Mothers Day
6 of us and a 6 week old baby visited here.We we’re seated upstairs which although not as vibrant as downstairs was more convenient for the baby.A set 3 course meal a bit pricey but reflective of current financial situation. We all enjoyed our visit and they accommodated us for any needs for the infant . Food was well presented and service was attentive. Our visit lasted 3 1/2 hours but were never rushed parking was a bit tight but room on road outside and was fully booked for the day we visited

Be the first to ReplyAs good as it ever was
We returned to the Bell for the first time since the pandemic. We were relieved to find that it was as good as it ever was. The booking of the table was efficient. We were welcomed on arrival and shown to our table. We were struck that the dining room was very well staffed with very pleasant and efficient staff. The food was excellent. The bread with the flavoured butter was excellent. For our mains we had the filet of pork and the calves liver which we both excellent. We did not sample the dessert menu but enjoyed coffee and very good petit fours. All in all a very enjoyable experience in a very professionally run restaurant. Throughly recommended
Be the first to ReplySunday dinner.
Food good, service good, wheelchair access terrible. Have to get up the ramp, hold open a door while getting wheelchair into a tiny lobby, pulling the wheelchair around as the lobby is so small, then have to hold open another door while trying to juggle it through that door, then finally inside! A bit of sensible building work could be done so the doors line up so you could go straight through. I know its an old building, but I'm sure this could easily be achieved.

… to this place. Used to be a lovely bar and restaurant but it’s now a rowdy shambles! Food order was wrong (our fault apparently) then the food was cold. The drinks tab was a piece of fiction. How can you mess coffee up these days? Rowdy clientele mocking my disabled wife as I took her to the only disable friendly bathroom (outside across the car park) Such a shame but no wonder I got a large table last minute booking. I guess even the regulars are abandoning the place!
Be the first to ReplyA true gem of an establishment. Highly recommended!
Went for Sunday lunch with some old friends and we had a fantastic time. The food was exceptional all-round, and the wine list well-considered and curated. Both food and drink are good value. The service was friendly and attentive despite being a busy Sunday service. Keep up the good work, all involved. Highly recommended.

Place was full when we visited with friends on a Saturday night. Shown to our table. Started witha drink. Ordered 3 courses. Food and service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyBit of delay
Return after a while. Incredibly busy today, sadly meant a Kong time between courses. "Entertained" by family with four children next table one playing a phone, console very loudly. Roast was ok but Yorkshire a bit crunchy for me. Ok meal, not as exceptional as in the past
Be the first to ReplyGood old pub grub with a twist.
Hadn’t eaten at the Bell for years and wasn’t disappointed. A good choice of food and all was well presented and piping hot.
Be the first to ReplyFamily celebratory meal out
I had heard good things about this place. However, it was a disappointing experience. There was no allocated waitress for our table. We waited 25 minutes to have our order taken and that was because we called them over. It was difficult to get their attention as they were all walking with their heads down. I ordered the GF option and the portion size of gravy was ridiculously small. The portions of veg and potatoes were very small. The meat was nice: Service continued to be slow and we waited 45 mins to be asked about pudding. Definitely not worth the pricey amount they charge. Perhaps not enough staff.

I have had many meals here and always enjoyed them, but I think the place is resting a bit on its laurels. The lamp rump I had was the toughest piece of meat ever. I could barely chew it! And £28? If you pay that kind of money for a dish, you do expect quality and it was sadly missing. I didn't like to complain at the time as I was being treated to the meal, but I will really think again before recommending this place to anyone else. And if you sit outside you have to go and order from the bar, which involved a lot of queuing, so another reason why prices are unacceptably high.
Be the first to ReplyHigh end gastro pub dining
We stayed at this beautiful historic inn in the quiet village of Horndon on the Hill for a couple of nights. The food at their restaurant is wonderful. I would rate this as one of the finest gastro pubs for dining that we have ever visited. It is certainly high end gastro pub dining. I have dined in good restaurants that couldn't compete with the food presented here. So, excellence awaits but please ensure that you make a reservation in advance since good news travels far and wide.
Be the first to ReplyLovely Visit
We had a lovely night away last weekend . We arrived around midday & sat in the Beautiful Sunshine in the pretty Flowery Garden . We ordered a bottle of wine & a few Beers. We asked for a Menu to have some Lunch & Browsed over it in The Garden . The Menu was showing only Dinners & as we already had a table booked that Evening at The Bell , we were only looking for Sandwiches / Jacket potatoes etc . We decided there was nothing suitable . A little while later the table next to us ( outside ) had lots of “picky” bits , so we went inside to enquire . We were shown The Bar snack menu written on the Wall behind the bar . We ordered from that & had sticky sausages , chips , battered prawns on sticks etc brought out to our table . These were delicious and exactly what we needed to tide us over til Dinner later . We stayed in The Josephine room which was lovely & right next door to the Restaurant for our Meal that Evening . The Dinner was lovely & we had a really nice Breakfast in the separate Dining area in the Morning . The staff were all very friendly & polite . The only negatives were that there should be a separate light menu for people like us that don’t read the board ! Lol & who just want some snacks , The Chocolate Creme Brûlée on the main menu should be advertised as Dark Chocolate as it was very strong & bitter & tasted like Dark chocolate to me & I had to leave it as it is an acquired taste . Overall a pleasant stay & would stay again .

I have to say from beginning to end one of the best meals we have had in years. Each plate absolutely amazing. Construction of flavours, tiny touches like lemon grass micro greens made each dish surprising. Could not fault even a mouthful.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Sunday Lunch
The Bell has a long standing reputation for good food, and based on our first experience it's well deserved. We've eaten in a few Michelin restaurants, and some items were certainly very close to that standard. Lamb scrumpet and the Heritage Tomato Salad (both starters) were excellent; but the one item that really would not be out of place in a Michelin restaurant was the “homemade petit fours” (really, really well made with a lot of care and thought). Our main courses were nice, well cooked, well presented. Good selection of freshly cooked vegetables. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Sensible prices, no automatic service charge (which is nice to see).
Be the first to ReplyFelt rushed
Let me preface this review by saying I totally acknowledge we were 30 minutes late for the booking (a group of business people from across Europe who had delayed flights so our meeting in Basildon overran) the waitress (who was nice in actual fact) was pretty shirty when we arrived (at 20:30 not 20:00) saying we must order quickly We then had three courses rushed out to us in 90 mins, bar closed at just after 10pm and the staff were literally taking glasses away as we were chatting - very weird, just not made to feel welcome In terms of food - dishes were interesting, tasty and stylishly presented - but not without flaws The pasta on the salt beef raviolo was overly al dente (ie hard) - it needed 30 secs or so longer My pork main was great A few folks said the liver dish was over and a bit tough Desserts and cheeseboard were very good - as were the coffees So food almost great, rushed service not so much
Be the first to ReplySpectacular lunch
Had an absolutely spectacular lunch. Been coming here for over 20 years & it never disappoints. The food today was epic, as good, if not better than any Michelin stared restaurant. Strongly advise a visit.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic great food
Great place to eat great food, no freezer to microwave slop here. Staff friendly & helpful, would definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, nice staff, relaxed
Nice beamed bar and restaurant. Welcoming staff as I was staying here as a lone traveller for work. Great real ale. Food prices on the higher side, but really good. Arrived a little late, so didn’t want too much so chose olives instead of a starter - gosh they were GOOD with cornichons and chillies. Unusual version of gnocchi as a main, but super tasty with lovely veg side including fab shredded cabbage and heritage carrots. After a long day and an awful journey this was really welcome, so a nice plate of food, glass of wine and early to bed. Perfect thanks.

Another lovely visit. Tucked away at the top of the building in the Hideaway room. Great views over the surrounding countryside to the Thames. Spotless wet room with large bath and walk in shower.
Superb meal in the evening. Service and food too notch.
Breakfast in Ostlers was great too. Really tasty eggs Benedict. Thanks!

Last minute booking.
Loved the return, as good as ever.
Great food, efficient friendly staff
Another really enjoyable experience
Dinner at The Bell.
Always a great meal. British pub if the 1993. The wood panelled rooms give a feel of a village pub, but don’t be fooled, while it is a nice casual pub, the food in the restaurant is very much fine dining.
Always great food. Great place for couples, friends or in my case a work event.
They have a private dining too I think upstairs.
Will be back.
Wonderful meal
Visited The Bell on Friday lunchtime and was very impressed. Everything was brilliant: I had duck which was delicious and succulent. My husband had the pork which he loved. Desserts were equally good and the staff and service great. We took home a selection of the petit fours and they were to die for. Will definitely be back even though we are not local.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant for lunch
This is an old favourite for us and we enjoyed it again this time. We booked ahead for 12 midday and it wasn't busy then but soon started to fill up, good for a Monday.
I had the beef confit suet pudding, my wife the veggie option and there were just so many tastes. Presentation impeccable. For us the Bell has always delivered some really good cooking. We just had to follow up with the desserts as well.
Service friendly and helpful. Excellent value. We'll keep on coming !
Excellent one night stay with dinner
Many years ago my friends and I always would visit Christmas Eve for a few drinks. It always had a great atmosphere and I’ve fond memories. Visiting family locally we decided to try an overnight stay with dinner. What an excellent choice. Lovely (upgraded) room. Huge bed, spotlessly clean, modern bathroom and huge TV! Dinner in the restaurant was superb. Arancini as a starter for both of us followed by roast turkey and pan fried salmon. Great service too. Well definitely return.
