very good but a bit weird
so I was hesitant re points - but the food was actually good, and that is the point of a restaurant. Good drinks, too. It's a hotel restaurant and already the hotel is a bit hidden - once you come in, it is very fancy indeed. But once you enter the restaurant from the lobby, fancedom radically declines. There is a bit of the old clubbish setup, Dorchester, Connaught, but of course it doesn't deliver that. Staff was mixed but the working waitresses were definitely friendly. The other customers were somehow very strange, in a truly odd way, seemingly inhouse guests, but ofc the hotel is not to be blamed for that. Yeah, the title encapsules it. Oh, it's not a cheap place of course, but then, why should it be.

Well, this was a bit of a find. A lovely old style hotel and restaurant with a cool, fun vibe, great food and excellent service. All the staff were so pleasant from the doorman to the saxophone player in the funky bar. Loved it!

Charming restaurant in an old London hotel. Delicious food (Chris is raving about the fish and chips). Service was amazing. A customer called us gorgeous. And, they are playing Billy Holiday. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We enjoyed a wonderful Saturday evening at the Blue Door.
Service was attentive and the food was excellent. I absolutely loved the Barnsley Lamp chip which was very well cooked.
The Petit Fours topped off a great evening and we will be back when we visit London again.
Great Sunday lunch with friends
We had agreed to meet some friends from Manchester for lunch in London on what proved to be a wet Sunday in February. We had been to the Blue Door previously for dinner and the lunch proved to be at least as good. The restaurant was not busy so the ambience was quieter than we had experienced before. The service was excellent - attentive but not pushy. The food was as before very good although the starter portions were on the small side given the cost. The main courses were very good. Two of the part had roast lamb rump which was beautifully cooked and presented. One had grilled sea bass, ditto. A Thai curry and ravioli were also pronounced excellent. There is a good wine list with a number of good wines available by the glass (their Picpoul is highly recommended) as well as a number of (very) fine wines also available. For those who prefer draught beers, there is a reasonable choice and the Coast to Coast can be recommended.
This is not a cheap restaurant but in my opinion it is good value given the high quality of both food and service. We shall return.
It is worth calling the restaurant to book a table directly especially if you have any kind of food allergy or prefer a quiet table.
I double checked the reviews
I double checked the reviews I read prior to booking the Blue Door last night.
There might be two but what I experienced last night was 1970s cuisine at its worst.
A goat cheese salad served with a Parmesan crisp sounded lovely but in keeping with the 70s theme play spot the goats cheese and Parmesan crisp in the sea of garlic mayonnaise .
Perhaps the greatest offence was the serving of the main courses, a prawn stroganoff, not just cold but a crust had formed on the basmati rice.
The ambience was probably at it’s best in the 70s.
Disappointing and a 25% discount for a main course served cold just not good enough especially when it was the manager himself who served the food and acknowledged after that the plates had felt cold.
The area is full of good value little Mediterranean restaurants give them your custom and do not reward places like this.
Energetic staff
We had just arrived from Portugal & were staying at the Montague for a few nights.
The reviews rave about the Blue Door so we “stayed in” on our first night.
The menu is small but varied, although vegetarians aren’t well catered for, and overall the menu lacked energy. It was a bit staid.
Not so the staff, who were all accomodating and knowledgeable and gave advice about the food etc.
To be honest it was over a week ago and I can’t really remember much about the meal.
I know it satisfied my appetite and tasted good. No complaints.
The standout was the hospitality offered by well trained staff. All credit to them.
On The Garden's
My friend and I were in Central London and fancy having afternoon tea, with no reservation on hand we came across The Montague and booked it...
The reception which greeted us was lovely all the staff were very nice and friendly.
We were taken to our table which I was a bit surprised about because it was in the conservative not sure if that's makes it the garden area. Or because it has been raining all day in London.
On the other hand we had one tray between us and it was just enough..
If you are really hungry one tray would not be enough for two people..
The food was amazing and we enjoyed every bit of it
Somewhere new
Found this place via Trip Advisor- what a find! Fantastic food in an lovely setting with really really good service. The black pudding scotch egg was outstanding as was all the other starters our party had. Mains were top drawer too - steaks cooked to perfection and the prawn stroganoff was delicious. Will eat here again without a doubt
