Nonchalant service
We went for afternoon tea, and having enjoyed this in the past, were very much looking forward to our special occasion. How disappointed we were, not by the food, but by the poor service and attitude of the staff who really could not have given a damn. We were given a very dismissive welcome, then told to sit in a certain area only to be told to move as that area was booked. We enjoy The George, but can get service like this anywhere, we certainly don’t expect it when spending a lot of money for a special occasion at The George. Just disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyThis hotel is over-rated and pretentious
I last went to this hotel some 25 years ago. It was lovely then. But now; what has happened to the place? It has plummeted. Our experience was an anticlimax. The place is overrated and pretentious. Our two-night stay here was, to say the very least, a disappointment. The building is tired, the furniture is tired. Some of the younger staff are haughty. You do not get your paper with the tea you order for the morning wake-up call and they ‘only have the Times’ said with a smirk after asking you which paper you would like. Breakfast is a complete fiasco. No dietary alternative menus are available. Bored and yawning or self-important waiting staff. You get toast, wait for butter, toast gets hard and cold and you go off the idea. You order your breakfast. On the first day it arrived 45 minutes later. Cold porridge is not nice, dried banana was not expected, one quarter of a strawberry was edible. My eggs were cold though scrambled and my cured bacon was like something from a motorway café, cold, hard, burnt on one side and completely inedible. More toast was ordered and it arrived lukewarm and despite its request, no more butter arrived. All 4 of us had a similarly poor experience. I left the restaurant hungry and dissatisfied at around 10.30am, having arrived at 9am. Even the ‘Fortnum & Mason’ served tea was cold. I could not bring myself to join my party for breakfast on day two; I ate out later. They waited 1 hour and 20 minutes for their breakfasts to be served and again, they arrived too cold to eat. Too much theatrical faffing goes on in that restaurant and they seem to think they are delivering a silver service, but they are very much mistaken. At least they had the decency to remove the cost of the inedible breakfasts after a complaint was made. Our evening dining experience was not much of an improvement. Having agreed to a 7.30 table, we were directed to the bar instead. We gave our dining order here but of course you are now having drinks so everything takes an age. Canapes arrive, so you have another drink. Very clever. I do not usually drink before I eat. You eventually get taken to the dining room around an hour later. Dinner was of a good standard but it is excessively priced with small portions. You ask the supercilious waiting staff for a drink whilst dining and it gets forgotten. You remind them half an hour later and are given an excuse. You ask a third time. Dessert was by far the superior part of the meal, crepe suzette, cooked at the table to perfection by a very pleasant and capable young woman. Our room was tiny but unlike our friends’ room, was quiet. Our bed and pillows were the best features of this hotel. The room was too hot but it was clean and pleasant for an aged building where the windows are held closed with excessive paint. We did not eat at the hotel for our second evening. We did however have drinks when we returned after eating somewhere far superior and being served by waiters who were not so puffed-up to do their job properly. The night-time Bar Manager was clearly one of the few staff at the hotel who understood how to please his clientele and delighted us with interesting information about the history of the George, including that of the Hangman’s Beam, however, at £37 for two large inferior vodkas with tonic, we were left with a bitter taste. Will we be returning to the George of Stamford again? No.
Be the first to ReplyA Birthday Lunch
I have just been to celebrate my sister’s birthday at The George in Stamford. Not only was the food delicious, (I had the mussels followed by the sticky toffee pudding with hot sauce and delicious ice cream), the setting was perfect and the service was exceptional . We had lunch in The Garden Room and were looked after and served by a lovely young lady named Rachel. Rachel was a delight and looked after our every need and request. She was polite, engaging, informative about the town and it was an absolute pleasure to meet her. Thank you all for making the hotel look so lovely, even in the snow. Thank you chef for the most delicious lunch and thank you very much Rachel, for making our birthday celebration one to remember. We will be returning soon!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent will make this a regular treat
We stayed overnight and took advantage of the deal for money off dinner in the oak room restaurant. We had been meaning to try the George for a while on the recommendation of a family member, now we will definitely be back. It is such a lovely old place, staff are professional, friendly and helpful. Dinner in the oak room restaurant was superb, the various lounges and bars really cosy and quaint. Cannot fault, thank you.

This hotel is a must to stay in. Our 3 night stay could not have been better, from the excellent greeting on arrival, to the whole welcoming atmosphere of the place. The age of the hotel has been superbly retained, with many wonderful features . Our room on the first floor, with much to our surprise, a small sitting room, was extremely good. We could not fault it in any way, especially the bathroom which just the best! I love a good bathroom! The restaurant not only serves very good food, but the decor is a must to be seen. Wooden paneling on the walls, beautifully laid tables, and as for the orchids, they are everywhere. Plus the waiting staff were excellent. We very much enjoyed the roast beef carved in front of us with all the trimmings, but on a slightly sour note the special Burns night dinner was a big disappointment, with the exception of the gentleman who played the bagpipes. Our only small complaint was that the lit fire in the stunning fireplace in the lounge could have been better looked after, as for most of the time it only had the tiniest of flames. In fact on our last evening my partner and another male guest decided it needed attention. So took the matter to hand, and got it glowing beautifully. Then told the staff what they had done. Thank you to all the staff, you were just the best! Would we return? Yes!!

Jazz night at the George hit all the right notes. We were greeted on arrival with a smile and shown to our table in the lovely Garden room amongst the glorious plants. Not only was the menu well planned with something to please everyone the food was also cooked to perfection. Well done to all the unseen heroes in the kitchen. Thank you to all at the George for making my wife’s birthday so memorable especially our ever cheery waiters, see photo!!
Be the first to ReplyPerfect overnight stay
We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay - beautiful and comfortable room, perfect little touches such as coffee, orange juice and a newspaper delivered early morning to our room. Absolutely delicious and plentiful breakfast in the Garden Room with wonderful, friendly service. Just lovely.....thank you very much.

To celebrate 40 years of knowing each other we went to The George Hotel ...lovely hotel .However...I have difficulty walking and use a mobility scooter. Steps everywhere and nobody offered a ramp or any help . It was a real challenge ! We ate in the Oak Room , really expensive . delicious on Wednesday...poor on Tuesday .... a different chef I think .. Altogether not being able to get around really spoiltit . Even the Accessible toilet had a step up to it !
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed
Food was very disappointing at the garden room, we had starters French onion soap which had no flavour, then I had sea bass which tasted old, my wife had lobster which was half and tiny and with no flavour. The dessert was no better. The wine we paid 40 pounds a bottle and was very disappointing. Place to avoid
