Fun spot that's a reliably good time in terms of food and experience. All of the ramen choices are good, as are the izakaya items I've tried although those could maybe could use slightly more variety. Impressive beer and drink menu that pairs well with the food, and plenty of seating makes it easier to get a table at prime times. If you're in the area this is definitely one of the better options

Japanese restaurant with delicious cocktails & even better ramen. The dimmed lights gives this place a very intimate ambiance, sort of like a speakeasy vibe . We have been here countless times & service is always prompt.

Best ramen. Amazing hamachi crudo. Great sake and Japanese whiskey selection. Max is the best bartender around.

The food and cocktails here are absolutely delicious and the service is great. The ambiance is darker, sexier and exciting making it perfect for a date night or any outing with friends or family that you want to feel special.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Ramen and it's affordable.
Both the black and red ramen are good. I always get a few appetizers too. I recommend the Let that Mango cocktail

Ok...it's another ramen place. And living in the Bay Area there are many many places to try and I've tried a few. My husband is a noodle fiend...even dragging me to Kauai to eat at Hamura's in the middle of summer. We've tried all the famous places like Marufuku, Orenchi, and Ramen Nagi, but I must say we were most impressed with the perfection of the Red and Black Ramen. The Spicy Fries were so flavorful. The Butterfly cocktail was so cool turning from blue to pink after you mixed it. I wish we had bigger appetites in order to try all the other dishes they offer.Don't be put off by the stark, unassuming exterior...Shinmai is a beautifully exquisite gem inside. What a great place to dine so close to the Fox Theatre and BART's 19th St. station. We will be back!

After living in Oakland for three years and trying a variety of places, I believe Shinmai is our favorite restaurant to dine at, especially when taking friends out. The interior is a vibe, the drinks are fantastic, and of course most importantly, the food, from the small plates to the ramen, always hits. We love the hamachi crudo, takoyaki roulette, chicken karaage, and the special bluefin tuna option they had our last time we went. Our friends who are vegan/vegetarian have had positive review of the mushroom gyoza, vegetable ramen, spicy fries, shishito peppers, and garlic edamame. The staff is always friendly and warm, and understanding if we are running a few minutes late. Thank you for being so consistent and a staple Japanese go-to spot in Uptown!
Be the first to ReplyTasty very salty but for one meal it was fine.
You'll drink a little of water. Moody lighting like a date place.

Good food with a fun cocktail menu, cool and dark vibe, but the service was pretty lacking. I hope someone called in sick because otherwise these poor servers are just perpetually getting slammed and no one wins.

We had three different types of Ramen and loved each one of them. Great environment, great food.

I'm too lazy to list everything we tried off the menu but we were enough people to try like 8 or 10 things and there wasn't a dud in the lot. Enjoyed the hell outa that meal. I will say the fried olives are pretty magical. You should get those.

They dim the lights giving it a nice date night kind of vibe. We ordered: the Red and Black Tonkotsu ramen and not pictured are Spicy Fries and brussel sprouts. All the dishes had great flavor! The spicy fries were honestly my favorite dish of the night, I love thinner cut fries and the seasoning was so yummy! They weren't oily at all, had the perfect crispness and wasn't overly spicy, just a nice flavorful kick at the end! The brussel sprouts had a tangy flavor to it, was a bit oily but still enjoyable! The ramen wasn't anything special, the red ramen had a nice spiciness while the black ramen was very garlicky. Both tasty! The noodles were nice and chewy, broth was good. Our waiter was very friendly and came back several times to see how we were enjoying our food :)

This is a fun spot to go every other Friday, after my partner's acupuncture. We have gone at dinner time and had little problem getting seated most times. It *has* been chaotic, short staffed and slow, but that has been limited in my experience. It's a perfect compromise: I love ramen and he's more of a steak guy. He's gotten the steak most times and loved it. The portion is small (which is what he wants) and deliciously seasoned. I always get the red tonkatsu with a side of extra spice. The noodles have a good texture and the broth is full-bodied. I'm a little stuck up about chasu quality and can say that theirs is quite good: not toothsome and flavorful. The spicy, umami fires are our must have and should be for anyone who like szechuan pepper numbing flavor. The most rare thing is that "queen of special orders" can order as-is, which is a wonderful thing.

So many great things to say about this place!Food: 10/10 - I'm a huge ramen lover (that's had ramen in a bunch of different cities too) and this one is UP THERE. The flavors of my ramen were so perfectly executed! We also got the chicken karaage to share and the sauce they serve to dip with it was delicious. // I didn't get a cocktail this time (pictured is their ginger soda) but the cocktail menu looked amazing and I will need to go back for some drinks! Ambiance: 9/10 - It's a little dark and moody, which is most definitely a vibe but only knocking one star off in case that's not the environment you're looking for. It's a sexy, swanky, trendy place to go with friends or a date. Service: 8.5/10 - Not bad service whatsoever, but it also wasn't the most amazing service ever. Nothing above and beyond a standard, good experience. The place also has no windows to the outside street so from the street view, you don't know you're walking into a restaurant. Which I think is pretty cool, adds to that modern, trendy feel :) They also had a private room which would be fun to rent out for birthday celebrations or like team outings. I'll definitely be back as I'm honestly drooling about the ramen writing this review!

Best ambience, service, appetizers, ramen, music playlist, and drinks. Favorite spot ever! Black garlic tonkotsu ramen & Where's Valdez cocktail
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a Sunday evening and got seated right away.
Tried the takoyaki roulette, where one of the takoyaki has a ghost pepper inside of it instead of octopus. It made the experience fun to eat since you don't know who will get a spicy pepper. The inside of the takoyaki was a bit cold for my liking but the flavor was good. Also got the hamachi crudo, which I really enjoyed. Lastly, tried the black tonkatsu ramen. The broth was super flavorful, black garlic oil was fragrant, pork was tender, and noodles cooked well. Highly recommend to try if you're craving ramen!
Be the first to ReplyShinmai is one of my best-kept secrets in Oakland.
Great ramen, wonderful ambiance, and I can usually get a reservation without much trouble. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyThe ambience is casual and chic.
The food is Japanese fashion. The cocktails were good quality. Not a large food variety but the quality is good. We liked their hamachi and chicken karage.
Be the first to ReplySuper cool ambience and great for a date night.
Service was a little slow, but the food and cocktails made up for it!
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance was lovely for a casual date night.
Staff were super friendly and sweet. Their red tonkotsu ramen and gyoza were so delicious, as well as their spicy fries and tokoyaki. 10/10 recommend this place!
Be the first to ReplyProbably one of the best ramen spots in Oakland.
Everything was 10000% consistent: Food, service, and QUALITY! The Tonkatsu Ramen was packed with so much flavor. I appreciate the fact that Shinmai uses thin ramen noodles!
Be the first to ReplyThe food here is consistently amazing.
It's one of my favorite Ramen places in the area. They also have a nice rotating many of side dishes and desserts and cocktails. I've never been disappointed here.
Be the first to ReplyThis is my favorite ramen joint in the East Bay.
Even when I was getting it during the "no dine in" phase of the pandemic, they packaged the ramen nicely and the flavor was still on point. The Oreo Mochi dessert they have is amazing as well. One time I came and had like 3 of them. Don't judge me!!

4.5 stars: Convenient to walk to from the downtown Oakland Bart station. Large space with a nice ambience (although the music was a bit loud at times), service was attentive. Did not get their ramen, but got lots of appetizers/small plates to share. We got 6 between 2 of us, but 5 would have been more than enough. Cocktails are creative with Asian spins on classic drinks. Favorites were: Miso mussels - seems like this is not always on the menu, but the sauce that the mussels were in was delicious. Wish there was bread to mop up the sauce! Piedmontese ribeye steak - probably my favorite dish of the night, meat was flavorful and tender and comes with a great sauce Ika leg karaage - fried squid legs, came with 4 skewers. Perfectly fried with a yuzu aioli to dipPork belly bao - comes with 2, the chashu inside is very soft
