food is pretentious and bland.
Serving sizes extremely small and prices are outrageous. Mandatory 18% service charge added to bill.

Had an early dinner with friends here the other night and had the best time together. The staff were so nice, accommodating, and patient with us. My friend and I got there about 30 minutes before our reservation time but they immediately sat us in our reserved booth for 5 and let us kick off our Friday evening festivities with a bottle of wine. The food was FANTASTIC - you have to try the lobster roll, linguini with clam topped with uni, the big eye tuna, and the roasted broccoli salad. We loved the wine recommendations as well and can't wait to go back again!

Just returned from dinner and felt it necessary to write a review due to the decision of ownership to charge both an 18% service charge and then leave it up to the customer to tip the server separately. While the check explains the reasoning why this is being done, as a long time restaurant goer I found it offensive that the restaurant has taken this position, which essentially makes the guest pay for the salary of its employees. The food and service were fine. The prices, of course, have gone up, but I have never seen an 18% service charge added to the subtotal, and then told by the server that the tip would be additional. Based upon the recommendation of the restaurant to add an additional 18% tip for our servers that would equate to 36% in additional costs on our bill plus sales tax. Very disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good as was the service, but the ownership
The food was good as was the service, but the ownership seem shady. They claim an 18% "service charge" goes to pay their staff higher wages, but from conversations we had with the manager it seems to be going to ownership. And the staff is not getting living wages--$19 an hour which is less than in n out. plus, to make matters worse they are taking this at the expense of the staffs' tips: 1) the ownership must know that people are likely to pay a lower tip thinking the 18% is already going to the staff, and 2) they promote this. Their suggested tip starts at 10% and goes up to 18% whereas I've normally seen this start at 18% and go up to 25% (or 22% minimum for the high end). This is all my opinion, but we won't be going back.
Be the first to ReplyI haven't been here for so long.
I'm glad that they remained open after the pandemic. The vibe is still the same, and I Love it. The menu, of course, is different. It's a tapas-style dish and is shareable. They still have the Uni pasta that I love. I do wish they have a cheese and charcuterie platter. Because I love fries, I tried their NASHVILLE HOT FRIES with the COMEBACK sauce... OMG! It's to die for! I know it's just fries but damn! I'm still dreaming about it. Be mindful of the prices for each dish and alcohol you order. It will add up, and they have taxes, gratuities, etc., that they add. With all the dishes we ordered and other charges, they added plus tip... We ended up paying over $400! For a couple! Was it worth it? With the dishes, we tried not really. I think it's overpriced. They only have street parking.

I've been to Son of a Gun many times, and the food is always excellent. It is still excellent. If you want delicious seafood - shrimp toast, lobster roll, tuna ceviche - this the place to come. So - why am I not going to be going back any time soon, and giving them a meh review? The service and the cost. I went for a week night dinner with a friend; we had a lot to catch up on and the restaurant was not full. The food was wonderful! Nonetheless, at the stroke of 90 minutes, our check was delivered without us asking (no coffee for us!), and the servers then hovered and circled to make it as clear as possible that we needed to leave. So we did, even though (again) there were plenty of tables free. As many people have noted, the 18% mandatory tip is accompanied by an aggressive ask for yet more money when the check comes. It was too much, on top of being so time limited at our table.

So so so enjoyed my dining experience at Son of a Gun! A friend was in town visiting and I thought we'd try out Son of a Gun. We were NOT disappointed! The food was DELICIOUS! Highly reckoned the lobster blt! The fries are also super yummy and come with an addicting aioli dipping sauce!!! On top of great food, the servers and staff weee wonderful! They really went out of their way to serve our party. I will most definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyI returned to Son of a Gun last week after a long absence
I returned to Son of a Gun last week after a long absence (7 years maybe?) and was happy to see that things seemed to be much the same. The food was consistently excellent, with the fried chicken sandwich a definite standout. The menu includes notice that there will be an 18% service charge added to the check for fair wages, healthcare, etc, and that tips on top of that for exceptional service will be divided among the staff. I was therefore not surprised to see the amount included on the check but I was not expecting to see more language on the bill about why it's important to tip the staff. This information was HIGHLIGHTED by the server on the check, then again highlighted on the final credit card charge slip. This left me with a very poor impression of the entire evening and a note to self never to return.
Be the first to ReplyThis was my second time dining at Son of a Gun, the first
This was my second time dining at Son of a Gun, the first time was years ago, probably 10 years. Son of a Gun is a great LA staple restaurant and someplace I would return!I'll start with the negative, which truly was the only downside. Do not sit outside, do not request it. It is extremely lackluster and probably the worst outside dining I have ever experienced. There is no "patio" there is ONE circular table and 2 BENCHES where you will be facing the street and quite possible strain your neck trying to converse with the person next to you. They honestly should eliminate the outside "seating."Outside seating aside, the food and drinks are great. This is a pescetarian's dream for a restaurant. They do have a few meat dishes but mainly fish and seafood. I loved my tequila cocktail, I ordered the "infante." It was a refreshing jazzed up margarita, simple BUT very delicious. I also loved my trout amandine entree. This was better than the trout amandine at their sister restaurant, Petit Trois and that is a French restaurant... My friend got the fish and chips which she also enjoyed. For dessert we shared 2 scoops of ice cream. We got the bourbon crunch and the banana miso caramel. I normally would not order ice cream at a restaurant for dessert but these flavors sounded interesting and are made in house. We both did not taste any hint of miso and the banana miso caramel but did enjoy this flavor very much. The ice creams are delicious and unique. Not to sound frugal but the ice cream is $7.5 for one scoop while a pint costs $16. I highly doubt 1 scoop of ice cream is 1/2 of the pint.... $7.5 feels a little steep for 1 scoop. Generous portions which I appreciate and fairly priced. Service is good. Parking is relatively easy, meter on 3rd Street or neighborhood parking.

I've driven by the place a handful of times and always meant to stop in. I finally did and I am so glad. The food was delicious! We got the caramelized onion dip which was so tasty with fresh chips. Also the fish and chips was fried yet somehow so light and flaky. Cocktails were delicious and staff was very kind and helpful. If you're thinking about stopping in, definitely do it. I even ran into a friend that night I hadn't seen in a while so you know it's a good spot when you're running into people you know.

Amazing small restaurant with amazing staff and the food is basically out of this world. It's advertised as a seafood restaurant, but there are a few options that are not seafood. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyI had a pretty bad experience here at lunch.
Bad service and worse food. My girlfriend and I had to share a plate and cup for a majority of the meal. He never brought us either of those, condiments, or even menu's for that matter until we asked twice. The fish and chips were more like batter and crisps. My buddy was allergic to vinegar, we told him straight off the bat, and he literally put a bottle of vinegar right in front of him. The manager was super nice though and took the batter and crisps back, so I had a chicken sandwich instead. After hearing so many great things about it, the expectation was pretty high, but it was hardly even good. The chicken was dry, the flavor was bland, overall nothing remarkable.
Be the first to ReplyLoved this place.
My fav were the oysters and the lobster roll. The waiter was super nice and chill. Great experience
Be the first to ReplySave your money.
Terrible service tables on top of each other food not great and they have the nerve to up-charge 18 pct on the bill for all of this undeserving performance. You want good seafood there are many better choices that do not dictate to you how you must spend your money.
Be the first to ReplyTiny, tiny, expensive food.
Atmosphere is nice - but nothing blew my socks off.

My husband and I came here last night - and we really enjoyed our meal and the service was great - but like others said - you are awkwardly slapped in the face with this 18% service charge. I feel bad for the servers who are the ones who have to deliver this news at the end of a meal. One, the restaurant should be paying this for them, but second, then at least have a card on the table making it clear about this charge and have some transparency. We thought the food was excellent but this is turning off customers and LA is desperate for some good restaurants. Not sure I have the right answers, but this is not good for business.
Be the first to ReplyThis was the tiniest lobster "roll" I've ever seen.
The country ham was almost non-existent. Everything tasted very good, even though the portions were microscopic.

Was on a business trip in LA, and Animal was recommended to us- we were waitlisted at Animal, but we noticed Son of a Gun was part of the same restaurant group. We already had reservations, so we kept them and glad we did. The food was delicious- Lobster roll was a crowd pleaser (tiny, so we each ordered our own!) The Fried Chicken Sandwich was also a crowd pleaser, nice crunch. The Mahi Dip was light and celery made it refreshing. Looking forward to returning to LA and going to their sister restaurants!

Won't be back for all the negative reasons posted in these reviews. Rude host, lousy food, and expecting tip on top of service charge. F that! In fact to bankruptcy with all restaurants and stores in LA that present a snobby and rude environment with mediocre or poor product. Enough putting up with this nonsense.
Be the first to ReplyThis spot is just ok.
Nothing outstanding! Extremely overpriced and the service wasn't great. Our server was hitting on the lady sitting next to us by herself. At one point, we asked him a question and he was talking to the lady as he was dropping our food which I thought was highly rude and he asked us to repeat our question coz he wasn't listening to us. So much for being attentive! We still tipped the server on top of the service charge, but paying $350 for a party of 3 with subpar service isn't acceptable. There's tons of cool spots in the city, we won't be going there anymore.
Be the first to ReplyI just ordered some food via Door Dash.
The Peel and Eat Shrimp are out of this world delicious. Paired with the Mahi dip, it was a perfect light afternoon meal. [One note: this is not a cheap restaurant - the soda crackers that come with the dip could be a little bit classier.]
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good but the service was an issue.
The staff wasn't friendly and we felt rushed, even if the place wasn't particularly busy. I wouldn't go again even if I enjoyed the food because the service ruined the overall experience. They also add an 18% service fee to your check without alerting you in advance - not good practice.
Be the first to ReplyLove this place!!!! The seafood was fresh and the seafood
Love this place!!!! The seafood was fresh and the seafood menu was similar to what I find on the east coast! Plus the vibe is chill and low-key! Brooke was so friendly and helpful with the best menu suggestions! Definitely get the smoked fish spread...a treat I typically only find on the Gulf coast of Florida! So good! Already can't wait to go back for more of that and the fish & chips were also a fav! The fish was fried nicely and I'm SUPER picky on French fries and they are hand cut/home made. The best!
Be the first to ReplyThe prices are exorbitant and to call the food mediocre
The prices are exorbitant and to call the food mediocre would be generous. The portions are the size of kids meals. But the worst part is that they charge an 18% service charge and you still need to pay at least a 20% tip. The chef was also in a huff because we asked for Parmesan cheese to give some flavor to the abysmal linguini. Our waitress said he wouldn't allow us toPut Parmesan cheese on our linguini because it would change the taste. .....which was the point. Sigh. I wish I had a time machine. I should have stayed at homeand watch paint dry.
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunately, this is the end of Son of Gun.
Jon and Vinny have gotten a bit too greedy and can't pay their staff properly and swindle their guests with an 18% service charge, which doesn't include gratuity. They expect you to tip 20% on top of your bill's total with the additonal 18% service charge.Their prices were already high, but when you add an additional 40% to the bill, it becomes unpalatable. The food might be fine but the dining experience has soured for me.
