Perfect place for a sunset cocktail!
What a gorgeous place for a sunset cocktail on a beautiful evening! We did not eat at the restaurant here. Just spent an hour on the Adirondack chairs sipping cocktails, and watching the sunset. There is an outdoor bar or you can walk over to The Lawn Restaurant’s bar and grab a cocktail. Plenty of Adirondack chairs or you can just sit on the grass. Definitely take an Uber here from your hotel because it’s a little tricky to find and after a few cocktails it’s probably the smart and safe thing to do.
Be the first to ReplyStunning location to sip a cocktail on the lawn
Absolutely stunning location, huge lawn overlooking the ocean, with sailboats. Ordered some high-quality, reasonably priced cocktails at the bar stand on the lawn, and was lucky to find a couple open Adirondack chairs. This is the life. Sipping cocktails on the lawn, enjoying the gorgeous view; so peaceful and romantic. Totally recommend. They also have a restaurant w/ indoor and outdoor seating, but we just had lunch in town, so just enjoyed our drinks with a view.
Be the first to ReplyI’ll be dreaming of this evening for a while
One of the most special evenings with my husband. We didn’t want the dinner to end. The coastal New England setting and views of sailboats and lighthouses alone was just spectacular but the food was also a big part of the delight. Our farm salad was fresh with seasonally grown vegetables and my halibut & scallops in a light bouillabaisse broth was savory. My husband ordered lobster roll and said he had better elsewhere but let that not be a deterrent; he cleaned his plate ! Service was perfect. Hope we can do it all over again very soon.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant exceeded my expectations.
This restaurant exceeded my expectations. The setting and views are spectacular, the service prompt and friendly, and the food was delicious. We noticed the freshness and good quality of the ingredients. Also enjoyed relaxing a bit in the lawn chairs after our meal.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed by new white chairs (does feel like a chain hotel now)
Disappointed by white, plastic chairs. The old ones were so much prettier! Agree with the last comment.
Be the first to ReplyUgly new chairs
Really ugly new chairs. Look like you're in a chain hotel. Plasticky white chairs. Miss the wooden, nautical ones they used to have. Horrible design choice.
Be the first to ReplyA True Delight!
Everything at Lawn was exceptional --- from the decor, to the food, to the service. Nothing was routine. No one faltered. From reception, to hostess, to waitstaff, everyone was kind, courteous and professional. Presentation deserves an "A." Chef appeared to prepare all dishes to order. Options were creative and plentiful. Food was fresh and delicious. A true delight! Cannot wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyNice place for a cocktail
This is so much fun. We had lunch here but enjoyed drinks on the Lawn while we waited for a table. The Lawn is a great place to enjoy a cocktail and unwind. The food was enjoyable even thought it was a little pricey for lunch.
Be the first to ReplyWorth the visit
Outstanding view, food & service. Only drawback to our visit was that it was on a very windy day. Clam soup was very good, so were the fried green tomatoes.
Be the first to ReplyWouldn’t be summer without Castle Hill Inn
“The Lawn” at Castle Hill Inn is a must go place for me every summer. The structure is an 1870’s clapboard Victorian mansion, set on the water with huge grounds. An outdoor drink with the view at sunset is one of my pleasures in life! It is fabulous beyond words; view of the water, sailboats and bridge. One can sit on the terrace with tables and umbrellas, or at The Lawn, with comfy Adirondack chairs to gaze and relax at the water, or at the bar. You can be served food at any of these spots. RESERVATIONS: In season, a must if you wish to dine on the terrace or the Adirondack chairs. If not, eating at the bar is great too, with the same entrancing view. SERVICE: Very good. This is a Newport Group Restaurant which are employee owned. I think the staff give better service and actually care about your experience. FOOD: also very good. I have always enjoyed everything I have ever eaten there.. It is casual fare: lobster rolls, sandwiches, salads etc. VALUE: Look at the online menu, it is slightly pricey, but a priceless experience. PARKING: valet in season, otherwise they have adequate parking. Tip: Make your reservation as far in advance as possible, a week or even weeks before you plan to visit. There is competition in season for those views! If you plan, for example, to visit the Newport Mansions on a certain day, make a reservation now! Tip: Without a reservation in season at peak times, eat at the bar. Tip: Their menu is online Tip: Buy gift cards on sale when they are offered seasonally, like Labor Day, Christmas etc. It will save you about 20%.
Be the first to ReplyLovely Family Evening at Castle Hill
We had the most wonderful evening at Castle Hill Inn. We had a reservation but arrived a little bit early to explore a bit. We walked down their lighthouse and our kids loved that! It’s a short walk with a mowed path. It was easy and the path is lined with blackberry bushes which my six year old enjoyed, very much! Once we checked in with the hostess we found a pair of Adirondack chairs and my husband got us drinks and we just took in the view while our kids played in the grass. It was picturesque and wonderful. We had about a 15 minute wait and then were seated on the upper level of the restaurant and had the most stunning views of the water. Okay, the food. 10/10. My entire family loved it all. We started with their clam chowder, just got a cup to taste and my 6 year old ended up finishing it off- he loved it so much. It was very good, some of the best I’ve had. Then we ordered the cornbread. It was incredible. We are southern and we know cornbread, my 11 year old who loves to bake, was like “we need the recipe for this”. I ordered the swordfish and it was wonderful, my husband had the Cajun redfish and my 11 year old had the kids redfish. The 6 year old was pretty full after his clam chowder so he just snacked off of our plates. We finished with the brownie for dessert, I really wanted to blonde but we let the kids pick as it was our last night on vacation. The brownie was good, but super rich! Husband and I had a few bites and the boys really finished it off. The only thing I wish I’d known, that really had nothing to do with Castle Hill was how chilly it got as the sun went down. Bring a sweater! We were chilly the last half of dinner. After we finished eating, the boys got up and played on the lawn while my husband and I sat and enjoyed the view a little longer and finished our drinks. Will happily bring our family back here again. We’ll bring sweaters next time :)
Be the first to ReplyLong awaited Disappointment
Everyone told me I had to sit in an Adirondack chair, get a drink and eat here. Maybe in the off season when things are cool, calm and collected but not now. The parking lot was jammed. They couldn’t find my car, even with the ticket. Not a lawn chair to be had. The service was better than the food. My Caesar salad was as expensive as it was tasteless. The lobster roll was skinny as a Slim Jim. Yes, the ride out there was fun and the view great, but that was about it. No Gilded Age grace or elegance. Maybe some other time.
Be the first to ReplyGood food with a magnificent view
A must do when you are in Newport. It's located on the iconic Ocean Drive. The food was just good, but the location is phenomenal. Gorgeous views. Make sure you make reservations 2 weeks in advance. It's very popular. You can either eat a meal or just grab a drink and sit in an lawn chair and watch the boats. A must do.

The patio is incredible & the views are to die for. We say there admiring the sail boats as we sipped our tasty cocktails and ate our lunch. I got the spring salad topped with lobster salad and the marinated watermelon. So so so so good!! Make sure you include time to sit in the Adirondack chairs after (or before) you dine.
Be the first to ReplyMagical afternoon
We were having guests from out of town who had never been to Rhode Island. We decided to give them the signature Newport experience–lunch at Castle Hill, preferably outside, and a tour of the Breakers. The weather was incredibly beautiful, and our entire day was perfect. We had lobster rolls all around (with a generous amount of big chunks of lobster) preceded by a variety of appetizers: shrimp cocktail, chowder, and the shrimp and crab dip. Everything was absolutely delicious. Of course, the meal was pricey, but I consider the experience well worth it. The meal simply could not have been better. BTW, reservations through open table worked perfectly as well, and we were given one of the best tables with stunning view.
Be the first to ReplyStunning views for lunch
My husband and I had a wonderful lunch experience here recently. We did not have reservations, so we sat at the terrace bar, which was just as lovely. The lobster roll and the burger were both excellent, I loved that the lobster roll didn’t have mayo but used crème fraîche instead. The view is absolutely stunning, and although it’s pricey, it was well worth it. Brian at the bar was great as our server and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Treat yourself if you’re in the area!
Be the first to ReplyThe setting is worth the trip.
Had lunch outside on a gorgeous day. The setting is stunning. The valet service very quick ,the service and greeting from the hostess was lovely.
The only misstep was a shrimp in the delicious shrimp cocktail wasn’t deveined which was pretty off putting. It was quickly remedied but surprised it would leave the kitchen.
The kale salad was huge and the falafel wrap interesting.
Service from Nicole (she was new) was great.
A must visit if just for a drink.
Excellent Dinner!!!!!
This place is first rate from the minute you drive in. The staff, the service, the food.....all are excellent. The views and scenery are classic and spectacular!!! We go to a lot of nice places. This was exceptional. This was our best meal in Newport...met all expectations. The server was a young kid who was at Northeastern. Great kid!! The hostesses were terrific!!!
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful views and great food and service
Just about every table was ordering the lobster roll. It is as advertised really excellent. Our server Liddy was very helpful, and even though they were very busy she did a wonderful job. The view is one of the best with plenty of sailing boats going by. Good choice of local craft beer too.

Great place for afternoon lunch
A bit on pricey side but chowder is delicious and nice selection of ciders
Beautiful Place - Bad Food
Drove two hours to go to lunch with friends. Reservations were made, we were seated in the bar, actually, at the bar and our view was that of a taped tope paper covering the bar, surrounded by plastic on the windows, hindering the beautiful view. The menu was limited, expensive and they were a bit short staffed, that is the only reason I can think of that it took 35 minutes to take our lunch order. When the food finally came out, the food smelled bad. The meat was spoiled. The fries were dark and greasy, well, mine were. My friends fries looked crispy, not burnt. My fries looked like they had been in the fryer, in the bottom of the basket for a while, or a long time and in little pieces, bits, if you will. My meat was spoiled to the point I could smell it as the server put the food in front of me before it hit the bar. I took a bite and knew it was bad. I asked my friend how her food was, it too was spoiled. She actually spit out her food when she tried it. It had a horrilbe smell to it. The server was quick to take the plates away and a manager came to the bar and apologized, asked if we wanted something else. She did not want us to be hungry. It took so long for the original order to come out, we didn't want to chance it. My friend got a dessert, I got another order of fries. Bad choice on my part, again. They came out burnt and greasy just like the first batch. The dessert, I'm told, was delicious. The overall visit was not good. We played musical chairs as well so we each got a chance to chat. Being seated at the bar, instead of outside or at a table, we were stretched out at the bar. We were there a lot longer than we expected and had bad meals. We left and ate when we got back to New Hampshire. Beautiful sight for sure, the boats were pleasant to look at, However, questionable food and service. The server and manager were very friendly, but the chef should have been able to smell bad food as it was cooking. I smelled it before the plate was put in front of me. I will not go back again. I feel like it was a waste of 4.5 hours of driving. Very disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect Lunch for an Anniversary Weekend Getaway
We really lucked out being able to get a table outside at The Lawn. It was sunny and the views of the water were spectacular. Our server was great- he even took a few photos of us on the lawn after we finished lunch. I got the burger- delicious. The fries were a bit greasy but tasty. My husband ordered the lobster roll and it was packed with lobster! It was a lovely relaxing way to spend a portion of our afternoon. We would certainly return!
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Location But Medíocre Experience
Upon arrival for our lunch reservation, we were greeted by a rude valet, who resented that we wanted to self park (in order to change our footwear after an active morning in Newport). The other staff we encountered were gracious and hospitable. The sangria was disappointing, but another cocktail was just fine. Our salad entree was screwed up twice. First it came out with the wrong cheese, and the second time there was no dressing. We were too hungry by that point, and just ate it as it was. The lobster salad was fresh and delicious. The lobster roll was served with lettuce, after we were assured that there would be no lettuce. Once again, rather than returning it, the member of our party with the allergy, picked off the shredded lettuce. The setting on Narragansett Bay was spectacular. However, the property itself looked run down.
