Be the first to ReplyAmazing dining experience
We had the best experience at Sake. Top service by all staff, especially our main waiter Jan. Every staff was courteous, friendly and happy to be there. The head chef made sure all the food came out in a timely manner and every dish was top quality and delicious. Sake always had good food but it has improved even more. An excellent experience last night , could not fault it ! Ps : it's not our first time at sake. We been there many times. Cheers JenKen
Be the first to ReplyAn expensive and comically time consuming fail.
We sat at the chef's counter and ordered the most expensive chef's selection, cocktails, and a bottle of sake. What started out well turn south quickly as the kitchen lost track of orders and our courses went from ten minutes intervals to twenty. We jokingly asked if we should go to the Pancake House next door to get some dinner prompting the next course to arrive. Then another thirty minutes passed and it had now been two hours since our seating and we requested our check. They stumbled to figure out how to credit us the remaining two courses and we ran for the hills. We are fairly sure one of our trio of hosts, who continuously coughed in our face, was so high he lost track of reality.
Be the first to Replynice ambiance
Food and service was god, thouh some dishes were very salty and we had to wait awhile for them to be replaced. Though apprecated staff being attentive and polite to customers
Be the first to ReplyGreat Experience
Sale was fantastic, I never write reviews but I had to because of how many poor ones I saw…. The food, service, and ambiance were all fantastic. I don’t understand the negative reviews, we had a number of starter dishes, sake, and then for main course had wagyu skirt and duck dish which was all phenomenal. Ignore the whiny reviews and just go.
Be the first to Reply5% service fee that doesn’t go to the staff????
My review title should tell you just what this restaurant stands for, greed! We were not informed at time of booking that there would be a service charge of 5% on top of all food and drink charges, after GST! Yes a tidy little fee that goes straight to the business coffers, not a cent to the staff. This was the deal breaker for us when we visited Sake. It was a pretty busy Saturday night and the ambiance was great. Our waiter was lovely and we ordered what we thought was lots of food. It all came pretty quickly and was delicious, but very small servings so we had to order more. For 2 adults and 1 child it was definitely more expensive than we were anticipating. All up (including the service fee) it was $450, and that included just one alcoholic drink! With such an expensive bill, for such a casual setting, it was a real sting to find the “service charge” attached to our bill at the end. Even worse to find out from our waiter that all of that service fee goes to the business and none to the staff. What a rort!
Be the first to ReplyTotal disappointment
We came to Saké expecting the price to reflect the standard of food, it didn’t come close. Every dish was average at best. There’s not much more to say than I’ve had far better Japanese meals for a far more reasonable price. Avoid.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed
Would never return, food great but service so bad. Kitchen closes at 9, we had 8 pm booking, suggested by waiter if we needed more food, order later to be told … hurry up as kitchen is closing. Ordered still water which I thought was going to be tap water and charged $12 per bottle. Dark, music loud, noisy and the worst service. Not busy, I now know why.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Japanese cuisine
We had no reservation but felt very welcome here as a group with young children. The food was absolutely delicious and the service excellent! Very conveniently located just down the street from Double Bay beach.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
For a restaurant that decided to close the kitchen at 9pm, I find it interesting that they would take dinner reservations for 8.30pm. When we arrived on time, the lady at the reception took the better part of 5 minutes to locate our reservation, only to advise that the table wasn't ready (despite the restaurant being far from booked out). It was suggested we have drinks from the bar while waiting. When the table became available maybe 10 minutes later, the drinks had not arrived. In fact they only came after the wine, that we had ordered at the table. We ordered starters and were just starting to eat, when the waitress asked (or rather directed) us to make our final orders as the kitchen would close at 9. Badly organised, with unfriendly and inefficient staff and ok-ish food, I see no reason to trouble this establishment with my business again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and awesome host
Gustavo was an awesome host and food was divineThanks for a Memorable night
The wagyu steak melted in our mouth and a suprisingly delicious dish was the fried Brussels sprouts
Sat night long wait times and slow service
We went there last night for first time and have to say I was so disappointed to see the lack of service for this level of restaurant, I think they must have been short staffed as our waiter seemed to be struggling to keep up, there was a long wait for drinks and between each meal took atleast 45 mins except dessert as I think those are all pre-prepared, one of our starters and main meal dishes came out after everyone had already finished that course. We ordered al a carte, perhaps they are only ready for the set menu. We ordered drinks and it was forgotten and had to chase up, we asked for dessert menu and again had to chase up. The waiters were obviously overloaded with the current bookings as well as walk ins that came in which was too many guests for the amount of staff on, I wouldn’t return or recommend to anyone now as I wouldn’t want anyone paying that much almost $600 for our table where you can get better service at a much less expensive restaurant . The dishes were nice, but honestly expected more from this place, our local Japanese we love and get the same amount of satisfaction with the food at much less of the cost. The atmosphere, location, hype and the dragon egg dessert is what I felt this place is riding on from last nights experience, food and service should be at the top of the list for a place like this.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible Omakase Experience
Dined in at 6:00p.m. on a Sunday. The chef probably had a day off.
My fiancé and I ordered the omakase with paired beverages. In summary:
-1st dish - sonomono - served as pickled tomatoes there was a terribly bitter flower there - not sure if it was a garnish or is meant to be eaten (why is it there). The Nihonshu was good - poorly paired with this dish.
-2nd dish - seared kingfish. No flavour from the sear whatsoever. I question the quality of the fish. The dish was bland.
-3rd dish - "nest scallop". Most ok tasting dish of the night. presentation was a mess. Barely any salsa for the fried mess it was presented on.
-4th dish - Fried barramundi. Not seasoned. As much as I love the taste of barramundi and the pairing of Chablis, the fish was not seasoned at all. I also forgot I was in a Japanese restaurant for a moment. It's hilarious that this dish is served with quinoa and there are no spoons provided with the dish. Are we expected to eat quinoa with chopsticks?
-5th dish Wagyu - served cold. By this time, my fiancé had enough and asked for the bill after the first bite.
-Wine pairing - only 3 of the 6 were Nihonshu (Japanese sake) - very questionable choices.
As for the ambience, we were seated in the main dining room - next to a loud obnoxious table that was cussing every 5 minutes. Here I thought the wait staff would politely ask for the table to mind their volume. No - I guess I had to politely ask them myself.
Over the course of the meal, nothing was explained about the pairing. The dish was basically placed on your table and the paired drink would come 5 mins later.
After speaking with the manager, she had the gall of mentioning that plenty of others had enjoyed the omakase. It's also a joke that the manager thinks that what was served is of the same quality as a Michelin starred restaurant. She clearly would not know any better.
Also, I was given a discount for my troubles but I'm sure I was still billed incorrectly (after looking at the online omakase menu).
In short, sub-par service, food is something you can make at home, the environment was not intimate at all and not worth the price you're being charged. My Japanese fiancé does not think that this is a Japanese restaurant.
Japanese with no sushi
After driving 2 hours for Japanese we were disappointed to learn all sushi and nigari and basically any fresh fish had been taken off the menu due to covid??? would have been nice if we were in formed when making the booking or even an email?
Verve was served flat and the corn was too chili to eat no where did it advise it was chili corn? Felt like a real let down.
Nice Vibe
I love the place, the music, the vibe!
The food was great but not spectacular.
Still, we enjoyed what we ordered.
Can’t wait to be back, soon!
Sake, Classic, Delicious & didn’t Disappoint!
Obviously haven’t been to Sake for a good year & have been so many times I have lost count!! It was so good, food was excellent! Lots of new things on the menu but still all our favourites available! Service was outstanding. So good to be back!
Be the first to ReplyGreat looking restaurant but poor food quality and overpriced
The restaurant is beautiful with a great ambience. Service is fantastic and wines great. However, the food was a real let down, especially for the price. We had the Omakase and the only dishes that lived up to the price were the desserts and the brussel sprouts with kimchi dressing. The snapper was as tough as old boots. The shrimp was over-cooked making it rubbery and there was not much flavour in that particular dish. My Wagyu had gristle in it and the okra was slimy making the disk awkward to eat. For $200 per person, the food should be amazing. On top of that we were charged almost $40 (10%) as a surcharge on a Sunday. While I understand restaurants passing penalty rates on during public holidays, I find it just rude on a Sunday. I will say that the presentation of the dishes was superb though. Sorry for the poor review Sake. I really wanted to love you, but you have some wrinkles to iron out before I would return.
Be the first to ReplyWhat happened to Sake?
We’ve been visiting this restaurant for many year so I was shocked how dull and unworthy every single dish was that we were served. Indistinguishable from a food court sushi joint. Previously I always headed out to sake with a sense of joy - a little bit excited even. Our last visit was so disappointing. Even the green tea ice cream was overly sweet like supermarket icecream and without that special matcha confidence that makes you feel like you’re in Japan.
Sorry Sake. Once I loved you. But you’ve lost your spirit and your inspiration, and now it’s over.
Extremely average
Service was miserable, food average, soggy prawns, meat was cold, served sushi with no soy sauce. Expensive for what it is.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is of such high quality
The food is of such high quality and the atmosphere is very relaxed.
Great service, attentive and considerate
