Testaccio Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
This place is way too full of itself.
I can't believe the ratings this "restaurant" has received. Is it all family members submitting reviews? I had the porchetta and it was so dry I had to ask for an extra glass of water to dip it in. Porchetta, done correctly, should be succulent. They should use this to replace the Kennedy. The Brussels sprouts were just smothered in balsamic. It's like they aren't even trying. There are plenty of good restaurants in Logan Square where your money will be better spent. Avoid.
5 stars for the kitchen! The food was really good.
The 3 star rating is for the overall experience. This was our first time dining here and expected a warmer welcome, instead of a professional (which is not a bad thing) and cold indifferent vibe (which is not welcoming). We go out to eat 2-3 times a week and a 200 dollar meal is not unusual for us. But, a real turn off is when a restaurant charges for bread which we did order for 10 dollars, and the staff clearing the table kept asking if we were done with it and wanted to take it away -- no multiple times! Also, when we ordered the artichokes, we were told there would be 3 artichokes and they could add 1 more if we liked. We were not told there would be a charge for it. We said sure and ultimately saw a charge on our bill for the 1 extra artichoke. As frequent diners out these types of things are a turn off and will keep us from returning to a restaurant. Note to those that want to have a romantic dinner or conversation when the restaurant is full you will have to almost shout because it gets really loud and the tables are close together.
This is a cute neighborhood spot.
When I walked in, I noticed how intimate yet lively the atmosphere was. The staff were also kind! There is no complimentary bread- I was bummed about this because I just love a restaurant that provides some sort of complimentary starter upon arrival- oh well! We went with the ravioli and carbonara, and the pepperoni pizza. I was most excited about the ravioli but it was just okay- I've had better raviolis in other spots. The carbonara was the standout item as that one was great and very creamy. For the pizza, it's Roman style so a bit thicker and I'd pass on this. Nice evening, but it was a spot that I wouldn't return to!
Nice neighborhood place.
Food is tasty, service also good. To me the portions were small relative to the prices. Service and flavors carry my rating, which would be 3.5 if it was possible.
Love the food here.
They change the menu seasonally and always have new things to try!!
Very accommodating of meatless and vegan preferences.
The staff was attentive and polite. The ambiance and layout (tables and bar) are good for solo diners, pairs, and basically anything short of a large group. I tried the mushrooms, bucatini, and fried calamari, in decreasing order of quality, from excellent to good.
delicious wine options and friendly, talented staff.
however, the food was underwhelming
I want to update my review.
Management responded to my review and efficiently reviewed the matter and provided a solution. The Testaccio team demonstrated integrity and fairness to resolve the mistake. I also want to add that service during dinner was very thoughtful and helpful. Last, I want to reiterate the lamb skewers were extraordinarily tasty.

You will really enjoy this restaurant!! Their burrata with tomato jam and crostini was terrific. I ate it with a very tasty sparkling rose. I highly recommend it..

Came here for the first time on a weekday evening for dinner with friends. We got very lucky. As far as free street parking was concerned less than a block away from the restaurant. Luckily, we made reservations as this place definitely fills up. The restaurant itself is very long, although not very wide it seems. So there's definitely sitting in the front and as you walk towards the back even more seating, which is fantastic. There's also seating outside. I am sure on the good days of weather. Our server was super friendly and highly tolerant of our party. Especially because our party was very inquisitive about the menu, items and the wine. They were very kind to send over a dessert to celebrate one of our friends birthdays. Overall, the menu items are very unique. For example, the fried artichokes, and the figs that came with the Panna cotta. Prices are definitely on the higher end. However, that is normal for this area as well as the competitors in the near vicinity. I will say the portions are good, but not generous. This is definitely not a family style sharing when it comes to the entrées but that is OK as we ordered an entrée each and we got to share at least a bite with each other. Ambience here is very modern yet clean and simple. The weight staff is very attentive to empty plates and removing and cleaning out the tables. This is a viable competitor for modern Italian food. Considering that Chicago is over saturated with Italian restaurants they definitely have a unique perspective and is worth trying out.
Nice Italian Place
Had a wonderful dinner here on a Friday evening. There are two separate sitting areas in the front near bar and the back. We sat close to the front and it was nice being away from the crowd. For appetizers, we had the Arrosticini (lamb), Baccala, and Artichokes. Enjoyed everything especially the Artichokes. Seems few places serve it. For the entrees, we shared the Cacio e Pepe, Wood Fired Mushrooms and Porchetta. It maybe the first time I've had Porchetta. I really like more of the outer fatty parts with the crunchy skin. The Pepe was simple but loved the firm fresh noodles. The service was very good.
