Just days before the DTLA location of Shojin closes on April 8, 2024, Meateater Hubby and I came here for date night. I've been coming to this fine-dining vegan sushi restaurant many, many times since 2011 and it still blows me away! To start, the vibe is so classy and so romantic. Candlelight centerpieces, jazzy lounge music, and beautiful art throughout the dining space. I also appreciate that our cozy table for two has a purse hook. The staff and service are A+ all around and I often feel treated like VIP. It was a chilly evening so we started with some hot drinks. Hubby had the Yuzu, Maple, & Fresh Ginger drink. I had the Hot Lavender Ginger Limeade. Good flavors and excellent palate cleansers. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/shojin-downtown-los-angeles?select=Ab13MWo5ghmMUkAuLxhj-Q We ordered the following... Yakitori Skewers Grilled king oyster mushrooms and shishito peppers with a rosemary sauce. I enjoyed the light pops of red peppercorns. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/shojin-downtown-los-angeles?select=NaSToUATvHKCojwQNNmvQw Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice 2.0 Spicy tofu, red "caviar", cucumber, and radish on fried brown rice. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/shojin-downtown-los-angeles?select=7Bulv2CpCOhJYKrlwUmqmw Baked Crab Cake Hand Roll Mushroom "crab" cake, avocado, oat cream, and tamari wrapped in soy paper. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/shojin-downtown-los-angeles?select=G8V0WNIyZbRUj6tg9Qw7ow Shoj-In-N-Out Hand Roll Ground "meat", crispy potato, avocado, and spicy mayo wrapped with soy paper. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/shojin-downtown-los-angeles?select=D1x3WNA9qyDqGmfBicBvOg Spicy Broccoli Tempura ... self-explanatory :) https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/shojin-downtown-los-angeles?select=UHV-OhYVjixCZQ7igyrPIw Green Forest 3.0, skinny-style Avocado, asparagus, and carrot roll topped with steamed broccoli and yuzu cream. Can I just buy a pint of that ice cream please??? and a box of that delicate and melty matcha chocolate??? No seriously, take my money! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/shojin-downtown-los-angeles?select=JPYHdyYXO2mkKeFE8PaQPg True to Shojin fashion, each dish was a delicious work of art with layers of flavors and textures. It costs a pretty penny but it is worth the treat-yo-self moments. I'm gonna miss this place! I understand that the Culver City location will still exist but this OG location will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Shojin for all the yummy memories over my 13 years of exploring your awesomeness. Last night's dinner was the perfect last hurrah! :)

My gf and I come here for our anniversary every year and every year the food is PERFECT, the service is PERFECT, and the ambiance is PERFECT. Shojin is the BEST vegan sushi I have ever had. Everything about this place is absolutely incredible. We are happy customers every time we eat here. THANK YOU Shojin!
Not bad.
Beyond Sushi in NY is much better at vegan sushi. Shojin is apparently closing its DTLA location and only keeping Culver City open. Wonder if Culver City one is better. The ramen was surprisingly not great. Noodles were overdone but the soup was not bad. Again - best descriptor is that the food wasn't bad. Prices are very high considering the food was not impressive. Service was good though.

Perfect for Celiacs! Super accommodating & mindful of allergies. I had a soy allergy, too, and they were really mindful and careful with my meal.

Just left midway through a pretty terrible experience at Shojin Downtown. We were excited to try the food here because my wife has Celiacs. We arrived to our reservation being questioned, even thought we had made one on Yelp weeks before. They finally let us in. It was Valentine's Day so there was a $140 prefix menu. When booking, we were under the impression we would have a choice to select the prefix or the regular menu - we did not. Totally fine, we were open to the prefix menu. As the food came out, we tried everything, but were not impressed, each dish less appealing than the next - including what appeared to be a ketchup rice wrap. After a bite of the fourth dish, we had had enough. Very quietly and politely we got ahold of the restaurant manager, and told her we were unhappy with the food. We explained it wasn't their fault, that we had made the decision to eat here, and we would be happy to pay for what we believed was fair - half of the meal. She went to the back, then came out saying they couldn't prepare anything from their regular menu, and offered us to take the rest of the prefix meal home...? We politely declined and said we would just prefer the check. She finally brought the check at full price ($320). I asked her why they charged us full price, even though we had only made it through half the meal, and she explained that was their policy. Very disappointedly, we paid the entire thing and left. The worst part about it, is the restaurant manager came around to us multiple times during the meal to ask how everything was. These were clearly empty questions with no plan to remedy anything. In 2024, customer service is social currency - it impacts word of mouth, reviews, and retention. Shojin had a chance to make money and keep us happy, they chose to only make money. For this, we will not be returning back, and if asked about our experience from friends, they will know the truth. Two stars for nice presentation.
I ate here last night and was incredibly disappointed.
I lived in Japan for 10 years, and can confidently say that I have a solid understanding of the intricacies of Japanese cuisine. When I mentioned not enjoying some of the dishes, I was told that I was just not accustomed to the miso taste. While Shojin clearly has a ton of positive reviews, it's clear that their ego is getting in the way of the customer experience, particularly for the price point. Silver lining: LA is filled with tons of celiac & vegan restaurants that are outstanding for half the cost. Don't waste your time here.
We paid extra for their special valentines dinner.
It was maybe the worst use of my money ever. They brand themselves as this high end restaurant but the food we were served is bland and at times gross. Even if the food cost $10 I wouldn't come here. We left feeling scammed and unsatisfied. Avoid at all costs.

Extraordinary food, prepared with upmost care and impeccability. On the expensive side, but worth for a date who does not eat meat/fish...
Omg this place has delicious sushi! One of the best in LA.
My favorite is the dynamite roll. So unique, delicious, and flavorful. This roll is not like any other around LA. I love it!!!! The dynamite roll is not cook with this toxic oil, which is a plus. My only issue and concern is that they use toxic, cancerous, and inflammatory rice bran oil for their fried and pan-fry food. So, if you care about your health, stay away from their fried and pan-fry food. I wish vegan restaurants, who claim to be "healthy", would be more conscious and cared more about the unhealthy side effect the seed n rice oils cause. If this place were to change their oils to exclusive olive oil for cooking and avocado oil for frying this restaurant would be a perfection. I would be a devoted client. Additionally, ambiance is cozy, warm, and intimate. Service is always great. Would recommend , just be conscious of what you order.

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
