Still great option for Cajun in the South Bay - fun atmosphere + good food
I haven't been to the Bywater since pre-pandemic 2019. I remembered this place when thinking about a dining venue for my two friends and me. Fun atmosphere + good food all were just as I remembered. I also was reminded that some servings might be on the small side. We all ordered the gumbo - super tasty, but the "bowl" is really more of a hearty appetizer than a full entree. For three of us, we ended up ordering fried oysters, the gumbo, and an order of fried chicken (plus dessert). The cocktails were awesome and service was great. We were outdoors in their lower patio on a cold and rainy night. With the roof and heaters we were very comfortable.

Service was and food was good. Amazing selection of bourbons. Only negative I have was that I only got a fraction of fries with my po boy. I would think more than 8 or so would be expected, but luckily I was not super hungry. Oherwise good experience.

Visiting family in town and they have frequented this restaurant often. It is an "experimental" restaurant owned by a Michelin star chef down the street. I lived in southern Louisiana and New Orleans for nearly 20 years so I know cajun/creole food. It's hard not to compare especially when the chef had some training in New Orleans and named this restaurant after an area of N.O. This is supposed to be an Asian fusion restaurant. We opted for oysters Rockafella rather than raw. Some in the group have an aversion to cheese/dairy and we were assured that there was no cheese, it was hollandaise. The sauce didn't taste like hollandaise, had more of a strong cream taste. The remoulade was good but could've used more seasoning. We got fried oysters on the mixed green salad rather than chicken or shrimp. Should have a different coating than heavy cornmeal. The chicken liver mousse was overwhelmed by the jam on top, which wasn't listed. The biggest disappointment was the Chili crab. The soft shell crab had cornmeal coating which took away from any flavor or texture of the soft shell crab. The sauce on top had what looked like bristle brush sheddings that we later found out was lemongrass. None of us detected any pineapple in the very wet and overly salty fried rice. The beignets were soggy in the middle, almost like uncooked dough.

Unique jambalaya, beans n rice, gumbo, and other dishes
Surprise! Cajun hole in the wall fine food
Our son brought us here for ‘excellent food and drinks and he hit a home run. A fine back bar and an expert bartender produced delicious Manhattans... and later a great red wine. Amongst us we had Cajun fries, oysters, shrimp poboy, red beans and rice with andouille, back cod and a vegan salad. If that sounds Louisiana inspired you would be right. Rave reviews from all 5 of us. Dessert was beignets and a caramel pot de creme.. outstanding! Service was knowledgeable and attentive... just right. Can’t wait to go again next trip.

Met friends here a bit before 6 pm so still happy hour. Mix drinks and raw oysters 1/2 price. We had reservations so we’re seated quickly. Restaurant is small so reservations a good idea. My hubby had fried chicken with fries ( replacing beans), our friend had beans and rice. That was supposed to have sausage init but hard to find. My girlfriend and I split the abundant avocado and shrimp salad ($18) and the Cajun pasta with smokie sausage and corn ($20). Both were excellent! There are specials listed on a board that we didn’t see but the smoked pork steak was on it and looked delicious ($24). Th absolute highlight was the hot beignets for dessert. Don’t know how much they cost but we gobbled them up!

I really enjoyed the feel of this place. They have a cozy dining area with a small patio in the back, but everything is decorated to create a good atmosphere.
They have an extensive wine list, but most are by the bottle. They have a fun mixed drinks list too. For meals, they have about 15 items or so. It's a pretty small set, but you can probably find an item to enjoy. Everything here is creatively made, so this isn't the place if you have picky eaters or aren't particularly adventurous. If that's you, and you come here anyway, a good option is the fried chicken with red beans and rice. Pretty typical and yummy
I came here with 2 others who are more adventurous than I am, and they didn't enjoy their meals: the po boy sandwich or the grilled cheese with tomato soup special. Just a bit too unusual.
We ended with both desserts, the caramel pot de creme and the beignets. Loved the pot de creme. The beignets were served warm (yay) but were a bit tasteless. We scooped a bit of the caramel with a bite of the beignets and that made it tasty.
Glad we tried this place, but probably won't come back too soon.
Love This Place!
When in Los Gatos just after lunch at 2 or so we drop in to have a great drink, very fresh oysters and a terrific shrimp salad which was not as good as usual.
It is always great spot, but now open only on Fridays for lunch.
Love the little bar feel, and the LSU, New Orleans and other decor from the area they represent.
Sat outside, service was slow for drinks and they were not busy..
NOLA notes
To be transported to the Big Easy experience Bywater. Laid back, fun and excellent colorful food. The shrimp roulade was amazing! The tomato salad with soft shell crab was both fresh and delicious!!! If you like Cajun this is your place!!!

If you want some great southwestern food, brunch, and craft cocktails, this is your place. Nice indoor seating area with great service. Extensive wine list with some unique meat dishes on the menu. Worth a try while in downtown Los Gatos, CA.

ByWater Resturant was a very tasty experience. We were expecting alot more offerings on the menu. So for us it seemed a bit limited. The Restaurant gets above our comfort zone and gets very loud.
Be the first to ReplyA bar with good food
We went to Bywater last night with some friends who had been there before. They had described it as "a bar with good food" and I would agree. We had a reservation but went early in the hopes of getting our table earlier; if now, we planned to wait in the bar and have a drink. After about 10 minutes we were offered a table out on the patio. Given that it was in the high 40's we were a bit iffy about that idea but tried it anyway since they assured us there were heaters and we would be warm. There are in fact heaters, and the top half of our bodies was warm enough...in our coats. The two members of our party who sat with their back to the open space leading outside were colder than those of us who sat against the bar. There could be a door, even a hanging kind of door like you see in the east coast, to prevent the cold wind from coming in. I would not sit in the patio again in winter.
Service was a bit disappointing. I wanted something sparkling, and the suggestion (I think by the bartender) was a Kir Royale. Great, I thought, but wait...they don't have cassis (a key ingredient). Fine, I went with a prosecco...they don't have that either but they gave me a sparkling wine that was fine. One of my friends order a vodka tonic with 2 olives. His drink came without the olives. It took asking three other servers, and waiting until halfway through our dinner before the olives showed up (thank you to the server who brought them to us). The menu is small, and when 2 of us wanted the shrimp and grits, we were told that the shrimp had not arrived that day. Ok, sometimes that happens. At the end of dinner, we ordered beignets. Nope, they were out of those too. I can understand when a vendor doesn't come through, but beignets are made with ordinary ingredients that can be found at Safeway. How can they not have beignets?
My husband and I had the fried chicken and it was delicious. We started with the shrimp and avocado remoulade, also delicious (although the mustard used is hot, so if you don't like that don't order the dish). Our friends had the asian noodle dish and the herb and green salad, also very good (although I don't see how the asian dish fits in with cajun...Cajun Asian?). Due to the lack of Beignets we went home for dessert.
In summary, while we enjoyed our food, the experience wasn't as good as we expected. When you have a small menu of choices, it's important to have all of those options available. We spent $50 per person, with each person having 1 drink, we paid corkage for one bottle of wine, we had two mains and 2 starters for the 4 of us. It wasn't a $50 per person dinner (although it was probably half that if you take out the alcohol). I kind of had the feeling that their feeling was "it's Sunday night, not that many people will come, so let's not over order our supplies". That may not be the case, but that's how it made me feel. I probably won't be going back.
