As good as I remember it from back in the day.
Solid nigiri, sashimi, rolls. Very high quality and great service. Reservations are nearly impossible but worth trying.
Be the first to ReplyA million stars! Best sushi I've ever ever had.
It's in a very small unassuming parking lot across from a Planned Parenthood. I try to go every time I am in San Diego.
Be the first to ReplyDon't get me wrong, the fish is good.
I've tried Combo B and a bit of sashimi. But I do not understand the hype around this place. I've gone multiple times, and maybe I'd go again, but it's not the best I've ever had- not sure why I've heard so many people say it is. Btw, you gotta book your reservations at least a couple weeks in advance, and I've never seen a walk-in. The price of the combos are good, and the staff are really nice and professional. The seating area is also really calm, with beautiful lighting.
Be the first to ReplyBummer.
After taking a break from Sushi Ota because food quality had changed, we decided to give Sushi Ota another chance last night. We were disappointed.. again. The sushi rolls fell apart and the rice left a lingering vinegar taste. Their quality is way down AND their prices also went up since we were last there. I don't think we will return. We're sad. There was a time we craved this place :(
Be the first to ReplyThe best sushi I think I've had.
My dining partner, who has spent a lot of time in Japan, remarked that it was on par with what he experienced in Tokyo. The sushi and sashimi melts in your mouth -- absolutely incredible. I really enjoyed the caterpillar roll, which I normally don't order, but my dining partner did and I definitely will order it again. At other places it has seemed to me like a glorified california roll -- not the case at Ota. The eel really was apparent and the sauce drizzle was delicious. Even the soy sauce tasted really delicate -- not sure if they brew/ferment it themselves? In any case, I was impressed. Definitely make a reservation in advance! They book up quickly and several days out.
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommend you try this place.
Excellent options and the food is fresh. Staff was extremely attentive and friendly. Be prepared to wait or make reservations in advance. There is a reason it's busy. Very chic style made me feel like I was in Tokyo.
Be the first to ReplySpectacular ambience and service.
The sushi looked spectacular and tasted the same. My son said it was his favorite sushi so far and I have to agree.

I love sushi and this place had some good rolls but it was kind of a hit or miss. Some were delicious and others were subpar. We had to get a reservation and had high expectations because of all of the great reviews. Overall it was nice to experience once but we probably wouldn't come back unless it was a special occasion because the ambiance was very nice.

Everything we got was sooooo delicious, fresh, melt in your mouth. The scallop hand roll was the best scallop sushi I've ever had in my life. Already excited to go back.

Sushi Ota only serves melt in your mouth sushi with speedy and stellar service.Even for lunch, there was a race to nab a table at Sushi Ota. Definitely make a reservation in advance as they had a full house and line upon opening. The parking lot out front was smaller so I would come early to find a spot. I was immediately seated and my server Rika was super fast in taking orders and refills. =ORDERED=Our drinks and miso soup arrived within 5 minutes of ordering and the remaining food came out in 10 minutes.*Green Tea: arrived boiling hot and refills were done upon request. Earthy and unsweetened.*Miso Soup: came with our meal and served as the perfect warm starter on a rainy day. Heavier on the green onion topping.=SUSHI COMBO B=According to the menu it included tuna, yellowtail, toro, whitefish, cod, albacore, salmon, scallop, salmon egg, eel and tuna roll but I noticed that the cod was swapped out for negitoro gunkan instead. This set was best for tuna lovers as those pieces were the fattiest and thickest of them all. *Tuna: cut thickly and was tender but it was a tad fishy.*Yellowtail: was oily with subtle sweetness. Would have loved for some green onion on top.*Toro: not as fatty as other pieces I have tried but had an amazing mouthfeel. Not fishy in the slightest and I would order a row of these.*Whitefish: never has been my favorite as it is typically chewier and blander. Had a similar experience although the was softer than average.*Negitoro: always love a tuna substitute although the heads up would have been nice. The scooped tuna was on the colder side but the bit of green onion and seaweed made this one of my favorites. Elevated from the standard tuna.*Albacore: came with a smidge of yuzu on top that added some citrus and fragrance. Loved how this made the piece vibrant and distinct from the others, especially when everything prior was simply fatty.*Salmon: cut on the thinner side and I wasn't as impressed by the quality in comparison to the previous pieces. Still fatty but average overall.*Scallop: pillowy texture with minimal flavor. Personally found it to be on the colder side and would have preferred it closer to room temperature. Wished the sweetness could have been enhanced with a drop of ponzu.*Salmon Egg: piled high with thick balls that oozed salty seafood flavor.*Eel: a generous cut coated in sweet unagi sauce. Had a flakey texture and some resistance when bitten into. Good towards the end since the sauce was robust.*Tuna Roll: adorable tiny maki rolls that had a greater fish ratio to rice. Since there was less rice, I enjoyed the pure tuna flavor with the seaweed wrapper. Came full circle from the simple, lean tuna. The quality of seafood was undeniable although I found the rice to be the weakest component of our meal. The rice had a propensity to crumble which ruined the overall mouthfeel. Considering the fish was so fatty, it would have been better if the rice was seasoned more. With the rising prices for sushi everywhere in SD, I found Sushi Ota to be worth the hype and reasonably priced for the quality received. Sushi Ota was very straightforward in terms of presentation but can't go wrong with well sourced and made sushi. I will definitely return for the lunch sets as I found the experience to be better than the $50+ sets elsewhere.

Tastes like convenience store sushi in Japan. The tempura was okay. I'm very surprised about the rating

One of the best sushi spots in San Diego! We ordered the Salmon Dynamite, Chu toro nigiri, double double spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna hand roll, and sashimi salad. We picked it up to go and it was still amazing. All the fish was super fresh. The place is definitely worth the price. Can't wait to eat at the restaurant.

I came here for my birthday and our reservation was at 1:30 but got seated at around 2. They were extremely busy and the staff wasn't that attentive or nice as well as service. We were served by this young boy who seemed to not want to be there and didn't really check on us, asked for a straw twice, and were also served by 2-3 other servers. It just seemed very disorganized HOWEVER the sushi was pretty damn good. Very fresh and delicious which is why I'm giving it 3 stars. Only thing is the sushi is very expensive. Would I come back ? Probably not. For me I think service is extremely important in feeling welcomed and pleased. I've been to other sushi restaurants with great service and great raw fresh fish.

Service, quality and experience is always consistent! Known for higher price, but in this case the knowledge you can return for the same overall quality is well worth it.

Best sushi I've ever had! The wait is usually very long, but it's definitely worth it.Their fish is very fresh!
Be the first to ReplyQuite expensive but pretty, pretty good sushi.
Fresh fish and tender rice.Good service (not necessarily the best but good enough)Building is a little bit old and the restaurant interior is not that nice but is OK.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic sushi, sashimi, rolls, entrees, and service.
The yellowtail in the 2x2x2 sashimi was especially amazing along with the salmon. This was my first time trying uni and I'm glad I tried it here as it was like eating sweet cream with no fishy essence whatsoever. Looking forward to coming back and trying the kinme and other fish.

My husband took me here for our anniversary since I love sushi and this place is a little more expensive than our other favorite (sushi deli). But it really is the best quality and I'm so happy to be able to go in and be seated and have a nice sushi dinner again. If you love sushi you really should go here at least once and nevermind the bill!
