When I'm taken to an "Old School" Italian restaurant, anytime or anywhere, I have a smile on my face so large, you need a chisel to knock it off! That's how I felt last night walking into The Saloon Restaurant here in Philadelphia, near Cianfrani Park. My youngest boy and his fiancée took me and my wife here for dinner, and we were so impressed with this amazing two story restaurant that is making some of the best Italian classic dishes along with very inventive Italian specials dishes. I love the whole front of the house bar thing along with all of the old school decorations - it's just a "Feel Good" thing for me! Now, the food: * The bar was mixing fantastic cocktails. My gin martini was so good I sipped it ever so slowly * Their Caesar Salad is top notch - I just loved it * My Veal Parmigiana was (once again) old school, just the way I like it * My wife's Chicken Milanese had all of the trimmings she likes so much, so she was a happy camper * Our sons Pasta Bolognese was delicious * His Fiancée's Angel Hair pasta with crab was delectable * The Carpaccio was perfect * Our bottle of Ratti Barbera was an excellent addition for this dinner * The Rice pudding dessert was spot on The service was exceptional and the ambience was completely in my zone which made this evenings meal so gratifying. My wife and I so enjoy flying to each city our four sons live in. With food like we had this night, Philadelphia is edging out the other three cities.

Saloon a Philly legend for many years remains untouchable for fine dining experience. Staff are very attentive and gracious. Salads are a must and the Porterhouse melts like butter and cooked to perfection. Can't go wrong with any of their recommendations from staff or specials too. Desserts are plentiful to choose from and great end to a wonderful meal. Parking is free and super close and staff are friendly inside and out. Great place for romantic or special occasions. Reservations are a must.

My girl and I went last night to the great and classy Saloon last night. I hung out with Freddie the bartender who made me a very smooth Aperitivo Campari spritz. We had a very late seating (9:15) but the place was still buzzing. Unfortunately, last night's meal was a bit uneven which is extremely rare here. The Clams Pavarotti 5 stars), as always, were in the stratosphere of flavor. However, the Octopus salad, (3 stars) while plentiful, did not have the freshest octopus. We both ordered the Scallop Special with the crabmeat which honestly was not the best I've ever had there (3.5 stars). Our waitress (5 stars) was amazing, classy who was professional and knew her stuff. The waitresses assistant (2 stars), was a bit too eager to take my stuff away and actually put his hand across my body to remove the bread. This was a brave move! In summary, I will be back here very soon and even the classiest and finest restaurant in South Philly can have an off night at 9:15 pm.

I love this place! The atmosphere is amazing and the service was top-notch. It's a real old-school Italian place that felt like it was right out of Italy. also loved the drinks and all the food that we got! Especially the petite fillet was my favorite. I will be back for that alone.

Be the first to ReplyI've been trying to write this review for Saloon since I
I've been trying to write this review for Saloon since I went a month ago, but I just haven't been able to. This has never happened to me before. I'm not sure why my writer's block has been so formidable, but I really haven't been able to pen anything. The only thing I can think of is that Kendrick Lamar lyric when he says: "Writer's block for two years, nothin' moved me, Asked God to speak through me..." It's just on loop for me when I try to detail how beautiful this place is. The only words I have been able to come up with to describe the authentic Italian energy and decor of Saloon is "Quintessential New York," but I don't want to say that because it's so trite and boring. I begin detailing how fantastic this 11oz Truffle Filet topped with herb truffle butter and a side of mashed potatoes was, but all I can hear between my ears is Kendricks weird, nasally voice saying "Writers block for two years, nothin moved me..." As I try to find the words to describe how delicious this homemade bolognese was and pair those adjectives with a witty and kind of funny metaphor, I just start thinking "God I hope this writer's block doesn't last two years......." Maybe it's because Saloon is my girlfriend's favorite restaurant in Philly, and I know she'll be going over this with a fine tooth comb. Or Perhaps it's because I felt so underdressed in my plain white t, oversized Alo corduroy button down, and Jeans that I don't want to relive that experience. Or it could be that the Negroni and glass of Montepulciano I had hit me harder than I thought and I can't authentically recall the experience like I want to. It could simply be that I'm just not who I thought I was. Maybe I don't deserve the Yelp Rookie of the year award. Or maybe, just maybe, it's because certain experiences are so moving that they are truly ineffable. Sorry, Saloon. I'll come back one day and update a review that isn't brought to you by writers block, because you deserve it. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__

Loved! Came here for a special occasion and it checked off all the boxes. The ambiance was cozy, romantic, and festive for the holiday season. The service was friendly and well-paced. And the food was delicious. To start, we got the tuna crudo and mussels. Then for our entrees, we got the filet with truffle butter and mashed potatoes and the seafood linguini. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

One of the best Italian restaurants in Philly! Excellent homemade food! We started with a perfectly cooked eggplant with cheese. We died and went to heaven! The Veal parm was cooked so tender you can cut it with a fork. The service Exceptional! We can't wait to return! FYI beautiful ambiance!
Be the first to ReplyI have wanted to dine here for years.
We had dinner 5pm Tuesday 12.5.23 for my birthday. We managed to arrive early at 4:45 due to lack of traffic coming in. My phone said the restaurant was open so we tried the door but it was locked. No big deal I was tipping the Uber on my phone and figured we would wait. The bartender unlocked the door and offered us to sit at the bar until they actually open. She did not have to do that and it was greatly appreciated. Service and food was phenomenal. I loved the old world charm of the dark interior and all the varied lights. They had red roses on each table. Old woodwork abounds. I loved the ambiance. The complimentary bread and fresh pesto to start was delicious. We had Joel Gott Cab and a Lychee Martini for drinks. To start: *Tuna Carpaccio-yellowfin tuna pounded thin and served raw; topped with oranges, arugula, capers and lemon olive oil * Pear and Burrata Salad -arugula, dried Turkish apricots, pine nuts in a Nocella dressing Entrees *Scallop Special With Lump Crab In Cognac Sauce Over Linguini * Lobster Francaise -South African lobster tail out of its shell, dipped in a light egg batter and sautéed in white wine, lemon and butter sauce; jumbo lump crab meat Dessert *Lemon Layer Cake My tuna carpaccio was so bright and fresh I couldn't stop eating it. The Burrata was very fresh and a great mix of flavors. The lobster was cooked perfectly it practically melted like butter when cut. The scallops were cooked spot on as well and the cognac sauce was scrumptious. Everything was delicious and perfectly executed. Our server was professional, attentive, and friendly. We felt welcomed during our visit despite not being from the area nor being regulars. Highly recommend this spot. I wished we lived closer.
Be the first to ReplyThe food, ambiance, and service are consistently excellent.
However, the last time we were there the cocktails were incredibly disappointing. We ordered a variety of martini-like drinks, and they were syrupy and an odd color. It was as though they used cheap simple syrup, triple sec, rose's lime . In the past, the cocktails have been top notch! New bartenders or they were distracted by the wait staff?
Be the first to ReplyAppetizer sampler was perfect.
Cocktails were on point. Caesar was traditional, very good. Veal parm was ordered two ways: bone-in and boneless. Bone-in was better. The only glaring issue is how boring the pasta is. Like so many Italian restaurants they serve a small amount of over-cooked spaghetti that's absurdly over-priced. Shameful, to be brutally honest, but you can go to Manhattan and have the same experience at Fiorello's. No respect for pasta-lovers. Sorry, not sorry.

Great service, great meal, lively atmosphere would highly recommend. Only down side is they do not have the ingredients list for their desserts because they are not made in house. So for people with nut allergies definitely be a little cautious.

Be the first to ReplySaloon was the perfect setting to celebrate husband and I's
Saloon was the perfect setting to celebrate husband and I's first anniversary. The setting couldn't be any more glamorous, and they have delicious food to back it up. I've passed this place a hundred times but never really knew anything about it. I feel like some people (myself included) assume it's a dive bar of sorts. But once inside you totally get the speakeasy vibe, as you're surrounded by beautiful people and interesting artifacts of yesteryear. We ordered an appetizer special to kick our night off. It was a stuffed pepper chorizo type thing and it was fabulous...just the right amount of spice. It paired wonderfully with our cocktails. For my entree I ordered the lobster francaise, which ended up being one of the best dinners of my life. The lobster tail was lightly fried to perfection, and the lemon sauce was perfectly seasoned and not overwhelming in any way. I can't recommend this dish enough and am planning my next visit specifically for more of this magical lobster. All of this deliciousness is accompanied by a PARKING LOT which in South Philly deserves a few stars of its own. Suburbanites need not fear the lack of street parking (or parallel parking skills) when making reservations to eat here. They have ensured that there is absolutely no reason not to dine here. I can't recommend Saloon highly enough and I hope everyone reading this basks in the deliciousness and glamour they have to offer.
Be the first to ReplyI was here once, about 25 years ago for a friends birthday.
It was so special so I knew I wanted to bring my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner this year. I was able to make a reservation a few days before our Friday night out. Our reservation was for 8:45. We got there around 8:30 and had a drink at the bar on the first floor before we were found to be seated. Our meal was wonderful! I has the caesar salad and shrimp scampi with a side of homemade pasta. My boyfriend enjoyed the clams casino and a veal dish that was a special for the night. Everything was great! The service-from the valet attendant, bartenders, wait staff, coat check, etc.....was excellent! Oh and I can't forget to mention how incredible the restaurant is decorated! It's a step back in time in the best way possible! I loved all of the little details and could spend hours there admiring it all!

Wow!! 100% recommend!! Food, wine, service, ambiance, location all excellent! The server knew the menu and specials backwards and forwards. The pasta was on point, the Osso Buco special that my coworkers all chose was apparently to die for! The vibe is upscale old school.

Great food, delicious wine, impeccable service! Perfect for special occasions and out-of-town guests. This restaurant truly cares about your dining experience, and it shows in every detail. Yes, it's expensive, but you deserve nice things. Get the appetizer sampler, you won't regret it (note: it may cost a lot? I was a bit tipsy, I don't remember. See above: wine) There is also an attached lot with valet service, so don't let the daunting prospect of South Philly parking deter you. Or get an Uber so you can relax and enjoy the delicious wine.
