Beautiful Experience
This place is run by Chef Derrick Wilson. Japanese trained and celebrates the best ingredients with beautiful presentation. Expensive yes but for me an experience worth having. Food provided this way is so much more of an experience than even sitting at a table and being served by a waiter. Seconds matter and in this style of dining you realize what you have been missing!

I made a reservation on their app and they call back a few hours later saying there was a simultaneous booking. What is point of an app when stuff like this happens and why do I have to cancel and not the other party? Itโs obvious they were playing favorites. WILL NEVER COM BACK!!! YOU CAN KEEP YOUR 10% DISCOUNT!

Be the first to ReplyA very special and unique experience - An American chef trained in Japane
The sushi, the prepared dishes and the sake are all outstanding.
It is a tiny place with perhaps a dozen seats at a counter with the chef Derek Wilcox preparing sushi before you on a modest slab of hinoki . He trained in Kyoto and Tokyo and his work is as good as any of the top places in NY. T
he usual language barrier does not exist so you can explore with him each dish, the sourcing of the sushi (he says he spends most of his time sourcing fish from Japan and elsewhere) and even the provenance of the serving dishes which have their own story. The most engaging experience I have ever had.
The night we were there, 2 customers from Japan were also enjoying their evening. Clearly his reputation has travelled.
Best Omakase in TrIBeCa
If you want the best Omakase in TriBeCa, look no further. This is it.
I got a seat at the bar all the way at the end, just the way I like it. The bar is dimmer and nicer looking than most so I really like. What I hate is the constant waiting and announcing of the dish but thatโs Omakase, what can you do?
I found the cooked dishes like the octopus and the oyster more amazing than the sushi. The latter one was so tasty.
The sushi is what you would expect at a high-end Omakase.
This is the first time that I been at an Omakase with a non-Asian chef so it was kinda weird but the guy looks like he knows what heโs doing.
I feel there are not enough dishes and felt hungry afterwards. I might come back if I donโt find a better Omakase in the area.
Outstanding Sushi
We dined at Shoji following an exemplary NYT review. The sashimi and sushi were outstanding, with some less traditional preparations created by the talented chef.
Overall, we had an excellent meal. But personally, we prefer Sushi Nakazawa, (even when the head chef isnโt presiding), with its warmer, livelier ambiance and excellent sake pairings to match truly outstanding sushi.
For sushi aficionados, this is definitely worth trying.
Wow, That Was Very, Very Good!
Had an incredible meal at Shoji last night. The omakase meal was exceptionally well executed by Chef Derek Wilcox -- who spent years training in Japan -- with impeccably-fresh sushi, sashimi and other thoughtfully-crafted dishes. Dining at Shoji feels like dining at a friend's home -- there are only 12 seats -- and the chef takes time to craft the experience for each diner. The ambiance, music and comfortable pacing all added to a wonderful experience. Was also very impressed with the very kind owner, Idan Elkon, who spoke with us after our meal. Not surprised that Shoji received 3-stars in its recent NY Times review.
Looking forward to my next visit.
Best Japanese Restaurant in NYC!
This small authentic Japanese restaurant has a lovely decor and you dine only at the sushi bar. The service is lovely and effortless. The food presentation is visually beautiful. The food is exquisite! Subtle tastes pique your taste buds!
