The Kitchin Edinburgh Reviews
Amazing food and service
Service was great from the moment we arrived. We had a cocktail in the bar area which was served with a small canapΓ©. In the dining room we ate off the a la carte menu. Between courses we were served an amuse-bouche which we didnβt expect. The waiter explained in detail on how each course was cooked. The choice was good and every course tasted amazing. I went for the Scallop to start, then the duck and chocolate mousse selection to finish. The prices are quite steep but we knew we were going to a high end Michelin restaurant so was expecting this and the quality of food was very good. It was a special treat. Not somewhere I could go every week (as much as Iβd like too).
This is the the bar.
This is this should be the standard all 1 Michelin in scotland should be putting out 1st class. Razor clams amazing Salmon main amazing Buckthorn dessert everything I want in a pudding servic and wine all great. An expensive treat but we deffo got what we paid for and left happy.
A real treat
A well regarded restaurant in the popular and vibrant Leith district, it appears suitably plush and upmarket, but all the staff were pleasant and friendly and it wasnβt at all formal or stuffy. We were offered drinks whilst we perused the menu, which had three different options β a la carte, or two βsurpriseβ tasting menus. Generally Iβd be quite happy with a surprise tasting menu, but in this case it was difficult to choose between the two since they were both the same number of courses with the only discernible difference being that one used more premium ingredients. Considering there was a Β£50 price difference between each, we wanted a bit more detail than that, but fortunately this was not an issue and you could peruse the actual menu if you so wished, which was just as well really as we preferred the sound of the cheaper one! Everything we had was really very good, and itβs difficult to pick out any highlights. The beetroot consommΓ© to start could perhaps have done with some actual pieces of beetroot in it, the flavour from the liquid didnβt seem very pronounced and some of the lamb fillet was a little chewy, but other than that it was all excellent. The scallops with a white wine, Vermouth and herb sauce were certainly very good, and a generous portion, and the barbequed John Dory was also very good indeed. A βMillionaireβsβ caramel mouse to finish was a suitably decadent end to the meal, and the accompanying wine flight washed it all down very nicely. The wine flight included a glass of champagne to start, and the meal included a hot drink at the end (the menu listed tea or coffee, but they happily made me a chocolate!) although there was only one petit fours included which was a bit of a shame. Surely that should be a petit four? Overall though, very, very good and highly recommended.
The Rockpool Revived.
After many years the revitalised "Rockpool" is again a wonderful starter tasting of a shellfish selection in a pool of shellfish consomme. It is worth a visit for this alone. The Kitchin cooking continues to be the epitome of extracting the optimum taste from many of the less popular ingredients and the current menus have two which we tried. I love the Hogget. I think of it as lamb with attitude. The beauty of lamb with the enhanced flavours of the older animal. My wife ordered the Beef Shin. Often it is viewed as a brilliant flavour but only suitable for Beef consomme. Here all the rich taste of the beef is preserved whilst it is presented with a delicate texture. Both Mains are fine examples of creating fine dining courses from less known ingredients. There are no requirements here for the overwhelming sauces which so often emasculate the principal componet of many dishes elsewhere. All supported by a continuing excellence of service in a friendly, amusing and fun way.
Anniversary Meal
Always visit this restaurant every time we are in Leith and this is the first time I have left a review..What can you say about this fantastic restaurant...From the minute you arrive at this restaurant you are treated like royalty..The food is absolutely amazing and the wine list is extensive and full of amazing wines and Champagne..If you are very lucky the main man Tom Kitchin will be working there and fair play to him he comes out and greets everyone of the diners asking them how they are and how they are enjoying the food and he has no problem having a photo taking with you as well..If you have a special birthday or anniversary or any special event then this is the place for you..Had a fantastic pearl anniversary celebration here and many many thanks to Tom and his fantastic staff making it sooo memorable for the wife and i
Not recommended
Unfortunately do not recommend. The restaurant is very large and appears relatively classy, but the attitude of the staff markedly detracts from this. We went as a young couple. We could afford to pay for it, but had saved up, expecting it to be an incredible experience. It was incredible, but for the wrong reasons. The staff were very cold and seemed quite unwelcoming. We were told our choice of wine wasn't correct for the food. The food itself was pretty terrible. Would not recommend. Try Martin Wishart - that was incredible!
Vegetarian lunch
We wanted to love this restaurant, my husband and I visited with a voucher my mum had bought us, as she was a huge Tom Kitchin fan and adored her visit here. Unfortunately, from almost the outset, I felt like I was in the childhood story, "The Emperor's new clothes". Whether it was due to a quiet Tuesday 2pm lunch seating, the fact we are both vegetarian or that our hopes were high although our expectations weren't, the experience was among the poorest of us eating out. We have never eaten in a Michelin starred restaurant and indeed are often disappointed by vegetarian offerings compared to our creations at home that to eat out isn't common for us and perhaps we cannot offer the opinion and insight of others reviews of The Kitchin. But at the least we expect well seasoned, tasty food anywhere and here we were expecting to discover new techniques, innovative flavours and perfect presentation. None of this happened, the menu seemed tired, uninspired and bored, couldn't feel or taste any passion for cooking, even the descriptions given by the waiting staff were delivered as if rehearsed and monotone, perhaps they were embarrassed. The bread made elsewhere was good and the wine enjoyable, although having been lucky enough to stay in Valpolicella area last year, we had tasted and bought very similar quality wine from a winemaker, for around 15 euros so the markup to seventy pounds seemed steep. Even with the staff, we didn't get the buzz that others have experienced and felt that once we failed to deliver on effusive praise they lost interest or again due to the partially filled dining room and the evening service looming they were just ready for a break. When I was unable to eat my main as it was oversalted, they did whisk it away and had it remade, but too soon for me to explain that it was the ricotta filling, not the butter dressing, I felt as if there was a judgement on me rather than an interest in how the dish could be improved. Overall, our experience was flat and increasingly disappointing so that by the end we were quite annoyed and irritated and that was before the Β£210 bill.
An amazing restaurant
What an amazing restaurant. We have been here several times and it never fails to impress with the quality of the food and the attentiveness of the staff. Even though there was an issue with food coming out late, the staff covered the situation very well. We had a lovely meal from the fixed three course menu. Very highly recommended
I expected more !
We dined here to celebrate my wife's birthday We had been trying for some time to get booked but had been unsuccessful The service seemed to be a bit unorganised with the service waiter hovering around the waiting station on the arrival of other staff to place food down. This happened on almost every course We tried the surprise tasting menu, and it was nice, we felt a couple of the courses were a bit over seasoned, not what was expected The staff were very pleasant and there was lots of staff on duty As you would expect, the restaurant was busy for a Tuesday night After paying the bill and leaving, I found it strange that not one server thanked us as we were leaving the table and we were very generous with our gratuity
Exceptional experience
I've been wanting to visit here since seeing on "Remarkably places to eat! It was just a wonderful experience. We had the surprise tasting course. It was without doubt some of the most wonderful food we've eaten. Tom coming out from the kitchen to chat to his customers. Was a lovely touch. And actually presenting us with our rock pool course. Explaining it beautifull made our day. The staff are attentive and pleasant. With a shout out to lovely head waiter Franco . All in all , it may be expensive. Its clear the love and time being put in to every course. Treat yourself and visit. Thank you Tom. We will be back. Outstanding x
Special food experience
If you want a treat, then treat yourself here. The food is sublime and the service is incredible. It's a special occasion place but it's one of the best food experiences you can have
Fine dining in Leith
We went with my parents for an anniversary treat. A very special experience! The food was amazing and wine pairings were fantastic & very well chosen. My personal favourite dish was the scallops cooked inside the shell and sealed with pastry. Delicious! We got the tram from the city centre which took 20 minutes max and a short walk from the tram stop. Really easy to get there. Make sure to include this on your itinerary if you are a foodie exploring Edinburgh!
A memorable culinary adventure.
Located in the Port of Leith, this fine dining restaurant offers the best of Scottish cuisine - a delectable selection of innovative attractively presented dishes. Twelve of us relished the set lunch options, and reasonable priced highly quaffable wines or beers. Service is impeccable.
Excellent experience
Both myself and my partner could not fault our experience. The service was excellent, professional, and engaging. The food was outstanding well executed and packed full of interest and flavour a real showcase of great produce. We opted for the exclusive wine pairing to go with the tasting menu and we enjoyed what was served some really lovely pairings. Really enjoyed the experience and will return.
Culinary excellence and hospitality at the highest level
Superb in every way. We enjoyed a wonderful evening experiencing an array of Scottish produce. The team make you feel so relaxed and we could not fault anything. We will most certainly return!
Very Average
Weve dined here several times over the years and its either excellent or very average and on this occasion it was sadly the latter. The canape was really odd - it was a large ball of what felt like cold mashed potato, the onion and cheese topping didnt really come through - an unpleasant mouthful, also quite big which probably didnt help. The beetroot to follow was okay but just pickled beetroot in beetroot juice, simple but hard to eat. Starters - we had an issue with the scallops being under / raw which to be fair they dealt with quickly and fairly, the sweetbreads and langoustine were very good. Mains of Lamb and venison were tasty but nothing out the ordinary, some parts of the dishes were cold - the venison rump and the aubergine which just showed a lack of attention to detail. The rhubarb pre desert was probably the tastiest dish of the night as the deserts were espresso mouse which sounded great but only had the faintest taste of coffee, the doughnuts were the best thing on that one and the souffle had a scrambled egg consistency and was a disappointment. Hard to really pick out something which was great or memorable, even the Buckthorn cocktail was bland and didnt taste of having any alcohol in it. Lots of staff running around, lots of decanting sauces at the table, carving the lamb at the table for show but it all felt a bit style over substance. Over all a bit of a let down.
They don't use yelp in Scotland as much as we do in the US.
I wanted to leave this review anyway because this was one of the 10 best meals I have had in my life. I also attempted to Yelp as we were planning our trip. I saw this place on Men in Kilts and I had to take my Mom. Reservations are required and they ask for a credit card hold. The chef here is very talented and has the art of balancing a meal mastered. If you have the opportunity to travel to Edinburgh you must not miss this place. If I had to name the ambiance of this place it would be Cozy Elegant. Let the wine pairing happen! You will not be disappointed. The scallop appetizer is a must!
Well what an amazing experience from start to finish. Service was 100% & food outstanding.
Amazing atmosphere & amazing food, service was 100%. Would love to go back again one day. Was lovely to spend a special birthday there.
Delicious! Where to start? Everything was outstanding.
The Smoke cocktail was perfectly balanced, showcasing the peaty flavor of the Ardbeg Whisky. The Scallops might have been our favorite course of the tasting menu - although everything was memorable. The small printed map of Scotland with the source of every ingredient reinforced the farm to table orientation. The service was attentive and helpful.
We recently had the pleasure of dining at The Kitchin in
We recently had the pleasure of dining at The Kitchin in Edinburgh. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we felt ensconced in the atmosphere and genuine hospitality the restaurant provided. It was apparent that great care had been taken to create a place that was pleasing and comfortable as the interior dΓ©cor was cozy and intimate. The Surprise Tasting Menu was diverse and the dishes were crafted with the utmost skill and creativity. Each of the seven courses that we indulged in was a true masterpiece (including the vegetarian versions) because the favors were exquisite and the presentation of each dish was a work of art. The staff was very knowledgeable in describing each dish and you can taste the thoughtfulness and care in every delicious bite. We were very pleased that we decided to also include the wine pairing because we enjoyed learning about each and they complimented each dishes perfectly. The only glitch was that the optional cheese course took a lot longer to be served than the previous courses and then the rest of the courses took longer than usual, as well as receiving our bill at the end, and the dinner service ended up taking 5 hours. Regardless, we had an exceptional meal that we thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget.
This Scottish Michelin star restaurant owned by Tom Kitchin
This Scottish Michelin star restaurant owned by Tom Kitchin of Edinburgh, did not disappoint! The service was impeccable, the food clean and delicious in a contemporary, relaxed ambiance. We arrived for our lunch reservation and were warmly welcomed and immediately seated. Our server greeted us with a daily menu, recommended favorite dishes complete with cocktails/wine pairings. The baked scallops were presented in a scalloped shell and served steaming hot in a creamy white wine sauce. The scallops were fresh, large and tender without a trace of sand/grit. That being said-- you were tempted to throw your head back, and drink the very last drop of gourmet cream sauce straight from the shell! The cheese tray offered an array of tasty morsels with a depth of flavor complimentary to our meals. Ahh-- and the desserts were lovely! They were pretty and delicate... leaving us with 'sweet' summer memories! I'm happy to share, the food and experience were both so good, I simply forgot to take photographs until dessert arrived! The expertise of the chefs, blended with the personable professionalism of the front of the house, made our dinning experience five star. When the chef visited our table to inquire if we enjoyed our courses... we knew we would visit again! Thank you...
A fantastic lunch from nature to table.
The food and service were both wonderful. We started with champagne and light appetizers and then moved effortlessly through the meal. We enjoyed scallops, grouse and venison each dish was fantastic Ly prepared and cooked to perfection. We finished with a lovely soufflΓ©. Definitely a place to savor and enjoy one's meal with friends wine and wonderful food!
Absolutely fantastic.
We were fortunate to get a table for 4 for lunch. From entry to the restaurant to the walk back along the water of Leith it was a great experience. The physical space was lovely with the natural wood elements on the walls and the tartan backed booths. The service was professional and kind. We ordered the fixed menu with wine pairing. I enjoyed the ravioli, beef and lemon soufflΓ© while our party similarly enjoyed the mussels, venison and strawberry dessert. The wine pairings were delicious. Tom Kitchin was in the restaurant and made the rounds through the dining room. Which was the cherry on top of the experience. Highly recommend.
Amazing-went for lunch while in Edinburgh for my bday.
I opted not to go with the tasting menu which, for me, was a good choice given how many dishes I like to try. The attentive care was stellar, especially after two days of flying and I also recommend checking out the wine bar within the resto. Make it a stop with in Edinburgh. Comforting room by the water.
Get to know the best food Scotland has to offer
Wow, great life experience. I feel like I know and understand Scotland more by sampling the great food here. Met the great chef Tom kitchin too. Stunning food, great staff and a real experience. Had the premier tasting menu, which included hand dived scallops, wagyu beef, turbot, black truffle, caviar, all given the care they deserved by a great chef who know the importance of great ingredients and letting them shine. Top marks.
Outstanding
Our daughter who had recently moved to Edinburgh chose The Kitchen for the last night's dinner during our recent visit. From the time we walked through the front door I knew we were in for a treat. We were seated at a very nice corner booth/table and the experience began. The service was nothing short of exceptional and the sommelier chose two wines which were wonderful and not through the roof expensive. As each of the four of us took the first bites of our appetizers, and then mains we all looked at each other and said "You have got to try this". Simply amazing. We finished our evening in the scotch bar and again the sommelier picked single malts to our specific tastings. The Kitchen deserves it's Michelin star for sure. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Excellent from beginning to end
We had the set lunch menu and everything was so beautiful and completely delicious. The appetiser and amuse bouche were perfect. Loved the homemade crusty bread & butter. Everything on the plates reflected the skills of the chefs, quality of the produce and was so well presented by all restaurant staff. A real treat from all the family to celebrate mumβs 90th birthday. Canβt wait to go back π
Top Tasting Menu
We had a fantastic experience at The Kitchen. Weβve been lucky enough to eat at some fantastic eateries in Edinburgh but none have topped The Kitchen for its food and atmosphere. On arrival we were sat close to the kitchen so we could see the chefs at work, which in itself was an experience. The menu is exactly as it says on the tin. Quality cuisine, using excellent local produce! As we were looking at the menu, none other than the propreitor stopped by to say hello! I was a tad in awe, and for one of the few times in my life genuinely stuck for words. It was a great little touch to meet him and certainly made our trip even more memorable. We opted for the tasting menu and paired wines. We also shared the wine course with the tawny port. Id never had chilled port before but it was well worth trying! The food itself was some of the best fayre weve ever had and the service and knowledge of the staff was second to none. The setting was cozy, casual and really helped us to relax and just enjoy the food and our company. Cant say much more!! If you get the chance to goβ¦β¦GO!
Taster menu experience
Well, where to start. My Son & daughter-in-law said I had to experience this, their treat. From the minute we walked through the door we felt right at home. The staff were so welcoming and Tom was there to greet us. Every course was delicious! I couldnβt pick a favourite as I loved them all. I have to mention the scallops, no words to describe the flavours, mouthwatering, exquisite, scrumptious, so fresh, you could almost taste the sea. Tom came after this course to ask if we enjoyed it, lovely touch. He is so busy but makes the time to speak to all his guests. Every course is explained in detail and if you have the wine pairing, the Sommelier, who has a wealth of knowledge, serves your wine and gives you all the background. There is no rush, we were there for 3 hours. Already planning my next visit and will definitely visit his other restaurants,
25th wedding anniversary
We visited the kitchen Thursday Tom was there & came out and chatted with Everyone, The food an the service was superb. Me & my wife was invited to go in the kitchen To see everyone at work, It was lovely to see a well oiled machine at work. A lovely experience from start to finish
Wow what a fantastic place
Visited the Kitchin on 23rd February 23 for a lunch set menu for a 40th present by my wife and we have been on 4 occasions and each time we have never had a bad experience. Food is amazing, the staff are very knowledgeable and attention to detail is outstanding! We will visit again in the future I would recommend this place anyone
Top-end food restaurant experience all round
Let's be clear about this: a tasting menu for two, complete with wine flight, isn't really in our price range, but this was a very special present for a couple of big birthdays. So the food, wine, and general experience had to be very good indeed. It lived up to all expectations. The food was great from the starting canapΓ© to the finishing chocolate tarte β the five "proper" courses being a sort of scallop & fruit salad; pork cheeks and mushroom veloutΓ©; cod with clams and cauliflower; venison and other stuff; and the tarte. A special shout-out also for the pre-dessert, a rhubarb-based panna cotta. Of course the menu was a surprise, as were the wines. But meals out are often more defined by the front-of-house experience, and we really enjoyed the relaxed service, which found the right balance between being overbearing and neglectful. Someone always seemed to know exactly when to approach. Steve, the mΓ’itre d' spoke to us for quite a while at the end. He seems to have a good team, but in particular we had lovely service both from Veronika and Giovanni. The wines were presented with considerable panache, although diners should be warned in advance that you won't be asked how much you already know about the wines in question: it's just part of the cabaret. We should add that Tom Kitchin himself did appear at our table at the start to wish us a pleasant experience, so he was present. Also, at the table next to us, a group of four were having the premium tasting menu at Β£180 plus wine flight. They wouldn't get any change from Β£1000. This is serious stuff, so just enjoy it if you have the good fortune to be able to. It's difficult to assess in "value-for-money" terms because anything at that level... however, as a "bucket-list" experience, The Kitchin is a must-do.
Great service . Mixed feelings about the food .
Visited Wednesday 15th . Staff were excellent . Starters and mains were faultless and delicious. We had the Coffee dessert and what was supposed to be a quince soufflΓ©. Firstly , I could not taste any quince and mentioned to my wife that all I could taste was egg . Then when I got to the bottom, the small pieces looked and tasted more like stewed apple . My wifeβs coffee dessert was just a little strange in presentation , coming on separate plates and lacked anything wow about it . Now Iβm not claiming to be a food expert , but I do think that when you pay Β£300 for a meal , it should blow your socks off . A slightly underwhelming end to an otherwise excellent meal .
Experience was special
Surprise taster menu was delicious and truly a memorable experience. Scallop cooked in pastry sealed shell was my favourite but John Dory, carrot and buckthorn veloute, warm chocolate tart with florentine were also a taste worth sampling.
Exceptional food as you would expect made even better by
Exceptional food as you would expect made even better by the amazingly knowledgeable and professional staff in particular Evan who has a great career ahead of him.Superb all round experience which I would encourage everyone to experience.
Food 5/5Service 1/5Ambiance 4/5Let me just start by saying
Food 5/5Service 1/5Ambiance 4/5Let me just start by saying the food here is incredible! We ordered one prestige menu and one standard menu to try food from both. The prestige menu food was definitely worth the extra cost with things like caviar and wagyu beef in the courses. Both menus tasted completely different from each other but equally delicious. The food was Michelin star quality food but the service was not.The service is where our meal completely fell flat. I have eaten at many Michelin starred or bib gourmand rated restaurants and they all aim for around 3-3:30 hour service time. We had a table of 4 and it took us just a few minutes shy of 5 hours for our meal. We would be sitting at an empty table 30 minutes in between courses before our next course arrived. My glass of water was only filled twice and remained empty almost the entire night - I had to ask for it to be filled. We saw almost every other table the the restaurant get seated get their food and leave before we were done. I have never encountered such a slow service before, it was definitely not worthy of a Michelin star service level. We didn't know who our waiter was because we had 4 different people wait on us throughout the night as if we weren't assigned a waiter like every other table was. I loved the food but with such a terrible service experience I cannot recommend this restaurant as there is a certain level of service quality expected with a Michelin star that was not delivered on for our group.
This was a big splurge but I'm so glad we did it! I saw it
This was a big splurge but I'm so glad we did it! I saw it on the show, Men in Kilts. We all had the Surprise tasting menu with wine pairing. My favorite dish was the scallops served in the shell sealed with delicious puff pastry. Everything else was delicious too! Service was excellent. Shout out to Zoey, Steve, Quentin and Evan! Be aware though. This is a very long dinner. It was 4 hours. We had 8pm reservations and left at 12am. I would have been ok with a 3 hr. Max.
Best meal I've ever had .
.. Bar none!! Texture, fresh ingredients, presentation, creativity, taste, service, wine list... value for what you get. We ordered the Classic and Premium tasting menu. I actually think the Classic was better. I didn't think having the lobster and the wagyu beef made the difference, though they were delicious!! The sauces were ridiculously complex, beautiful, colorful and soooo good!! Bravo to the staff, Tom Kitchin and the fresh ingredients that Scotland provided... AMAZING meal. I can't find ANY faults... and I am picky. Food plus wine and gratuity was 500$ for 2. Quite worth the trip!!
Fantastic food, top notch staff, superb chief! Well worth
