My sister and I visited The Gundis to celebrate a special occasion. Our reservation was on a Saturday morning and the restaurant was very busy, but the ambiance was comfortable and service was attentive. We shared the Kurdish breakfast for two and it was exceptional. We loved the variety and the balance between freshness and richness. We left full and satisfied. I would highly recommend and we will definitely be back!

Visited The Gundis tonight for a quick dinner and I was so pleasantly surprised! I've heard their brunch is incredible, and their dinner was too. Started with the hummus + bread (yum!) and ordered the stuffed chicken for my entree. The chicken may be one of my favorite dishes in the city now. Stuffed with spinach and goat cheese and topped with a Kurdish cream sauce, what's not to love! Cozy atmosphere and quick, friendly service. Highly recommend!

I didn't even know what Kurdish cuisine was but now I'm a huge fan! The lamb shank was one of the best lamb shanks I've had in the states. (The Best was in Greece.) The meat just fell right off the bone. I could've used a butter knife or just my fork! It was so flavorful and juicy, and the rosemary sauce was perfectly fragrant without being overpowering. The bed of mashed potatoes were nice and creamy, and a perfect match to the delicious lamb! My partner had the stuffed chicken with goat cheese and spinach which was also lovely. We rarely order chicken when we go out bc it tends to be dry but the chicken at Gundis was perfectly juicy and flavorful. The two starters we had were grilled halloumi cheese and the baba ganoush. Both were tasty but we were definitely blown away by our mains! Service was on point and the restaurant had a warm and welcoming vibe, like we were at a big family get-together. This is one of our new faves and we're sure to be back for more lamb!!

One of my favorite places I've ever dined at, it was perfect the food. It felt like a little too much food at times but god it was so good. Service was kind and the ambiance was perfect for that of a brunch restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyReally cute spot with lots of natural light.
The kurdish breakfast for 2 was a good value and the soujouk scramble was so flavorful and delicious. The accompaniments were just okay but it was lots of fun to try everything. They did ask us to leave our table as soon as we were done paying which was a bummer, as I was there with friends that I hadn't seen in a while and had to cut our visit short.

Unique and yummy food, lots of vegetarian and vegan options, service was excellent even as we inadvertently held up the restaurant closing as we lost track of time. Terrific comfortable vibe. Wine and beer only. Easy, plentiful street parking. Looking forward to their addition of another unique restaurant in a few weeks!

When we went the first time, we thought " this place is ok" but I always like to go a couple times to see whats what. Took some family members from out of town there for dinner and we all loved what we had. I highly recommend the halloumi, and the spicy shrimp entree.

My mom went here and declared the Kurdish breakfast as "the best brunch of her entire life" so I was obligated to check it out. Despite the online reservation system being totally booked we walked in easily soon after opening on a Sunday Loved the Kurdish breakfast for two- everything was delicious. The cheese, the warm bread, jam, olives, soft scrambled eggs... overall very satisfying. We loved the tea and they did a great job refilling it. The staff was very nice. Can't wait to return- already planning to go for dinner.

From the Kurdish coffee cups, to the bread severed with Brunch, this place is authentic. If you want to experience Kurdish hospitality, this is a must.

I've been here twice in the past few months, both times with a good-sized group. Each time the service has been IMPECCABLE, the meals AMAZING, great ambience, and the menus are well-priced. Everything is fresh and delicious! Thanks for being my new go-to place!

been here now numerous times since the first visit -- food continues to be excellent with really great service all around. brunch is still a fav, but dinner menu is tooonly ding on this place is the limited space on the table for all the tasty food, but it is pretty impressive how they manage to lego puzzle everything together each time.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic! Great service, atmosphere, and food.
Very kind waitstaff. Food came out quickly and everything was perfect. We tried both the Turkish coffee & Kurdish coffee and both were really unique and flavorful. Definitely give the stuffed chicken a try. 5 stars all the way!

We were a large party and they were very well organized. All the food was amazing and the pacing was efficient without being rushed. All the staff were pleasant and professional. I would definitely recommend

Best restaurant breakfast I've ever had I think. The Kurdish breakfast for two with the sujuk scramble was outstanding, and the bottomless tea is great as well. I'd come here any time and fully recommend it. I was 20 minutes later than my reservation and they accommodated that, with excellent service and a very genuine and mild ambiance.

TLDR: incredible food, but women bewareHave been for both dinner and brunch. The food and ambiance are both incredible! Beautiful decor, unique tea and coffees, and incredibly fresh, hearty ingredients. The Kurdish breakfast for two especially is a great deal and so so filling without leaving you feeling gross and bloated. I'd love to come back with all my guests, except....We had a server for brunch that was so blatantly sexist I was shocked. I don't just mean assuming that the man at the table was paying when delivering the bill (though that happened too). I mean throughout the entire service, this server never once spoke to me or even made eye contact with me. It's like I wasn't there. He solely spoke to my (male) companion -- when taking our orders, checking in, bringing food, literally everything was "What would you like, sir? How does everything taste, sir?" Never mind I was the one who actually ordered the food -- he took my order without looking at me. Even as we were leaving, he thanked my companion for coming with a "Have a nice day, sir" and completely ignored me. I have never had such an obviously sexist experience at a restaurant in my life. The fact that I'm still leaving four stars is a testament to how overwhelmingly good the food is even in spite of the service. I might get takeout, but don't think I'll be back in person.

The Gundis Kurdish Kitchen is a hidden gem tucked away in Chicago's West Ridge neighborhood. As soon as you step inside, the warm and inviting atmosphere makes you feel like you've entered someone's home. The décor is simple and unassuming, with traditional Kurdish textiles adorning the walls and soft lighting that adds to the cozy ambiance. The restaurant is small but intimate, with just a few tables and chairs. I went last weekend and had a table for 10 and so I'm excited to go back on Sunday with a table for 25. One of the first things you notice when you sit down at Gundis is the aroma of spices wafting from the kitchen. The menu is filled with classic Kurdish dishes like mezze platters, lamb kebabs, and soujouk. There are also a few vegetarian dishes, like the mezze plate and the veggie scramble. The menu is not extensive, but it's clear that each dish has been carefully crafted and perfected over time. The Kurdish Breakfast at Gundis Kurdish Kitchen is truly a feast for the senses. As soon as the platter arrives at your table, you are greeted with an array of colors, textures, and aromas that make your mouth water. The breakfast platter is designed for two people to share, but it's generous enough to feed a small army. The platter includes a variety of cheeses, including feta, fresh mozzarella, and kashar cheese. Each cheese has its own distinct flavor and texture, and they all pair well with the house jams, honey, and butter that are also included on the platter. The Kurdish sesame butter, in particular, is a standout. It has a nutty and slightly sweet flavor that is perfect for spreading on the fresh bread that is also served with the platter. In addition to the cheeses and spreads, the platter also includes black and green olives, fries, cucumbers, tomatoes, and fried cheese rolls. The fries are crispy and salty, and they are a nice addition to the platter. The cucumbers and tomatoes are fresh and juicy, and they add a nice contrast to the rich and savory flavors of the cheeses and spreads. But perhaps the best part of the Kurdish Breakfast platter is the bottomless Kurdish tea. The tea is strong and aromatic, with a slightly bitter flavor that is tempered by the sweetness of the honey and jams on the platter. The tea is served in traditional Kurdish glasses, which are small and delicate, adding to the overall experience of the meal.Overall, the Kurdish Breakfast at Gundis Kurdish Kitchen is an unforgettable dining experience. It's perfect for a lazy weekend morning, or for a special occasion with friends and family. The platter is abundant and delicious, and the bottomless Kurdish tea is the perfect accompaniment. If you're a fan of cheese, bread, and eggs, then the Kurdish Breakfast is not to be missed. For our other main course, we ordered the Soujouk Scramble. Honestly, I wanted to get the Kurdish Baklawa Crepes since it was calling my name, but I wanted something a bit more filling. The soujouk was tender and juicy, and blended so well with the eggs and veggies. The marinade had a subtle blend of spices that complemented the meat perfectly. I added the bread into the mix to get it more of a heavier texture. The service at Gundis was excellent, with friendly and attentive staff who were happy to answer any questions we had about the menu. Our server was knowledgeable about the Kurdish cuisine and offered great recommendations for both food and drinks.Overall, our experience at Gundis Kurdish Kitchen was exceptional. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It's clear that the chefs at Gundis are passionate about Kurdish cuisine and take pride in crafting each dish with care and attention to detail. And the servers are always walking around ready to fill your water/tea cups to the top. If you're looking for an authentic and delicious dining experience in Chicago, I highly recommend checking out Gundis Kurdish Kitchen.
Be the first to ReplyI loved my experience at Gundis.
Made a reservation and was seated early since we showed up a bit earlier. Servers are nice.Pretty loud during brunch but the spread was so fun.For 4. We ordered the Kurdish breakfast with 2 scrambles and an order of pancakes and an extra side of fries and left full.We got the Kurdish Breakfast which came with bread, fries, sides (olives, jams, cheeses, veggies and my fav the cheese rolls).I loved the Turkish coffee - it's stronger and a bit bitter so I get with sugar. Drink it slowly and note there are grounds still in the cup as it's unfiltered. When finished you flip it over and it hardens and it's said you can see your fortune in the hardened grounds (tasseography). The lamb and spicy beef scramble was great! Plenty of meat and veggies and seasoned well. The cheese rolls were sooooo good I swear I could eat 10.Will def be back soon!

Having breakfast here has been on my bucket list for months since I first out about their Kurdish breakfast. I definitely think the meal lives up to the hype! Overall, dining here was a fun experience as we experimented with different combinations of the spreads. We wish the meal included more bread to just to eat it with the sesame butter (our favorite spread after careful review). I highly recommend placing a reservation ahead of time, the place was packed when we arrived.

Friendly service. Great jams, olives and freshly baked bread

Last night we went to Gundis, a Kurdish restaurant, located in the Lakeview neighborhood. It is the first and only Kurdish restaurant in Chicagoland area. Kurdish food is similar to Mediterranean food but with its own unique spices and flavors. I had read the articles on their website to get some background, especially the one that was about the flavors and spices, and for me, that was quite informative.Vegetarians, fish and meat lovers will be very happy here. The wait staff was very helpful. We shared the appetizer sampler (Ezme, Hummus, Octopus Salad, Baba Ganoush) that comes with warm, puffy Kurdish flatbread. Our entrees included Newroz Pasta (olives, feta (sub for tofu), sun-dried tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, roasted veggies, and a touch of tomato sauce), Honey Salmon, Spicy Jumbo Shrimp, and a very traditional entree of Lamb & Veggie Sac Tawa, a sizzling circular steel plate piled with stir-fried meat, peppers, and tomatoes served with a side of rice. Each entree was so flavorful and plenty of food. Reservations recommended. Go ahead, treat yourself.
