Food pairings clashed-nothing spectacular.
Had a few add-ons. Felt like they tried to hard and missed the mark. Service friendly but erratic. Compared to many restaurants in the city not worth it. A very disappointing experience all the way around. Won't return.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is outstanding and the service is very good.
My only reason for not awarding five stars is the lack of non-alcoholic beverage options beyond soda and water. It's 2024, and given the plethora of non-alcoholic alternatives now available, it's disappointing that such a reputable restaurant overlooks guests who choose not to drink alcohol, a growing trend. A suggestion for management: offering even just one or two non-alcoholic options (like non-alcoholic beer or mocktails) would ensure guests don't feel limited to just water for the entire meal.

Came here for the tasting menu after seeing good reviews, but left extremely disappointed. We did the tasting menu for 2, with a few add-ons and a wine pairing; our final bill after tax and tip was about 800. The opening courses were interesting and there were a few great dishes. Towards the end though we noticed the flavor profiles felt extremely repetitive and many dishes were overly salty. The entrees were also questionable; the bass and add-on BBQ duck were extremely overcooked. The lamb was decent but wasn't anything interesting. The waitstaff was very attentive throughout the night, but dropped a used utensil on one of our coats and didn't give us any additional napkins to clean up the oil stains I think for a lower price point, Sorrel would be a good place to revisit, but we left extremely disappointed overall and feeling like we got robbed.

I went to Sorrel yesterday for the second time, and it never disappoints! The atmosphere, the service, and above all, the food were just perfect. Not only is the food presented perfectly, but it also tastes even better. My favorite dishes were definitely the oysters and the passion fruit dessert, both fresh, light, tasty, and just amazing. One of my favorite restaurants: highly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommended by those who know what that means.
The location, vibe, service, and quality are exceptional
Be the first to ReplyFood was good but not amazing.
For the $200 price tag, I was bit surprised by use of generally inexpensive ingredients (cabbage dish with XO sauce, dashi broth with mushrooms, etc). Dungeness crab pasta included only tiny amount of crab, and final course was a quarter filet of branzino (branzino for winter tasting menu?). Portions quite small even considering it was a tasting . Also a bit odd that a whole loaf of bread was brought halfway through the meal, with 4 types of butter. To ensure guests don't leave hungry? The highlight was the service. Very professional and never intrusive. All in all a good experience but not exactly for the food.

The food is dreamy and amazing!! Romantic ambiance, top class service! Some of the best seafood and vegetarian dishes I have tasted in a while!
Be the first to ReplyThis review is only for the customer service.
I spent $775 dollars in advance to reserve this restaurant for Valentine's Day and a birthday. My wife got sick 3 days in advance, but unfortunately they were closed the first two days. I tried to call and reschedule, but the person who answered the phone said there was nothing they could do and I would have to forfeit the whole amount. I was willing to eat some of the cost, but not a good look for a restaurant that is supposed to cater to the customer who is spending a lot of money and in my case not something I do except on a few special occasions. We did not go in and ended up paying for the whole thing.

This review was almost a 4-star because of the beginning of our night, but the food speaks for itself and it's truly unreal; the food alone deserves 5 stars and more. We were about 20 minutes late to our reservation and they had given our table away by the time we arrived. This honestly put a bad taste in my mouth because: 1) we called them continuously from approximately 8:12pm until 8:48 (our reservation was at 8:30 and we were stuck in heavy traffic driving through SF on Lunar New Year -- I checked my phone after dinner and I made a total of 20 calls to them between that period of time) and not one single person picked up the phone. I understand being busy, but not picking up a single call between 20-30 minutes makes no sense; 2) I've never been to any high end restaurant (or Michelin starred establishment, for that matter) that doesn't call before giving a table away; and 3) their reservation site or email doesn't say anything about grace periods (or anything helpful at all, really), which is sorta stressful. Anyways.. We made it there. Waited for a little while and got seated, so we let it go. My partner has been trying to take me to Sorrel since the before the pandemic. We've made multiple reservations but something had always come up that made us/them cancel so I've been eager to eat here for a while. We finally made it last night for an early valentines dinner and I couldn't be happier with the dining experience. We started off with the maitake potato dashi which was really good. It was so flavorful and umami, I could have eaten a whole bowl of that and been happy with my evening. Next up was the buñuelo, which was just alright. This was probably my least favorite item on the menu. I just didn't like the taste of the sweet and savory combination so I could have gone without this dish. Very pretty tho! We then received sourdough focaccia with different kinds of butter -- the bread wasn't on the menu but man was it a pleasant surprise. The honey butter was the best butter I've ever tasted in my life. I wanted to take a whole batch of that home with me. Again, if this was the only item on the menu, I'd be ecstatic. Next up: tortellini. Mine was vegetarian while my partner got the regular dungeness crab. I got mine with fresh black truffle and it was so so good! It brought a delicious, earthy flavor to an already very flavorful pasta dish but none of the flavors clashed and it delicious. What's interesting is that my first bite wasn't that good, but with each bite of the dish, it got better and better. What's great is that it was also very filling considering the other items were on the smaller side. Next we received our entrees; my partner got the branzino and I got the vegetarian option which was celeriac. I didn't know what to think of this because I had never tried celeriac before, but the chef brought it out to show me what they'd be cooking it in and it looked like an actual dinosaur egg. It was really good - granted I have nothing to compare it to but it was a good dish. Rather small compared to my partners fish, but I also don't know how much of it I'd have been able to eat if it was any larger. We then got a palette cleanser that they called a "pre-dessert." I have absolutely no clue what was in it, but I can still taste it and it tasted phenomenal. It tasted like salted caramel gelato on crushed cookies of some kind? I don't know but I'd eat 10 of them if I had the option. Last up was the actual dessert and it was truly out of this world. I've never had anything like it. The flavors melted together so well - it was so delicate and creamy, not too sweet but sweet enough to know you're eating a dessert. I truly wish we could have ordered some of it to go, that's how good it was. Afterwards, they brought us some little sweets to end the evening. I think one of them was a dark chocolate and the other was some kind of gummy? I'm forgetting because at this point I was in a food coma, but needless to say, this meal went above and beyond. The verdict is in: Sorrel is worth the hype. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyThe food here is incredible and it's definitely fine dining.
We've come twice and have loved each dish every time. It does kind of seem like staff aren't very kind but maybe they can sense I'm not a millionaire. Either way, I come for the food and it's delicious. Their house bread is out of this world, Maybe you're into the "I'm high society" vibes, then it's for you!
Be the first to ReplyFood, service, and atmosphere - impeccable.
Wine pairing with each dish was on point. Great place for a special occasion.

Food was delicious, and staff was very accommodating to dietary restrictions. However, I have to knock a star off for the entree. I ordered the fish dish, and it was very underwhelming and not the star of the show. My partner ordered the wagyu, and it was good but not great. The appetizers and snacks were much more exciting. Cannot emphasize enough how good the caviar cheesecake was!
Be the first to ReplyMy partner and I went to the winter tasting menu.
Our experience was inspiring of all senses, from the beauty of the interior to the conceptual and artistic culinary presentation to the food itself. The dishes were truly novel and outstanding in taste and appearance. Waitstaff (who were also the chefs?? Truly doing EVERYTHING) were attentive, kind, and seemed to genuinely care about the experience they were creating. I'd never experienced fine dining in this way, and Sorrel was a beautiful introduction to the genre. Our night was magical, and I hope to return someday.

Why do prices have to double, literally, when place gets a star? Not only that, but now we have no choice but to go by what's on the tasting menu versus ordering what we want. It's frustrating, and I'm sad to leave this review, but I'm also sad this place is not really accessible anymore. I used to look forward to Michelin's yearly updates, but now it's just a plague when a local spot gets a star because all that happens is the price doubles, reservations become a pain, quality might even go down, and you have to find a new place. Ugh.
Be the first to ReplyAmbiance and services are excellent.
But I don't think the food quality really matches the price point and the setup. Nothing is really memorable other than the hard to chew tendon in the duck breast. Worth trying but I won't come back

I celebrated my birthday here and had such a good experience. The food has an Asian fusion touch which i absolutely love. The service is great and the ambiance is casual and upbeat. There are plenty of food to take you through an amazing food journey while filling you up. This is one of the best Michelin experiences I had including three stars ones.

We live in the neighborhood and pass by every day, so eventually we had to try it. It is beyond our budget, but we made it work. Though we knew it had a michelin star, it was fancier than we thought - very fun.The service was excellent, and the ambience even nicer than we expected from the outside and location; the decorations and blend of feel were romantic, soothing, and really interesting. The wine options were excellent, and the pairing suggestions too, though the way the som presented was very green. It is bizarre to say that the best course was the bread course. We laughed when the waiters announced the bread course with such pride. But it was deserved. It may be the best thing i have ever eaten in my life. It was perfect: focaccia bottom with sourdough top, crisp, salty, umami, beyond words. I remember this creation better than any michelin star course i've had.The rest of the meal was not very flavorful. Everything was gorgeous, and the textures were on point, but the tastes themselves were very subdued. We are grateful for the experience but won't be coming back. I'd happily pay $50 for another loaf of that bread tho...
Be the first to ReplyThe location is amazing.
I have visited Sorrel before, and it always matches the standard. Food and service is incredible-- for $165, you can enjoy their course menu of about 8 courses with some "surprises" along the way. I will always, always, and always, recommend adding the duck ($65 for about 2 people worth portion). The duck here is perhaps one of the best ducks I have ever had: crispy skin, delicious jú, and perfect cooked meat all balances creating a wonderful bite. Definitely a place for a date or special occasion, but the cozy yet vibrant and elegant atmosphere will definitely pay off!10/10 would recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThird time to Sorrel.
..we love it. Their most recent tasting menu had some unexpected surprises. Highlights: - Some of the opening snacks, like the quail egg and roe - the smoky octopus - the piramide - the Wagyu beef striploin (melted like butter)- dry-aged duck with honey and fennel, a Sorrel classic- sommelier suggestions with each phase of the meal: dry sparkling wine, Cailbourdin Sauvignon Blanc and Failla Pinot Noir- the desserts were SO FUN - mini ice cream cone, lime marshmallow with Pop Rocks (yes, you heard me, POP ROCKS!), and pumpkin mousse with caramel-like yumminess at the bottom of an egg shell - apologies to the dessert chef, for my descriptions. The Snowball in a golden bowl was a sight to visually consume. You really need to just go and try it all yourself. The menu changes about every six weeks, so take the last critique FWIW. The menu overall seemed to be heavy on the seafood, especially early on. The earthy soups we had on previous visits might be something to bring back. Maybe I just didn't get it, but the halibut was underwhelming to me; I suggest getting the striploin instead. We appreciated that the chefs served the food to tables also; everyone working together felt like a well-functioning team.

4.5 starsGreat tasting menu here. Very busy here. I added the spaghetti chitarra with truffles that was quite good but not worth the price. My favorites were the winter salad and all the pastas. The halibut was also quite moist and tender.
Be the first to ReplyMade a reservation for 3 people for dinner.
My husband got ill and could not attend the dinner. Despite the explanation and the fact that the dinner was $700+ for the 2 of us attending, they did not wave $65 penalty for my husband not coming due to his illness. I find this ridiculous. Because of this penalty, charging $65 for nothing- (less than 10% of the bill) they had me leaving the restaurant upset instead of happy. The dinner was good but did not justify $730 at all. One of my daughter's courses was a turnip while my course was halibut. She was having the vegetarian menu but they charged $165 for her dinner just like the regular menu. The restaurant's absolute lack of flexibility is appalling imo. The tip of 20% is compulsory and the city charges were also a surprise. Mainly at a fine dinning establishment this absolute lack of empathy facing a guest's illness seems a lack of customer service that should cost then their star. Besides the disagreeable incident of getting charged for nothing, the meal was not that exceptional and the price was not justified. I do not recommend it.
