Let's be clear about this: a tasting menu for two, complete with wine flight, isn't really in our price range, but this was a very special present for a couple of big birthdays. So the food, wine, and general experience had to be very good indeed. It lived up to all expectations. The food was great from the starting canapé to the finishing chocolate tarte – the five "proper" courses being a sort of scallop & fruit salad; pork cheeks and mushroom velouté; cod with clams and cauliflower; venison and other stuff; and the tarte. A special shout-out also for the pre-dessert, a rhubarb-based panna cotta. Of course the menu was a surprise, as were the wines. But meals out are often more defined by the front-of-house experience, and we really enjoyed the relaxed service, which found the right balance between being overbearing and neglectful. Someone always seemed to know exactly when to approach. Steve, the mâitre d' spoke to us for quite a while at the end. He seems to have a good team, but in particular we had lovely service both from Veronika and Giovanni. The wines were presented with considerable panache, although diners should be warned in advance that you won't be asked how much you already know about the wines in question: it's just part of the cabaret. We should add that Tom Kitchin himself did appear at our table at the start to wish us a pleasant experience, so he was present. Also, at the table next to us, a group of four were having the premium tasting menu at £180 plus wine flight. They wouldn't get any change from £1000. This is serious stuff, so just enjoy it if you have the good fortune to be able to. It's difficult to assess in "value-for-money" terms because anything at that level... however, as a "bucket-list" experience, The Kitchin is a must-do.
