Smalhans Oslo Reviews from The Last Year
DIRECT EMBARRASSMENT!!
Took a LONG time, the taste was decent, but the waiter spilled a lot of the wine on the table and didn't dry it up, two out of five ice creams were completely melted when we got the dessert. Immediately after the dessert, we got the bill due to another reservation, had barely finished eating. After 4 out of 5 had paid, the waiter left and we had to get hold of another waiter so that the last one could pay. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE WHEN YOU PAY NOK 1180 FOR 5 DISHES AND WINE PACKAGE!! STRAIGHT EMBARRASSMENT!!!
Smalhans is good! Real food and real wines
The food is absolutely fantastic. They run exciting combinations with fantastic ingredients. They have brought in chefs who can cook good food. Good natural wines are also available here.
Not Worth the Wait
So SmallHans is a fine dining experience. The food was good, the service was good, the atmosphere good. There was a fixed menu of either 6 or 9 courses. We chose the 6 course menu and we were there for THREE hours. Way too long. Yes I understand we were in Europe and sometimes service is slower; and I am all for that, but at one point we waited for 30 to 45 minutes for the next course to come. The food was just not worth that kind of wait , so that is why my rating is 3 stars and not 5.
Underwhelming
Pretty unimpressive dining experience here. The service is not impressive. No one explains the concept to us, or how the relatively unknown Sami dish should be eaten, no one asks how it tastes or if we have what is needed. - And we don't have that! The bowl of onions and cabbage is far too small for six people. We don't see anything to the mayo topping and thus the dish doesn't quite come together. The bread, which is the main component, is not cooked through and the breadcrumbs are rather ordinary. consequently the food doesn't impress us either. the coffee we ordered for dessert is empty as the latter arrives some ten minutes later. The spice cake is very ordinary and, in addition, in the driest layer. Foam and quince jam taste nice and little and thus put a full stop with a resounding "yes" around our table. With so little enthusiasm from here, the place is off the list of visits to be repeated.
Disappointing
Inattentive and service-oriented service and a long wait for the food (which was relatively tasteless). Generous wine glasses. All in all a disappointing experience. Not Michelin Bib Gourmand worthy!
Good choice
A place that deserves its Michelin mention in its own right. A gem for the quality of the cuisine and choice of products. A little out of the center, but worth a visit. The crispy cod and the herbed carrot are excellent
Exciting in a cozy way
We were a group of four, who chose the Smalhansmenyen, with accompanying wine package. There were six courses, served as five. We started with turnips with mussels and a shellfish sauce. Well. Then came long ones with peas, pea sauce and pea shoots. Very good. Right three was a variation on onions and nuts. Fantastic! Then came pigwings with gratin beans in gruyere. The pigwings were very tender, but were under seasoned, so here we had to ask for salt and pepper. I could eat the beans au gratin every other day. They were indescribably good. For dessert there was an apple variety with cake, compote, sorbet and fresh apples. Absolutely good. The wine package contained two generous glasses of white and red, as well as ice cubes for dessert. It was sour, bordering on sour, but it worked. Pleasant premises and waiters made this a very pleasant experience.
Famously the only Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient in a city
Famously the only Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient in a city known to be quite expensive Smalhans resides in the St. Hanshaugen neighborhood and focuses on a shared menu featuring local farms that changes daily. Opened in 2012 and defined as "scarce way of life" it is through nose-to-tail cooking that Smalhans offers three different ways to dine daily in addition to a collection of natural wines, though the Smalhans Menu for NOK 675 seems most popular. Casual and convivial, the kitchen is currently run by Mads Ekrheim who isn't afraid to let less prized ingredients steal the spotlight while service is pleasant and educated. Fast paced compared to other Norwegian eateries, a 5-course menu lasting just 75 minutes, it was with Smalhans' own White Wine that Turnips started the meal with a complex Sauce of Mussels perfumed by Chervil. Focused on sustainability, bycatch Whiting as tender as larger specimens with Parsley and Peas, Ekrheim's best dish this evening came as Caramelized Onions and Leeks lent texture by Hazelnuts. Serving the last savory in two-parts, Beans with a bit of tooth covered in Cheese adjacent meaty "Pig's Wings," Dessert took four Ingredients and combined them in a bowl allowing each to shine on its own while also complimenting the others.
Good food at a fair price

Great home style rustic meal.
Food was satisfying and simple. Ambiance is warm. Service is prompt. Had Sunday dinner, and enjoyed it!
Food is good, but...
We had reserved a table for 4 people at Smalhans on September 18th, 2023. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. When we greeted us, the waiter asked us which menu we would choose and pointed out that we all had to choose the same one. Basically, the food was very good and we agreed on it. A chef was also nice and gave us a quick update on the “Bycatch”. However, we didn’t find some things so good for a restaurant with a Michelin entry: • The individual courses are served on a small plate (small portion for 4) You then have to divide them up among yourselves. The main course too. This is not so easy with some dishes and doesn’t look so nice. However, the restaurant kitchen only has to prepare one plate = savings • Clearing away empty dishes didn’t work, we had to ask for it twice because there was no room on the table and the staff were chatting behind the counter. • The second course was again served on a small plate in the middle, now our used plates from the first course were still there and we had to ask for new plates here too. (different dishes!) • Nobody was unfriendly, but nobody was interested either... That's not enough for a restaurant of this class and can be improved. Best Regards Stefan
Definitely recommended!
We loved it. Great service, original cuisine with a balanced menu and good value for money in Norway. We especially liked the fish of the day and the caramelized onions!
Culinary experience
Fantastically good food, good service and guidance on wine to go with the food. It was a proper culinary experience without us being overly hungry. Good ingredients and high-level cooking topped off with good wines. Have been here several times and it is delivered at a consistently high level!
Just go! If you get the chance, go! It was an experience.
The ambience is like any other. Nice small spot with wooden tables. Nothing fancy but you can tell you're gonna get good food. Got the tasting menu with the wine pairing and that is always the way to go. Highlight was the white fish for sure but everything was really good. Even items I didn't think I liked. The service is also really nice as they explain their way through the menu. Loved every second of it
Thank you bib gourmand for this recommendation because
Thank you bib gourmand for this recommendation because lunch here was everything I could have asked for. The menu only has like five things and it's perfect. Get the burger, or even better, get the Korean fried chicken, which was my favorite bite in Oslo so far. They really nail the crispiness and the sauce. Oh and the aioli with the fries is just wonderfully addicting. I would say it's a lunch not to be missed.

Prepaid Reservation Fee

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
