Absolutely amazing food.
Highly recommended. Nice and relaxing excitement, great service.

came here for a work dinner with an exec who loooooves this place. it was last minute dinner on a Tuesday night, almost empty, so i had zero expectations coming in. the sushi was excellent. so fresh, but also so inventive. they did a great job of starting with basics (yellowtail, tuna, etc.) and graduating to more adventurous fish and advanced sauces. i like that they were very clear with us which nigiri already had sauce and shouldn't be dipped. we had sake and beer too. the bill was reasonable for an omakase dinner. to be clear you aren't here for the ambiance -- you're here for quality fish.
Be the first to Reply4 of us ate here on 2/24/24.
The service was superb. The hostess and waitresses very pleasant and friendly. The fish was fresh and tasted good. The ambiance was just OK. Seems a bit outdated and felt like an old cafeteria. The reason for 2 stars is that the prices are outrageous for what you get. The sushi is not much different than other sushi restaurants and they attempt to present it as special. It was not. The total was $470 with tip. At a run of the mill sushi restaurant it would have been $200 at most. The meal was fixed but we could have orders a la carte with a 4 order minimum. In fairness to the restaurant, they do tell you in advance about the pricing. But, at that point you think you are getting something really special and it is not. I would consider going back If their prices were reduced by 2/3. I doubt that I will be going back however as I have found better value sushi at other restaurants
Be the first to ReplyI hate how good this place is.
My wallet can't take it. It's too pricey for everyday casual sushi, but I keep craving it. Truly a legit sushi place. The warm fluffy well seasoned rice and the tender, buttery fish. Of note their uni and sweet shrimp were so incredibly sweet, like a subtle whipped honey butter, so damn good. And so many places just can't execute on the fried shrimp head, but here they fry it to perfection in an edible presentation. I guess overall for the quality and location, it's appropriately priced. Nearby free parking lot and reservation capabilities is also a nice plus.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere and fresh sashimi.
My favorites were the Ikura , yellowtail and salmon belly. You can't go wrong here!
Be the first to ReplyThis is my wife and my goto restaurant for celebrations.
The omakase is amazing. I haven't even heard of some of the amazing fish that were served to us.

THIS PLACE WAS SO GOOD! Service was great, clean, sushi was amazing. Be prepared to spend but if you like good sushi then it's worth every penny.
Be the first to ReplyCannot express enough how much I love Sasabune.
I've been coming here for 25 years and have access to the very best sushi in cities around the world - this will always and forever be my number one.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service.
Amazing sushi! Not a commercial experience. Small but mighty space. I've been several time, it was amazing.

You wouldn't expect anything from a place that's right across the street from KFC, but this place is absolutely a hole-in-the-wall gem. One of the best sushi spots on the West Side no doubt. Their yellowtail is the best yellowtail I've ever had. I started with their abalone sashimi (which the waitress warned me that not many people that order it like it). I just ordered it cause I was interested! Definitely not for you if you like chewy, fishy texture. Favorites outside the yellowtail were the scallop, oyster & butterfish. Next time I'll have to come to try their omakase!
Be the first to ReplyCame here last month for omakase.
Maybe it was because i wasn't starved but I didn't want to finish the last two items of the set menu. I wish you could tailor the omakase so that you can get a little less and pay a little less. I'll only come back if I'm hungry. Quality of the sushi was very good and can't complain.

Omakase for people that want to impress their dates with a price tag. It's a bad sign when the waitress explains that I need to scoop up the sushi from the bottom because they make their sushi "soft." Rice is way too warm and that's why the sushi falls apart. Just a shameful experience for $150
Be the first to ReplyScreaming, crying and throwing up at how good this place is.
I would eat here every day if I could but I don't want to ruin the special moment that was my first experience at Sasabune. Every course was the best bite of food I've ever had. Left full but would of ate more if they presented it to me because it was that good.
Be the first to ReplyGood place for no frill sushi.
Very traditional. Prices are a little higher but quality makes up for it. My only issue was the sushi rice tasted dry and often times kept falling apart consistently despite trying different techniques to picking it up. Both my friend and I felt the same. Would probably try one of their other locations. Few pics as attached, nicely displayed.

The sushi chef knows what he is doing! The salmon is so fresh it melts in your mouth! Fav spot in LA! Hidden gem for sure!

Although it appears non descript the restaurant is quite decorative inside. Be aware this is a "traditional" Japanese sushi place so no Spicy tuna rolls or dynamite rolls (they even have a sign to remind you of this)In terms of the food you can order nigiri and cut rolls but the main draw is the lunch special and the Omakase menuFor a total of 5 dishes 2 of which are salad and miso soup, you have a minimalist lunch (at the time of this review $39), although the fish is fresh, if you are hungry you will need to do an In and Out run later!Omakase is $100 or $140 and the number of items depends on the chef's choices but always include soup/salad/ and a hand roll The service was quick, complementary to the food and done in a non-intrusive way. The decor is minimalist as well and pays homage to the chefs and aesthetic of the food Again fresh fish, good service but is lacking in real sustained way to "fill you up", will you have an enjoyable time ,Yes!

I set a business meeting at this restaurant because I heard it was quiet and the food was nice. We ordered the Japanese Omakase special and we really enjoyed it. Service is great and the ambience is quiet for a meeting. The sushi was awesome and very fresh. By the way, it is a lot of food and so you will be very very full when leaving after the Omakase. I will return because this was a very nice place.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good, but the hidden prices were laughable.
It has gone downhill, and that will be my last time there.
Be the first to ReplyI just got back from Japan and was trying to fill the void.
This place helped me fill it. Simple. Quality. Cent wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyIn A Nutshell:-This Sushi Sasabune location is superb.
-Like most reviews have already stated, this is a traditional Japanese restaurant.-One thing that sticks out is the sushi rice they serve w/ their nigiri is warm vs. cold.-The rice is very soft & delicious, which pairs w/ each piece of delicate sushi.-I highly recommend trying their omakase, where the chef will serve you the highlights of the day.-Expect to walk out full, which is always a good thing.-The omakase is enough for two people to share, so it's a perfect date night meal.- You should eat around 35 pieces of sushi according to my handy receipt.-Their Japanese non-caffeinated green tea is perfect on a cold, rainy day & you get tons of free refills.-The highlights we enjoyed were the Santa Barbara Uni, Blue Fin Tuna Toro, the Yellow Tail, the Monk Fish Liver, Salmon Roe Ikura, the Scallop in a half shell, the Mussel/Clam, the Kumamoto oysters & their Blue Crab Hand Rolls.-That's a lot of really good food served for a hearty chef's selection.-Due to the above, this place is $$$$.Overall, this place is worth going to if you are sushi aficionado who enjoys eating the finest seafood, slowly bite by bite.

We got the Omakase experience and we were not so happy, overpriced and sushi is ok, some are very delicious but overall too expensive and the ambiance is very mediocre.

The employees are strange, they employ many restrictions to limit your ordering capacity. We are playing checkers, they are playing chess. It is also expensive for raw fish. But sushi is fresh so that is good. Good.
Be the first to Replyidk what's harder than finding a last minute dinner
idk what's harder than finding a last minute dinner reservation for a quality sushi restaurant on a Monday night in la. but coming to sushi sasabune was a great success. quaint, traditional, no frills, and unassuming makes for an authentic japanese experience that my bf and i were delightfully surprised to have! (also my bf has lived in japan for years, even spent a few of his formative years in tokyo, and can confirm from his palate that this place is legit). we ordered a nice bottle of sake and he got the traditional omakase i got the standard omakase (not a big fan of uni so why pay for it ) and enjoyed every dish that was served looking forward to the next. the cuts of fish are fresh and well proportioned and well paired under the instruction of the waitstaff. i would like to remark tho for a couple of the pieces the rice was a bit on the heavier side, too warm so fell apart easily. overall a great experience for a special night of celebration!
Be the first to ReplyOmakase was completely off.
The rice was way too hot and fell apart almost immediately. The fish is cut far too thin for way too much rice. The quality was mediocre at best. Service was ok. Certainly not a place I'd come back to. Not even factoring the price, it's not even on par with a SUGARFISH. King sushi has a far better omakase. Will not be coming back.Update, stomach was off the next morning, reducing from two stars to one star. No redeeming quality of this place, never going back.
