I arrived for Valentine's dinner at a cozy, hidden spot, making it perfect for a romantic date night. The menu featured only prix fixe options for the day, so I didn't get to see the regular offerings. For starters, we enjoyed salt and pepper prawns, which tasted delicious, although they paled in comparison to the size of the beef tartare. The beef tartare itself boasted exceptional flavor and texture, reminding me why it's one of those dishes I appreciate most when dining out, as it's challenging to replicate at home. Our server was attentive, and the rest of the staff were equally pleasant, greeting us with smiles whenever our eyes met.

My wife and I ordered through doordash, getting the salmon and halibut. Both dinners were excellent, but the real surprise was the cheesecake - the best I've ever had - rich and creamy. Would love to know where they got it or if it was done in house.

I had been a loyal customer of this restaurant for quite some time, but my recent experience was beyond disappointing. During my visit, I ordered a cocktail, only to find 5 or 6 fat fruit flies swimming in it. Shockingly, neither the bartender nor the server seemed to notice or care about what was floating in my glass of kir royal. The resolution offered was a bottle of champagne, and there was no apology from the owner personally. My disappointment was so profound that we didn't even consider drinking the offered champagne, as our trust in the restaurant had been shattered. This level of negligence and customer service is simply unacceptable.

Disappointed! Hadn't been here in a while, no need to go back for a while. The food was bland and uninspired. We expected more from one of the more renown places in Palo Alto. This place an old standard that was provided tasty, elegant dining. The service was still attentive and the decoration attractive but the food was flavorless. So many places to go for a marinated skirt steak that actually tastes marinated and seasoned with salt. The lamb ribs came with the slightest touch of harissa for spice, but you really had to look for it. The cocktails were capably made but having to explain that a Boulevardier is a bourbon Negroni is a liitle disappointing at a classier place. We had the highest hopes for a last minute parent-only date-night and we had a great time because of the company, not the food or restaurant. Too bad.

Hidden culinary gem !! Had dinner last night with a friend and all I can say is this place has an beautiful ambiance and delicious food . We got seated near the bar, service was efficient and attentive . Food: 10/10 the server recommended the special for the day we went for it. Seafood pasta with angel hair was absolutely amazing seafood was cooked to perfection not dry not over cooked the sauce was rich and well balanced The pork chop was juicy and tender pair with a creamy corn sauce and grilled veggies absolutely delicious they have and well thought wine menu and great cocktails. Service was wonderful always checking on us very attentive and friendly. If you're in downtown Palo Alto I highly recommend this place . Shoutout to the executive Chef Gildardo Virrueta for the amazing dinner. We will definitely come back since they have seasonal specials.
Be the first to ReplyHow have I not reviewed this restaurant before? Super cozy
How have I not reviewed this restaurant before? Super cozy romantic restaurant with excellent food and amusing waiter. The tuna poke and the beet goat cheese salad are my favorite appetizers. Their lamb is as flavorful as Evvia and Taverna. Definitely get it medium rare, as the chef and our adorable little waiter suggested. The scallops are also perfectly cooked. This restaurant is always busy, but somehow manages to also be a romantic date spot for a first date or even a faux three year anniversary one. Perhaps it's the more traditional ceiling which allows one to actually hear their dining companion. Cacophonous restaurants with high ceilings are only suggested if your dining companion doesn't speak the same language or you don't want to hear what they are saying. Thankfully they have LED table candles, otherwise we would have had to flee in a fiery blaze!
Be the first to ReplyWith work colleagues visiting Palo Alto from out of town,
With work colleagues visiting Palo Alto from out of town, we wanted a special evening, so we all met for dinner on Thursday at St. Michael's Alley. I wasn't sure what to expect since I hadn't been there since well before the pandemic. I was delighted! The entire experience was everything I had hoped for. The setting is casual and intimate, not all spread out but comfortable. We had a series of appetizers, all nice, even the brussel sprouts which some places don't serve well; these were light and flavorful. For the entreé I ordered a special: fresh Halibut served with green olives, tomatoes, asparagus and potatoes, as well as some herbs like basil (not sure) and a richly flavored light-lemony sauce. The flavors were wonderful and well balanced. On a whim I ordered a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and remarkably, the heavy Rhone flavor blended perfectly with the dish. A light sorbet for dessert rounded things out nicely. I said hello to owner Mike and he remembered me from years ago; delighted he is still running the restaurant. Already making plans to return soon.
Be the first to ReplyThe main dining room is cozy.
Service was pretty good. Food wise, I'm not particularly impressed. I mean it's fine but didn't really leave any impression that I want to come back again. There lobster ravioli was delicious and flavorful. My duck breast was so so. The vegetables and fried potatoes really didn't impress me. And the dessert didn't vow me neither. Hence, I
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good and plentiful.
The salmon and the cheesecake were delicious. The service was indifferent and our waiter behaved as if we'd inconvenienced him by sitting at his table. They don't have nearly enough heaters on a cold evening and three years into pandemic-induced outdoor dining, but apparently we didn't look cold enough to warrant being offered a blanket as they did with people at other tables on the patio. 4 stars for food and 2 stars for ambience and service.

Saint Michael's Alley is one of those places that make you wish you lived in the neighborhood so you could just keep coming back here. The ambiance is warm and inviting and you feel like you're at home with family. I visited for a work trip recently and had a delicious chocolate cake here - it was so good I didn't even have time to take a picture to save the memory! I am looking forward to coming back when the weather is warmer and enjoying their patio that looks perfect for people watching.
Be the first to ReplyI thought this was very good.
I came late so didn't get to look at the entire menu but the mussels were good. The salad was delicious. I think I got the spinach one. There were a bunch of appetizers but i football remember. The menu looks seasonal to me. It is small. For entree I had the sea bass. It was really well seasoned. Parking is easy in this area. You might have to walk a bit but it is easy. Overall, I would definitely enjoy coming back. We sat outside and it was a bit chilly but they gave us blankets.

Be the first to ReplyNot the experience it used to be.
.. expensive overall for what we received and service was, truthfully, rather rough and unrefined. Seated in bar area , paper on the tablecloth?! Table was not set, guests handed rolled napkin containing silverware?!. Abbreviated Menu? Waiter was not cued in to his guests at all and rushed our meal. FOOD: Overall, Food was okay but nothing excellent, no item was outstanding. Appetizers: We shared two appetizers, I agree with the previous reviewer JD comments. Pears/ burrata; pouched pears were flavorful but a meager portion overall and the combination not a home run. Mushroom tartlet flavorful but small. Soup: The mushroom soup was good. Entrees: Duck was just okay, not great. Pasta with shrimp was plebeian. Third entree adequate, nothing special. Cauliflower side dish was unremarkable, did not have much flavor. Dessert: Chocolate mousse "pie" was flavorful but not an elegant dessert for an upscale restaurant. Wine by the glass: Pours of wine were not generous especially for $18. Food Overall: None of the offerings were at a level this restaurant used to provide. SERVICE: Surprisingly Disappointing. Not refined, needs training, pushy. Didn't know how to properly serve nor any attention paid to the proper order of foods. Served soup before appetizers?! Felt like we were in a casual bistro with a waiter trying to turn the table instead of in an upscale restaurant. PACING: Terrible. Rushed. Unsophisticated. We hadn't finished our appetizers before the mains arrived and staff insisted, pressured us in serving. Felt rushed through our entire meal. ENVIRON: Bar area seating . Very Disappointing, not at all elegant and uncomfortable. Booth has issues. Guests looking at bottles or a wall / hallway? Completely different vibe. Had asked to be seated in main dining room but steered to bar area as told dining room had a party and it was noisy. A mistake on our part to accept. AMBIANCE / EXPERIENCE QUALITY: Practically non existent, very disappointing . We used to come here for a special evening out as this place had offered a lovely, elegant dining experience. This restaurant used to be a classy place to dine and linger a bit. We brought a special guest here and were disappointed. I doubt we'll be back, I'm sad to say. I agree with previous reviews, if you're looking for a special evening out, go elsewhere. MANAGEMENT FEEDBACK: Manager/ owner; you need to step it up especially if you seat guests in your bar area; Mediocre at best. Booth seats are tired and are way too low for table height, one adult in our party had to sit on a pillow. Replace the booth seat or lower the table. Get rid of the paper on the tables; it overhangs, catches on sleeve cuffs, it's annoying and TACKY! Train your wait staff to set and serve properly, know your menu and properly pace the meal. Appetizers first, not soup! We were rushed by your staff throughout our meal; Slow your pacing down! If you are going to charge this price point the food should be inspired and you should strive to create an ambiance and dining experience for your guests. Eating is one thing, dining is another. I'm sad and disappointed to give such a bad review to formerly one of my favorite local restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyA nice casual place with a cool vibe and excellent food.
They have a great outdoor area which is great if the weather is good. Good craft cocktails too. Highly recommend.

Finally tried this place after having it on my list for so long. Now I'm left wondering why I didn't come sooner! We celebrated my mom's birthday here and thoroughly enjoyed our time here! Our server, Enrique, was incredible and everything we ordered was delicious. I do wish the scallop dish was a bit bigger of portion size, but otherwise no complaints. And definitely order dessert! We loved them!
Be the first to ReplyCame here with my partner for a group event.

Was not worth the price! Overall the food ingredient did not seem fresh.
Be the first to ReplyTonight I had the pleasure of eating at St.
Michael's Alley Restaurant in Palo Alto. I had the best meal I've had in a very l-o-n-g time. The sautéed Mt. Lassen steelhead trout (main course) was served with a fricassee of mushrooms and leeks and was SCRUMPTIOUS !!! Perfectly cooked, super tasty. St. Mike's always has excellent food, but this was an outstanding dish. The lemon tart I had for dessert was a perfect follow-up taste. St. Mike's is now open in both dining areas as well as outdoors, so I can't wait to go again!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and food.
The vibe was a bit dead, and the location is in a weird place, first floor of an apat complex.
Be the first to ReplyI usually dine early and prefer quiet.
My friends could only go out Sunday at 8 last weekend. We got a friendly greeting from the bartender when we arrived and were seated immediately...had a reservation. It was crowded but we could still have a conversation. One waiter served our whole area and was flawless. I had the spaghetti squash and it was heavenly. My friends had the Schezuapn duck and the other had sea bass. Everything was cooked to perfection. Great wine list. The cheesecake, profiteroles, and chocolate bread pudding were shared. BEST desserts ever! Highly recommend.
