This is the place for a true English feast.
Fish and chips here are my go-to: beer battered cod wrapped in newspaper, properly English thick-cut chips (not thin French fries!), tartar sauce, and mushy peas. The accoutrements, including the tartar sauce, are homemade, which I appreciate. The slow braised ox cheek on the recession-busting menu (more on that later) is also excellent. Tender, melt-in-your-mouth, served with a side of mash and steamed veggies. I love the rotating daily "Recession Busting" menu item for S$9.99. The English House is one of the few restaurants offering a choice to guests to save, in thanks for their patronage. More beautiful words have not been said: "We are heading South instead of North." The interior reeks of a charming antique shop -- the restaurant is adorned with various sculptures of past and present, Eastern and Western. It's a lovely atmosphere that I haven't quite found anywhere else.

The restaurant is situated in a lovely shophouse on Md Sultan Road, and is one of the most interesting restaurant interiors in Singapore. Each room has its own theme and it definitely transports you to an old English pub. They have an extensive menu (even have Dim Sums which may be a throwback to HK being an english colony earlier). We had heard good things about the fish and chips here so that was our main interest. I think it was a case of having too much expectation. The fish wasn't crispy nor was it well seasoned. The chips as well didn't have that nice fresh crunch. For the price, I felt that the quality and quantity should have been better. The starters were good though. As were the drinks. Just wish the fish and chips, being such a quintessential british dish was executed better.

Triple cooking for chips is a great idea and well executed at this place. Also, the place is very interesting, would love to go back there for drinks, it reminds me of the places I enjoyed going to in London and Paris (Home House, Bob Bob Ricard, Beef Club, etc)

Very nice ambience and decoration, good service by friendly staffs. Ordered fish and chips since it is English House, but it was just so so. The wedges were dried and tasteless, thanks to the refreshing tartar and chili sauce, I finished the cod fish... My colleague ordered the Singapore spicy fry noodle with pork cheek. She let me tried abit of it, it was basically a sweet sauce fry koey teow (Singapore local fried flat noodle). Nothing impressive about the food, but I enjoyed the ambience very much. Hmm.. Maybe just a visit for eye opening, hard to get me go back again.

I was invited to The English House for breakfast, an English breakfast, of course. The breakfast menu is quite extensive - ranging from the traditional English breakfast, crumpets, porridge oats to smoked haddock, though black pudding is not on the list. The toasts were done with the right crisp and brown, and needed no more than a generous spread of their home-made butter. I could be happy with just toasts and coffee but I had to try their poached egg on crushed avocado with coriander on toast, with bacon on the side. The poached egg, with a dark yellow liquid centre oozing down when cut was just delicious. The coriander was not too strong and the touch of sprinkled salt on the plate was just right. A delightful choice if one does not want a heavy breakfast. The English House is an excellent place for a meal with friends or work meetings. Though there were quite a number of patrons for an early morning Sunday meal, it has a comfortable ambience that encourages conversations. Also, an excellent service from the staff. I will be back for their lunch or dinner the next time. It's easy to miss The English House along Mohd Sultan Road but look out for the lush green entrance courtyard along the row of shophouses. .
