There is usually quite a line up upon opening so found myself super lucky to walk in and be the next to order. Usually you can find the location by looking for that line of people but if there isn't one, don't second guess the GPS. This restaurant really is behind the industrial fencing on this West Oakland street.Been going since they first opened and recently went back after some time away. Super sad that they are no longer offering the 100% buckwheat version since it was simply the best and set them apart. Even in Japan it's hard to come across so we were very lucky to have it even for that short period. The nuttiness that buckwheat has was amplified and the texture firmed up.The new set up has you going to the window to order and pay before grabbing a spot. Indoor and outdoor (dog friendly) seating are available.Set the number on your table and the servers bring the food to you.This time I got the hot tempura soba. The noodles weren't mushy with a more gentle buckwheat flavor. The broth was seasoned well and perfect in the nippy air. For the tempura, thought the batter was light and fried to just being crispy. Got one each of shrimp, mushroom, kabocha, and okra. Unfortunately, the shrimp was somewhat waterlogged which affected the taste. After getting a taste of the noodles straight, I added the togarashi which turned it into a slightly different adventure.Also got the soba cha gelato but it was icy rather than creamy. Felt like I got one of the freezer burn or older ones so after taking a few bites to make sure I didn't just get a bad spot, I closed it up. Very sad since the idea was interesting.
