderful ambiance. But, if you want good wine, caveat emptor. Used to be 5 stars, now only 3 stars.
What a V-Day dinner!
Best Valentine’s Day evening ever! This place is a classic Washington steak house. I love the old school dress code and the piano player provides background serenity. The table and chairs are so comfortable which is important for an upscale leisurely evening.
The food was fabulous too. The Prime Rib is the best in the city. Tonight they had a Dover Sole whole filet that was the best I have ever eaten. We love the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes as sides.
Our server Jim was so nice and provided wonderful service. He is definitely worth requesting. I love this Washington, DC, tradition!
Not the Same Quality
The Prime Rib,
For years, we loved the quality of the prime rib end cut in this well regarded Washington restaurant. However, we were very disappointed during restaurant week both by the quality of the food and the lack of the maître d’s interest in our experience.
A prime rib end-cut should be crispy or crusty on the outside, firm and succulent with flavor inside (generally end-cuts have a higher seasoning level). Ours was flabby and had no flavor. Even the “fresh” horseradish was limp as was the house salad (no longer the flavorful Caesar salad).
Because we strongly felt the quality was so out of step with this restaurant, we asked the waiter to mention it to the chef. She said she would. Later she returned to our table and asked if the maître d had come to speak to us. We replied he had not. She said he probably is too busy. However, we witnessed that he was not busy. The lack of interest in talking with us was a second huge disappointment that should never happen in a restaurant of The Prime Rib’s former stature.
Perhaps the problem with quality of the end-cut was that the restaurant uses a different cut of meat for restaurant week than on its standard menu. At least this is what we were told when we initially ordered the end-cut. The waiter saying she was not sure an end-cut would be available since the cut of meat for restaurant week is different from the standard meat on the menu!!!
Unfortunately, we will not return to the Prime Rib and risk another disappointment.
A Tradition of Excellence
Went to The Prime Rib for the first time in 1988 and was wowed. Have been back several times since, including last weekend, and it still has the shine. Fabulous service and delicious cuts of meat.
