We had a good dining experience at Shin, but the cost was well beyond what is reasonable. I’ve had sushi all over the world (Tokyo, Sapporo, San Francisco, New York, to name a few places). I would rate the sushi at Shin to be in the top 25% in terms of the food quality. The chef did an excellent job. My rating was less than 5 stars due to the value for what I paid.
When a reservation is made, a 150 CHF deposit is required. That’s fine. The cost of the meal is not on the website, and it was my mistake in not asking. Per person the meal, before drinks is 299 CHF.
Immediately on being seated, we looked at the saki list. There were several options (far fewer than what I expected). The bottle costs ranged from 195 to 366 CHF. There were no less expensive options. I looked the price of a bottle on the menu (the Dewazakura Ichiro) that was listed for 260 CHF. A bottle can be purchased from a store for 58 CHF. That markup is too high. And, the owner (who is not the chef) pushed the saki on the customers much too hard, even suggesting to a Brazilian couple that “most of my Brazilian customers drink more than one bottle.” My companion and I opted for a glass each.
So, with no bottle of sake (just the two glasses) and two liters of sparking water at 12 CHF each, our total bill came to 792 CHF for two. This approaches what it costs to dine at Sukiyabashi Jiro, one of the finest sushi restaurants in Japan.
In summary, the Sushi at Shin was good. But the value received for the cost is poor.
