The Aviary Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Spectacular
Spectacular place to dine. The food is delicious. The ambiance is really nice. The cocktails are excellent. Really enjoyed dining and drinking here.
The Aviary is truly a unique experience - their menu items
The Aviary is truly a unique experience - their menu items and drinks are very innovative. I tried the Ginger drink and it came in a cool glass vase. It tasted amazing, and the quantity was abundant. The service was really great, felt like the waiter was attentive and tried to make my birthday special. I would say the ambiance would be nice but the place feels so packed.
It's been awhile and I look forward to going back! It's so
It's been awhile and I look forward to going back! It's so creative and fun to see what drinks will appear. They could add more gluten free options, but maybe they have more now. Really great experience! Recommend highly!
Fancy drinks
The place to be for fancy drinks. The cocktails seem to taste better here. Can’t wait to return! Great spot to hangout with friends.
A truly unique and impressive cocktail bar! The ambiance is
A truly unique and impressive cocktail bar! The ambiance is great and it is open late. We had a friend get us reservations so can't speak to that part but the cocktails are really cool here and they will get you tipsy!! They mark on the menu which cocktails come with more theatrics which is appreciated. I highly recommend you go with one with more of a presentation if you are like me. I really enjoyed mine which I believe was a sake drink.
Fancy themed cocktails in a brightly lit lounge atmosphere.
Cocktails: 4 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4 Cost to worth it rating: 3 (3 cocktails $100 including tax/tip) Opentableable: no, but via Tock Return worthiness: maybe Highlights: - Some unique drinks: the rum popping boba, slingshot crack the ice orb whiskey, and signature circular infuser were the highlight presentations. - Atmosphere: felt like a lobby bar which has it's pluses for not being too dark or intimidating. - Tasting menu options: liked having 3 to try and they were full drinks and also pre-paying including tip saves you the hassle when you're there. Midlights: - Drinks were fine and appreciated the high quality ingredients, however nothing stood out on pure taste as being exceptional. - Waitress clearly had a script she repeated verbatim to each table which was a bit more robotic than welcoming to a fun higher end experience. - Menu was a bit confusing with the main order being the weight of the drink and birds on the left side for more impressive presentation. Lowlights: - Because so many high end specialty cocktail places have surfaced, it's not as much of a WOW factor as it likely was when they opened years ago. Had an entertaining stop here post-dinner at Next.
We had the 5 cocktail tasting menu paired with small bites.
The food, as one would expect from the Alinea Group, was spectacular and special - perfect scallop, caviar, blue crab, etc. mostly all paired wisely with the cocktails. The cocktails were visually stunning, and most were superb. The opening ginger tequila infusion delighted, and a lychee mix followed (too quickly) that was a real sparkler. The visual high point - copper bird glasses on a beautiful nest with food served in porcelain eggshells - was a taste letdown. Cloyingly sweet drink we didn't finish, which at this price point is unfortunate. The inevitable smoke cocktail followed, well-paired with pork belly, and then a magnificent Mexican hot chocolate spiked with rum. Pacing, as with my meal at Next last year, was off - far too rushed. It's five cocktails, and I do not expect to be pushed to swill my very expensive drinks and gobble my food to accommodate the kitchen. I asked the waiter to slow the roll and he accommodated, unlike the meal at Next last year where we were the last seating but courses were piled on top of each other. Ambiance is visually relaxing and intimate, with scoopy, elegant banquettes. However, the music was TOO LOUD and almost all of the playlist was rap/Buddha bar music. I came to talk to my companion, not talk OVER a spoken word soundtrack. Our waiter was superb. Overall, at this price point, I expect a more thoughtful pace centered on MY experience, not the whim of the kitchen, and a more appropriate soundscape. The third, super-sugary cocktail was too sweet for almost any palate.
This isn't just a meal people! THIS is an EXPERIENCE!!!
This isn't just a meal people! THIS is an EXPERIENCE!!! It's like an art show (or modeling show) with food and cocktails as the participants. SO awesome! Thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Love that it's prepaid, so one can just focus on enjoying the cocktails, the food, the exceptional service and the fantastic atmosphere. Every single thing I ate and drank was FABULOUS. Words cannot describe. SO glad my friend suggested going here.
TL;DR: Unique cocktails with flavor and cool presentations.
Be prepared to spend some money This place is great if you want to sip on a nice cocktail. All the servers are very knowledgeable and kind. If you don't care about the presentation or flavor, I would say this might not be your cup of tea. They had great presentations and it was fun to see what other people got too! Cocktails: *Chapulin Colorado: Interesting flavor with Bell Peppers and can smell how fresh they are Two to Tango: Great cocktail that is cold and would be perfect for a resort drink Affogato: High end espresso martini like taste My Neighbor To-Taro: Cool presentation and felt like the drink was very funky since it was warm, but fun to try
The Aviary was on my bucket list so we went for my birthday.
Hot tip: EAT BEFORE arrival. The cocktails are beautifully & creatively presented, visually stimulating, & extremely high in alcohol content! If you pair with courses, they take extreme care to mind allergies & diet restrictions. The food pairing is delicately presented & very small in portion size. Eating something to absorb the amount of alcohol will save you from a very rough day after. ;)
Suburban sugar factory.
I really wish I could have given a better rating. We did the 5 course menu with drinks and bites. Pros: the food was excellent. Interesting flavors, well plated, and perfectly cooked. The drink presentation was beautiful. The ambiance was interesting though not beautiful. Cons: it took 25 minutes for us to get a drink or bite after we sat down with a reservation. The drink pairings were so heavy on simple syrup and juice that you couldn't taste anything else. As a business that built its reputation on cocktails, it was so sad to see what they are serving now. Even the "spirit forward" drinks were just sugar and booze. In their defense, they did put effort into addressing our comments on the sweet drinks by offering a couple of replacement drinks. The first was also super sweet, the second was the best drink we had there (some kind of frozen ball where you broke it open to have the drink spill out). Our server tried to address our comments but also set down the last drink and never came back (we pre-paid). No manager ever came over despite our table clearly not enjoying the drinks (we left most of them half drunk on our table by the end). Sadly, I think this has become a tourist trap and not a real restaurant/bar up to the standards of the Alinea Group of the past. It gave us an interesting story to tell at a dinner party. But we won't be back.

Great Atmosphere with sophisticated beverages
What an amazing experience! Not only is the atmosphere chic and elegant, the presentation of the drinks was over the top. Great place to have an intimate date or a business meeting.
Beautifully Balanced Cocktails in a Gorgeous Setting
My husband and I were SO excited to be able to secure reservations to The Aviary on a recent visit to Chicago. Having dined at Alinea the night before, we were presented with a token to use at The Aviary (in a little vending machine) that resulted in getting a "starter" drink on the house! It was a smaller size than the main cocktails on the menu, and so delicious! For our first round, I selected the Ginger cocktail and my husband chose the Chapulin Colorado. The Ginger was incredible - the warming spices (clove and cinnamon) beautifully complimented the citrus and tequila flavors. The Chapulin Colorado was perplexing in the best way. It was very bell pepper forward until the popsicle melted more and gave way to stronger licorice (from the absinthe) and cherry flavors. For my second round, I ordered the Fill Collins and I loved it just as much as the Ginger. With pisco, rose, and hibiscus lending floral notes and the strawberry shrub providing fruitiness and a little funk, it was a beautifully balanced cocktail. Finally, as we were celebrating our anniversary, they gave us a digestif on the house, and while I don't remember what all was in it, it was absolutely perfect - a little fruity, warming, with just a hint of sourness, it was the best way to end our time at The Aviary. Our server, Andrew, was lovely and so friendly - we couldn't have asked for a better way to start our evening!
Bottoms up
Aviary is everything it is purported to be: amazing drinks, fabulous presentation, delicious food. Have the corn based cocktail.
Unique, Upscale Bar
The Aviary is an upscale establishment that serves unique cocktails and bar food. We went with friends for drinks before having dinner at Next. This is the first bar I've visited where reservations are required and the place fills up as soon as the doors open at 5pm. We tried 4 different cocktails, each was a production. The service was superb. The price for the 4 cocktails, including tax and 20% automatically applied service charge, was $146. It was worth the experience.
A unique experience in a beautiful setting with friendly staff
We had a wonderful experience at the Aviary. The ambience was fabulous and loved the fact that we could hear each other talk across the table while at a bar! The drink presentations reminded me of a magic show: Very fun and entertaining. The drinks were incredibly tasty and the small bites literally melted in our mouths. Thank you Alicia, Mateo, Andy, Hunter, Raphael, Chef Elliott for a beautiful experience!
Glad To Have Experienced It
Drinks were very creative, tasty, strong, and fun. We enjoyed the drinks presentation of— the explanation was similar to a tasting/five star menu. Drinks are priced to presentation and Chicago. We did not like the one with boba bottles and our neighbors didn’t seem to enjoy it either. We alerted our waiter and he did not acknowledge or made any effort to reconcile or mediate the situation. I enjoyed the Phil Collins and the Blueberry Barrel (pictured). The Sandia was ok for me, but not bad. My friend really liked the Smoked Papaya and presentation was fun like a science experiment. The smokiness brought out all of the notes of the liquor. I agree with some of the other reviews that the waiters were not as attentive as one would expect. Reservation process can be improved in my opinion. Glad we did ir and would go again, but for one cocktail and the experience.
Overpriced mediocre drinks with a cool presentation
This is a tough review to write and the score is a 3.5. The Aviary is about the experience, not the drink quality, per se. It’s about the presentation, the smells, the visual appeal, the timing, and the uniqueness - in those regards it is excellent and a once in a lifetime experience. What’s disappointing is the drink quality and cost. The five of us each had a 3 drink progression and we had one ala carte extra. Overall, we ordered 10 unique drinks. Three were superb (Wassuh bae, Smoked papaya, and Hermosa), but three were bad and had no flavor. The rest were mediocre at best, which was sad because a great presentation means little if the final product isn’t good. The truffle popcorn was meh but the focaccia were excellent. Given the $700 price tag and pretentiousness of everyone we encountered (except our designated server, who was very helpful and we really adored him), it overall was disappointing. The prices are outrageous for what you get. We also had to pay $500 over a month in advance to hold the table and because the 20% service charge does not go the server, we gave him a cash tip. Ultimately this is a very overpriced but cool, one time experience.
Tasty cocktails in artful glassware
It's so fun to watch each cocktail come out of the Mixologist's bar tending area. Some look like science experiments. I loved the Hermosa that came out smoky from a box and had hints of chocolate and orange. My favorite was the pineapple and rum cocktail that had gelatin rum balls floating inside that burst open in your mouth.

Prepaid Reservation Fee

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
