We have been to Smythe & Dove twice, but last nights
We have been to Smythe & Dove twice, but last nights experience was so sub par, it warranted a review.APPS: We got the mussels and the pretzel bites. The mussels were shoved tightly into a bowl that didn't allow for the even distribution of sauce. They were stacked way too high and should have been dancing with the juice. That said, they were enjoyable and tasty. rating: 4/5 for taste. 2/5 for presentation. The pretzel bits were just fine. They didn't blow me away. 2.5/5.DINNER:First of all, I expect any high(er) end steak house to know that burgers need to rest before being plated. This is cooking 101. Otherwise, the customer gets a soggy, sloppy hunk of meat that doesn't stay together, which is exactly what happened last night. I ended up eat just the patty as everything else had fallen apart. I think I could've gotten a better burger at Applesbees frankly. Taste was there, except the eating experience was a mess. The truffle fries were stuffed with some sort of wilted leafy green. WHY?! Do you think it looks good? It looked a mess to me, and most certainly added nothing to the flavor. Do less. 2 out of 5 on my meal.My husband ordered the strip with demi glaze and whipped potatoes. The demi glaze was wayyyyy too tomatoey. Yuck. The whipped potatoes were lumpy and lacked flavor. 2 out of 5 for me, particularly given the price.ALL IN ALL: I'd rather take my $200 elsewhere. I had so much hope for this place. The outside is awesome. The inside ambiance is a bit odd (loud music downstairs, no real cohesive dinning theme, weird art work), but something I could have ignored for good food. I could see us coming back for a drink and an app, but nothing more. Would rather spend a little extra and go to ruth's chris or capital grille. OR spend LESS money at grassfields. Sorry, this is a miss for me.
Be the first to ReplyHad an enjoyable night out tonight.
GF took me for my Birthday dinner. Very large space, modern & well run. Got there before Sat night dinner run. Seated right away. Got drinks& ordered a salad. Strawberry salad, split it. It was very good. Candied walnuts! Frankie L was our server. He was great, sincerely could tell he wanted to do everything he could to make our meal the best. Good energy, lots of knowledge of the menu. Service of this level is currently rare. Our mains where the filled minon for me and steak frites for GF. She ordered them medium but they where clearly rare. Management took them back and fixed them. And more than made it right for us. Finished with a very nice carrot cake! Will Def be back for a visit.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is trash.
The food was laughably bad. I can't understand why they would build this big beautiful place and roll out garbage for food. What's the point?

Not even close as to what would be expected from a prime steakhouse. Should have known as the crowd was very sparse on a Saturday night. Steaks were tough and way under cooked for our request. Sides were very good. Waitstaff was friendly, but not top-notch attentive as would be expected. Sirloin was flavorless. At one point we were only ones in dining room. I would have been disappointed in my steak if it was at The 99. Well, tried that. Moving on.

$21 for a Manhattan WTF??? Finally broke down and dropped in for a drink. The place is inviting and the bartender was very pleasant. My wife got a house cocktail and I got a Woodford's Manhattan. The drinks were very good, then we got the check. Talk about sticker shock!! These weren't even Boston prices, they were NYC prices at a 5 star restaurant. The owners need to re-evaluate where they are. No wonder the place was less than half full on a Friday night.
Be the first to ReplyI was disappointed in the food.
My husband and I went for a 'date night'. He reserved the upstairs but it was closed so we were ushered to a high top in the bar area. There was loud music playing and approximately 3 tables full and we were seated right on top of another couple. I asked to move to the dining room where there was only one table with 3 diners. The ambience is like a hotel dining room (No decor, lighting is bright); nothing like the pictures I have seen of their upstairs dining. My husband and I both ordered the steak frites cooked to medium. My steak was cooked medium rare. My steak was full of nerves and gristle. I could not cut it with the steak knife. My husband's steak frites were served medium and 'hard to chew'. The steak is served atop truffle 'frites' which were very oily and soggy with brown sauce. I think putting the steak on top made it worse. I did not enjoy the meal. For $33 i expected a good cut of meat with crispy frites. We declined desert or extra drinks. I give 3 stars because our server was excellent. The waiter was so attentive and friendly. I will not go back unless they advertise a new chef.
Be the first to ReplyI've been to this restaurant three times.
I really wanted to like it but each visit was worse than the last. Nice atmosphere and decor. The bar area is comfortable, a nice place to hang out and the drinks are great! Ordered a shrimp cocktail. About a tablespoon of cocktail sauce on the side and the shrimp were over cooked, tough and clearly had been in the fridge for a day or two. Not good. VERY limited menu and the food is just not very good. I counted exactly 10 people in the restaurant on a beautiful Friday night in June at 8:00 pm. Left and went to Bueno Malo and it was packed! No tables available outside had a great dinner. Sorry to say Smyth & Dove but 3 strikes you're out. I fully expect this establishment to be closed by Labor Day

Have probably gone 6 or 7 times at this point, and it tops out at mediocre. For the prices, it's just not there. I'll support any and all restaurants in downtown Andover, but hoping whatever ultimately takes over the space is better.

Decided to try out this newer restaurant in a beautiful open barn space. Amazing building. Bar is on the bottom, dining is on the 2nd floor (accessible also by elevator). During the day, the ambiance is awesome with big windows letting in lots of sunlight. Nighttime, however, is another story. The windows in the back are lit by two orange-glow security lights -- it is not pleasant to sit back there with those lights shining in your face.On to the service. We had a wonderful server, she was very attentive and friendly. We ordered a strawberry garden salad to start off with to share, and my wife got the chicken while I had the steak frites. A common trend nowadays in restaurants is not to offer bread. I don't care if it's free or you make me pay for it, please, please, please get some fresh-baked bread into your restaurant and serve it. It doesn't ruin the focus on your dishes, it's just a basic expectation of most diners. So, no bread.Even though we said we wanted to share the salad, the food server only brought out the salad itself without sharing plates; he rectified this immediately and the salad was tasty and a good portion size for sharing. My wife's chicken came out and had good portion sizes all around -- lots of chicken (half of one), mashed substituted for the sweet potatoes, and spinach. Everything tasted good, although I thought her chicken look a little dry. Disappointing that there was no lemon rosemary creamy sauce or something to complement it. Felt like it definitely was missing a sauce. My dish was awesome. The steak was perfectly cooked to temperature and came out delicious and tasty. After tasting my steak, my wife said she had wished she had ordered that instead. It came with truffle fries, which were not as good as the steak, but also not bad. Missing any veg, but that's okay. I devoured that dish.We got a chocolate mousse, served in a Mason jar. Not sure what came over the chef to think this was a good way to serve a dessert, because it's nearly impossible to share from a jar. Please plate this in a more traditional manner to allow for sharing in the future. The one miss of the evening, besides the glaring orange street lights in my wife's face, was that as the evening wore on and the place got more crowded (on a Sat. night), the noise level became... painful. I hate, hate, hate restaurants that don't take into account noise design when they put so much thought into decorations, tables, plates, etc. I could barely hear my wife by the time we left. There was virtually no acoustical absorption in the main dining room, just all wood and hard surfaces. It would go a long way to making this a more enjoyable experience to take that into account by adding some fabrics and acoustical tile to the space in the future.Last, as has become increasingly common while dining out, service starts to fall off as you near the end of your dining journey. The server gets busy with other new tables and virtually forgets you're there, staring at plates that have needed clearing for 10 or more minutes. It was as bad as some other places I've dined at recently, but it's definitely something that could be better. Please don't forget your customers when they're nearing the end of their meal! We still need service, water refills, and desserts! Thanks. For me, overall it was more like 3 1/2 stars. I rounded up to 4 because my dish was very delicious (and Yelp still doesn't allow for 1/2 star reviews).
Be the first to ReplyWe have dined at this new Andover restaurant three times.
Love the vibe. They created a beautiful dining space on two levels at the site of the old Andover Bookstore. Waitstaff is great. Truth be told, I've had filet mignon all three times. Nice selection of appetizers. Love the lettuce wraps. Good variety in their dinner sides, love artisan salad and asparagus. Upstairs dining room is spacious and not too loud. That can be my pet peeve. My husband wishes they served dinner rolls. Plenty of parking. So happy this option is in our town.
Be the first to ReplyStill ill 20 hours later.
Reducing from 2 to 1 star because let's face it, getting one thing right out of the whole meal is not worth 2 stars and making me sick on my long weekend is just not cool. Finally tried this steak house. Had the steak burger which was cooked to perfection and delicious. The side of hand cut fries was not good .... cooked in old oil. I could not finish them, as much as I hoped each bite would lead me to a better fry, it didn't. Then I ordered dessert, chocolate mousse. It was served in a canning jar with some tasteless whipped topping. The mousse was more like a dark chocolate pudding and was not good. I got sick to my stomach later that night. I still feel Iill today. Won't go back.

Where do I start? I ordered salmon to-go with a side of spinach. The spinach was 12 pieces of spinach with about 4 tablespoons of raw garlic, it was nasty. The salmon was raw. I'm not talking rare, it was essentially charred on one side and raw on the other. So I had the pleasure of cooking the salmon myself. For a restaurant that charges that much for just a piece of salmon with no sides, that's shameful. Never once did they ask how I wanted it cooked either. I understand why they barely have 3 stars now. Definitely wouldn't order from here again.

The atmosphere is nice but the food is not worth the astronomical prices , it is sub par at best and an a la carte menu . There booze prices also insanely high. We spent $120 dollar for salad drowned in blue cheese dressing with barely any tomatoes. Pasta dish and overdone salmon.Service was also very slow. The experience was pretty poor.. not worth it , won't be returning.
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed our dinner here.
Ksenia was our waitress. She was great. Lovely atmosphere. Steaks were delish. Will be back!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food and great drinks.
I love sitting at the bar. Very nice bartenders and relaxed vibe.
Be the first to ReplyThe best thing about our visit was Frank, our server.
Super attentive and friendly. The food was very sub par and definitely not worth the prices they charge. The swordfish was way over cooked. The risotto was dry. My friend's steak was overcooked - although Frank offered to have it taken back and prepared correctly, we all would have finished our meals by then so he declined. We won't be returning.

Unfortunately the dining room is closed except for Fri-Sun so we were sat in the bar area. Food was OK. Started w a caesar salad that was meh. Brown lettuce and not a lot of care put into it. Not worth the cost by any stretch. The main course was a filet and swordfish. The filet was good. For $33 the swordfish was a really small portion. 4 glasses of wine and tip the bill came to $200. Left feeling it wasn't totally worth it. Love the building and downtown Andover looked festive..
Be the first to ReplyThe food is fine but overpriced.
Grassfields down the street gives you a much better bang for your buck.

During a recent trip to Andover, I was excited to find this interesting menu, especially in a small town. Although I'm always cognizant of where I'm eating and set my expectations accordingly (Andover, not Nyc or Boston), I'm forced to raise my expectations when a place charges premium prices given the area. While this place is by no means expensive, it's still far too expensive given the quality, service, and experience. I can't remember every item but the "highlights" are below. Tuna tartare - the seaweed tasted spoiled Steak frites - apparently the most popular dish. The meet was like chewing through rubber. Burger - little to no flavor in the meat

I'm from a major "foodie" city so I consciously lowered my expectations going in...but when you've offering entrees priced in the $30 range, it's only fair to get honest reviews in exchange. Here's everything we ate:Thai chicken wraps - delicious, but don't add the sauce they bring on the side. It oversweetens to the point of ruining the dish. Seared tuna - this was so terrible that we thought the fish must have gone bad. We mentioned to the waiter but just got a nonplussed look in response. Do not order.Steak burger - lacking in flavor (not enough seasoning). Described as "average to below average", particularly for an $18 burger. Steak frites - The fries and gravy are very tasty, but the cuts of meat we were served were really not good. Extremely chewy--one of our party compared it to chewing double bubble gum. Cocktails - standard priced, but nothing spectacular or inventive. Don't mean to be harsh, but if you're going to charge these prices, you definitely need to step it up on all fronts. Otherwise, none of your customers will be repeats--unfortunately, we won't.
