A Must Do EXPERIENCE
On our final night in London, and vowing to stop and go here on every Euro Trip, my wife and I feasted on some very unique fares. I had the blood cake and she had the deviled calf kidneys. Started off with the bone marrow app. First time enjoying nose to tail dining. This is the place! Very helpful staff. To get to our menu choices we asked for a description on some of our candidate choices. Choices indeed! There. Said it 3 times. We were unprepared for what we heard. From ingredients to cooking temp to every detail of the process from kitchen to plate to table. Excellent! Check this place out. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyMichelin but not pretentious
It may sound like an oxymoron, but an unpretentious Michelin restaurant. I had a business lunch and it was great. The atmosphere is more like a bistro than a formal dining room, the service was efficient and formal rather than pretentious. I started with the brown crab, which was nice but the star was the saddleback, pork loin cooked a little pink. It was flavorful, tender, as good as can be. An enjoyable restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThe most relaxed star meal I’ve ever had!
St John was honestly the most chilled Michelin experience I’ve ever had. The setting is brilliant, it’s 100 mile an hour with all the staff zipping about the place, it’s great to see such a different type of restaurant to the usual white table cloth, quiet Michelin spots you become accustomed too. Another thing that I’d never seen before was the coat racks around the room, normally coats are ushered off to a dark room but here they’re hung where you eat, not in the way, not a problem, just something really different. We had the Crispy pig skin for a shared starter which was just the best pork scratching that I’ve ever had. I also had their signature Roasted Bone Marrow on toast, one of the best starters I’ve ever eaten. My wife had the Duck Pate, nice but nothing we’d not had before. I also would encourage everyone to try the Rarebit, blew my mind! The mains were where I really appreciated how relaxed the place was. I ordered the Teal Duck and was encouraged to use my hands to really get all the meat off the bone. At first I was a bit skeptical but looking around and seeing other people doing it I got stuck in! My wife had crispy pig cheek for her main and again it was incredible, so filling too. Dessert was my favourite dish of the evening, I had the Buttermilk Pudding which came with the most incredible rehydrated figs. They gave a real mulled wine, cinnamon flavour when paired with the creamy dessert absolutely knocked my socks off. My wife had the Ginger loaf and butterscotch sauce, far too rich for me but she loved it. I’d been meaning to come to St John for years before I eventually made the booking, I’m just gutted that I’d not been there sooner!
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful restaurant experience at all levels
St John is special, and it's been special ever since I first came to the restaurant in the 1990s. Few restaurants get all these things right - food, service, and atmosphere - but St John does. The food is the best of British: a bit quirky, imaginative, and incredibly tasty. The service is sublime - you don't get this type of service anywhere else in London - attentive, but not overly so. You feel the waiters/waitresses could sit down with you and enjoy the meal with you. They're at the same level as you - and just really nice. The atmosphere in the impressive whitewashed former smokehouse is buzzing with people enjoying themselves - and the great food. This place is an institution. How many restaurants in London have been going for 30 years and consistently been offering all the above? Few if any. I hope to return to this wonderful place for many years yet...
Be the first to ReplyMeat heaven.
A paradise for meat lovers. At first you wonder if it's old, but then you feel ashamed when you see the service and food. I suggest you prepare yourself for this feast by going early and sipping your beer at the bar.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal away from the busy tourist spots of London in quiet clerkenwell
Great find off the beaten track. Looks like some garage but wow the food was delicious. Many meat based dishes..we were four and shared many...all were great.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Dining Experience!
Wow! I am a bit late in writing this review, but my goodness, I am still thinking about this restaurant and my experience eating here. The restaurant atmosphere is very hip, with a bit of industrial meets "meat." I was a bit late arriving due to traveling into the UK from the EU that day and had a minor delay, but the bartender kept my coworker engaged in pleasant conversation. From the moment we sat down, we had such high levels of friendly service all the way to the end of our meal service. The food was really amazing. We shared the potted pork on toast (I still think of this) and the bone marrow with parsley salad (yum). My coworker ordered something I can't say I would expect to see on a menu in the US but there it was...lamb's liver. He said it was sweet and delicious tasting. I ordered the Guinea fowl that was so good I went cavewoman style by picking it up to eat every morsel off the bones. We ordered a couple of sides including the Jersey potatoes. ...and that bread served before the meal was so delicious. I love that this restaurant has its own winery and we enjoyed the Claret with our meal. For dessert, I tried something very unique, which was the gooseberry ice cream, and my co-worker had the ginger loaf. The gooseberry was sweet-tart and really unique. The ginger loaf was just as you'd expect - dense, sweet, and delicious. We finished the meal with a 20-year Dow port. It was a great experience, and I would definitely pop into London to eat a meal at this place again.
Be the first to ReplyStill great food but slipping standards
Full disclosure - I adore St John - I have eaten here many, many times over the years, for birthdays, client lunches, even for New Year's Eve. The menu is consistently exciting as it (normally) is well-executed (more on this later on). The reason for the review however is a general sense of slipping standards over the past 3-4 years that are becoming more and more noticeable. As I say, the food is generally excellent. Yesterday I had potted pork on toast to start, a rustic, how-it-should-be pate with plenty of flavour and offset brilliantly with pickled cucumber. Good start then. Then things went up a level with the gurnard dish I had next. My word, perfectly cooked Gurnard, served whole, with a light dressing of caper vinaigrette, with a few fried croutons. Genuinely brilliant cooking and concept, which made the latest trip more than worthwhile and went very well with the 2020 St John white burgundy. Pudding was profiteroles with pouring chocolate sauce which was fine - well executed but the ice cream was too cold and not hugely flavourful. I generally don't have pudding at lunch time but as am doing the Zoe app thing and was interested in how pudding would affect my blood sugar (oddly it went down significantly - eh?). So all, in all, my lunch there was very, very good. However...I mentioned slipping standards. The waiter wasn't the best. Usually we have very good service here which makes it all the more noticeable when the service isn't great. This is more likely to be a one off but we will keep an eye on it. When ordering sides, we noticed that the ox tongue dish came with chips (often a ploy at St John, if they think they may struggle to shift a more challenging dish, they will put it with chips - last time we were here it was tripe and chips). We asked if we could have some chips with our main courses instead of boiled new potatoes. Most restaurants of this quality would have been able to do this no question, no problem. Our request was dismissed out of hand, saying they would likely not have enough chips for the ox tongue orders. Statistically this is enormously unlikely, and as it happens we didn't see anyone else order ox tongue while we were there (no huge surprise given it was the most challenging dish on the menu that day). We saw this as a needless denial. Generosity seems to be thin on the ground here these days, and sadly has been for years. The roast bone marrow and parsley salad, a stone cold classic, has gone from four bones to now sometimes two, which can barely produce enough marrow to cover the piece of toast you get with it. At the New Year party I mentioned at the top, they hadn't provided enough potatoes with the main course for even one each, and when more were requested this was denied at first. Staggering really. This was sorted in the end, but further proof of the point. Back to yesterday and my friend ordered date pudding, as ever exactly the kind of thing you would hope to see on the menu at St John, and wouldn't expect to find it in many other places. The pudding was good, but the butterscotch sauce was quite badly burnt. When sending this back, we were told "this is how we do it, as it adds the necessary bitterness". Fair enough in theory but if they tasted that sauce and were happy with it I would be very, very surprised. It was hugely bitter, and burnt, overwhelming the flavour of the pudding and ruining the pudding. And why this wasn't explained to us before ordering, that the sauce would be burnt, I don't know. You can't expect people to know that a butterscotch sauce would taste like that, so either tell us on the menu, or tell us when we order. Don't wait for us to complain then tell us that is "how you do it". Which as I say I doubt they tasted before serving. I have never seen this attitude here before, and I have discussed dishes regularly as most diners would with a menu of the quality that St John produces. But there was a different feel to this, again our feedback was dismissed out of hand in a dismissive, even haughty way which is generally catastrophic for business. So a nasty taste left in the mouth, in more ways than one, and a genuine fear that things are slipping. The food generally is still amazing and you should go here if you can but I fear things are not as great as some staff think they are, and certainly not quite what it was in its pomp.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and lovely building
Fabulous wedding reception. We met with lots of family and friends to celebrate Sophie and Joe's wedding. The place was amazing. Set on various levels. We were greeted by friendly staff with fizz or elderflower. There was a lovely atmosphere and room to mill about! The food was amazing. I have never had food like it when somewhere is catering for so many people. Crab, the most tender beef ever and homemade doughnuts that made me proclaim like I was Prue Leith! The bar had a great range of beers, wine and spirits. I like a g and t and as well as Tanqueray they had a gin I have never heard of (obviously I had to try it...it would be rude not to and it was delicious *Hepple Gin*). We danced into the night with amazing Welsh Rarebit and other snacks to give us energy. What a place. The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was sublime and the atmosphere chilled but fun. If you get to go..indulge yourself you won't be sorry..
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed
Really disappointed. Been to St John's a few years back (pre pandemic ) and it was my husband's favourite. This time popped in for bar snacks and drinks. The wine was lovely but the food not so. Samphire, leeks and watercress well cooked but massively overdressed with oil/butter so felt really greasy. Welsh Rarebit was bland in taste and no where near as nice as ones we had there previously. arrived so quickly it felt like It had just been kept warm under the grill. The bread and butter was beautiful but just felt the rest of the food was really lacking compared to previous experience.
Be the first to ReplyFor a delicious rediscovery of British cuisine
Enticed by the premise of "snout to tail eating" we decided to try St JOHN. We had the highest of expectations, knowing the fame and having esteem towards chef Fergus Henderson. I have to say, our expectations were exceeded. The quality of the food was supreme, and the skill and creativity behind each dish left us speechless. For the first time at an establishment that boasts serving true British cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised, and definitely impressed. The menu changes every day, which is a sign of the reliance on availability of different offal on the day. We had the devilled kidneys, lamb heart served in aioli, and the crispy pig's cheek. I couldn't tell you which one was my favourite: they were all supreme. For a starter, two hearty mains, 2 drinks, a cocktail, dessert and 2 coffees we paid just under a hundred. Absolutely well worth every penny, and with truly amazing service.
Be the first to ReplyTrying too hard
Really disappointing experience. We shared starters around the table and only one dish really made any impact - the pork cheek. The mains were mostly disappointing too. I had saddleback which really was just two slices of pork with some tender stem broccoli over flavoured with mustard. Nothing outstanding in that! Probably could have made this at home. Not what I’d expected from the hype. Wouldn’t recommend, won’t be going back.
Be the first to ReplyA real treat
I was here for my fiftieth birthday and it proved a memorable occasion. We ate early (6.30) but the restaurant was already filling up and had a good atmosphere. Our waiter, James, was simply brilliant. From recommending cocktails to suit our taste and pocket, everything he did enhanced the experience. The food was awesome. Bone Marrow and Mutton Rissoles for starters were deeply flavoured and tasted amazing. Eel and Rabbit for mains were brilliant and the Eccles Cake and Cheese was memorable, caramelized and delicious. House wine was reasonably priced and very gluggable. One of the nicest and best dining experiences I have had.
Be the first to Replydisappointing
Went to this restaurant following a glowing Giles Coren Times review but it failed to achieve . Style over substance .The room is nice: the staff and service excellent .But the menu dishes were ill conceived .Either the proprietor or the chef are just trying too hard to be innovative and edgy and from what we ate its just not working .The deconstructed rarebit ..deep fried... is a mess of a dish and really should be avoided : the baby gem and skate [obviously ray not skate which says something about attention to detail] with capers and dill was perfectly nice but completely unexciting : and the oxtongue with horseradish was also adequate but rather over rich .The bread, cheese and madeleines were fine ..Should have been a lot better

A lovely delicious experience in the heart of Farringdon. Would recommend most dishes but the bone marrow of course stands out as one of the best.

Gorgeous, stylish but also so down to earth- not a bad word to say. Menu was incredible yet super simple. We had the roasted bone marrow and peach sorbet to finish. Customer service was slick and effortless. Atmosphere was relaxed - nothing pretentious about this Michelin restaurant. Can’t wait to return
Be the first to ReplyExceptional, particular, meticulous and delectable.
I struggle to find the words for this superb restaurant. The menu was astounding. Completely different to anything I'd expected. The plates were so simple yet profoundly impressive. Staff and clientele were wonderful. This is the most down-to-earth Michelin restaurant I've ever been to. Worth saving up to go here if you don't have much money.

We had a beautiful meal here. The pigs cheek was a delicious starter. We had hake and duck for the man and we both loved them. We shared madeleines for dessert (half dozen) which were freshly baked and very light. The service was simple and unobtrusive. We got some sides which were very simple and probably the only aspect which wasn’t special but overall a great meal and would come back.

Went as a group of 4 for lunch. Great service and incredible food. Extensive wine list which includes lots reasonably priced bottles. Staff were attentive but never in the way. Had wanted to go here for a long time - it more than lived up to our expectations. Would recommend the bone marrow starters and pig cheek main.
Be the first to ReplyGood quality food and unusual menu
This restaurant is opposite our office. I’d seen it a few times - quite understated frontage and inside simple no frills decor. However, it’s the food that speaks for itself. There is a really good aperitif selection and the menu is unusual and pricey - that said it was worth it. I had a pastis appetitive, Welsh rarebit and seed cake with Madeira for dessert. The Welsh rarebit was 1 slice of their home made sour dough with a delicious malty cheesy topping - this was £9 and the seed cake was a really moist, buttery and light Madeira with caraway seeds - the glass of Madeira was a good paring. This was £11. Considering the quality of the food, I didn’t mind paying. Will definitely be back to try the other delicacies on the menu. Also I want to mention that’s the staff here are very friendly and attentive
Be the first to ReplyGnaw Away at St John
With just a few days in London we were recommended St John for excellent British fare. I’m not a huge fan of traditional British food so was a tad nervous. I should not have been. The menu offered excellent variety with the traditional staple, and the food was light and easily shareable. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the bone marrow. The matching suggested wines from France were perfect. Highly recommend and will return!

A legendary restaurant for very, very good reason. So simple, but so good. Get the bone marrow and get the mince!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food + Great Service
My husband and I treated ourselves with four restaurants with Michelin stars for our honeymoon, and we found St. John's service to be the most personable and memorable. Our server (and/or chef since he was wearing chef's white coat) was very patient with explaining their dishes. He was also fun to chat with. We ordered crispy pig skin, roast bone marrow, pig's head and braised lamb. All four were delicious, but we loved the pig's head dish the most (a nice tanginess from the green sauce, and the meat just melts in your mouth). We were seated next to a table of 10+ men who were there for a bachelor party. The group got a little rowdy (naturally) as the night went on. We didn't mind too much since it was fun to people watch during our vacation. However the server/chef was very apologetic and explained that the restaurant ambient normally was calmer and quieter. They surprised us with fresh-off-the-oven madeleines as an apology. The madeleines were delicious!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals I’ve ever had
First of all, I love the philosophy at St. John where they don’t believe in waste in which carcass to meat inspires the dishes; majority of the menu is built on ingredients in season so the menu changes adding variety; and their passion to cook simple, yet delicious British cuisine. Although it’s “back to the basics” inspired, it doesn’t taste that simple, I can assure you! I ordered the bone marrow and parsley salad to start, the braised rabbit special for my main course, and the date bread pudding with butterscotch sauce for dessert. The staff was very friendly and assisted me in finding the perfect wine pairing for each dish. Even though I was alone I was treated just as important as the tables with more guests, and I appreciated how one of the chefs came out to explain the philosophy of St John to me and how to properly eat the marrow so I could eat it in the way it’s meant to be enjoyed. Easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life! It was also fun to compare these meals to ones I grew up with. Although I’m not British, I grew up in a community in Alaska where we heavily relied on a subsistence lifestyle due to our remote location. I grew up eating deer and elk bone marrow as well as rabbit so I loved trying these dishes in the British style (although it was veal marrow at St John). I deeply recommend this place. I will come here every time I’m in London in the future!
Be the first to ReplyFine experience, but….
We came for lunch because I’ve been craving their roasted bone marrow with parsley salad on toast with salt. We sat inside where the tables have white tablecloths, but the simplicity of the outdoor seating was very attractive, and their menu was probably preferable for my girlfriend who found it difficult to find a dish she wanted. She ended up with their roasted pork with endive and a delicious sauce. I was blown away by the bone marrow toast. It was unctuous, complex in its simplicity, and primal. Service, unfortunately, was not at all good, really. There seemed to be a haughty air to most of the servers, except the only female there, and our waiter simply disappeared, never checking on us or having any interest in our experience. That aspect was a distraction.
