Sumika Los Altos Reviews from The Last Year

Sumika is a wonderful izakaya, Japanese bistro-esque restaurant that my family and I frequent often. We usually order their agedashi tofu, their salmon and yellowtail hand rolls (dinner only) and their tsukune and wagyu beef skewers. I also love their clam miso soup, the momo and green onion skewers, and their miso eggplant.

Strongly recommend making a reservation in advance, even for a weekday night, as it's a small space that fills up fast. - SUMIKA SALAD (chicken breast, cabbage, cherry tomato, fried wonton, original peanut oil dressing; $16): Really enjoyed the different flavors and textures in this - OYAKO-DON (chicken thigh cooked in egg sauce over rice; $18): This was tasty, with tender, charcoal-grilled chicken. They warn you about the raw egg yolk when ordering, which gives the dish a bit of a viscous texture, but the runny egg mixes well with the rice and makes for a simple but comforting dish . The bowl is fairly small, but with the rice still feels like one of the more filling and better value dishes - TSUKUNE (chicken meatball) SKEWER ($5): This was surprisingly flavorful and more seasoned than I was expecting - MOMO (thigh) WITH GREEN ONION SKEWER ($5): This one was a little less seasoned and not a particularly interesting flavor especially for the price, but still quite tender The yakitori offers fun variety, but isn't particularly filling and adds up fast. Next time I'd probably try out more of the appetizers or come back for a lunch set
Friday night dinner.
Excellent service, Superb quality of the food. Authentic Izakaya. The exhibition charcoal grill fueled with Japanese style briquets [charcoal tree branches], is a sight to behold. The food, is close to authentic Japanese. A popular joint that Japanophiles have discovered and frequent.
This place is perfect for lunch .
... I always get the oyakodon (literally "parent child bowl") with chicken and eggs over rice in a bowl. Get the eggs runny. My partner got the tonkatsu bento, which was also amazing. Ver nice dark feeling like in a basement in Japan. Very authentic. Service was kind and efficient.

One of the best Izakayas I have been to so far! Must make a reservation as they do not have many seats inside. It is quite small and intimate so if you are considering a walk in, best to go early! The menu is not too large but has a very good variety of things to choose from. You can't go wrong with any of their skewers as they are all pretty good. We ordered a couple of apps, grilled meat, one of the dons, and dessert. One notable thing is that all the items that we ordered came at the same time so that was nice to eat all at once. The dessert we asked for them to bring after we were done. Fried Garlic (5/5): given plenty, goes great with any of the skewers and perfectly fried to give the garlic a slight crunch Dashimaki Tamago with Mentaiko (5/5): must get if you like tamago and Mentaiko, a very unique but delicious way to make tamago Oyako Don (5/5): the sauce they smother the chicken with over rice while mixed with egg is worth all the hype they receive, another recommendation when coming here Black Sesame Panna Cotta (5/5): very rich but not too sweet, has perfect amount of red bean to pair with the Panna Cotta

Located in the heart of Los Altos, by the parking lot, this area already exudes joy even on the walk there. At lunchtime, they serve skewers, each with unique flavors. The restaurant was nearly full, so the wait for food was a bit longer, and the water/tea refills weren't immediate. The overall experience was wonderful, thanks to the welcoming staff.

The place reminds me of small, family owned restaurants in the alleyways in Tokyo. No flashing signs or lights...you almost walk right by without noticing it's there. However, once inside, you realize that this place is special. It's bustling with tables filled with hungry, happy diners. The food looks amazing, the grill smells delicious and the service is so warm and inviting. I was dining with a friend and was so impressed I had to bring my husband the next day. Everything we ordered was outstanding...Maguro Don, Wagyu Sirloin Steak, Udon with Vegetable Tempura and Shishito Peppers. Can't wait to try more of their grilled options.

I love this place! I think about their fried chicken way too much. The Sumika salad is very much worth ordering. I've had the chicken and rice dish, many many times.

I went to this restaurant at 5:30 and there were already 3 groups of line. Very authentic Japanese restaurant. I have had Oyako-don for lunch before and it was very good so I came back for dinner this time. We ordered some skewers and miso eggplant. Eggplant was so juicy and good flavor of miso on top.
Valentine's Day dinner with my wife.
..I wonder why they took reservations at 7:45pm when they close at 8pm and by 8:10pm came to our table and told us the kitchen was shutting down?! Food was subpar for Japanese cuisine, cuts of sashimi weren't great, and the wagyu beef was full of hard grizzle and tendon. Another bad cut of the meat. The tea and clam miso were boiling, and I mean boiling hot...if they don't want people coming in "later" meaning 7:45pm for dinner, hen they should shut down then. Horrible experience. Very disappointed.

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
