Sushi with sustainable seafood, all of it domestic and much of it from local waters, sounds cool at first, but then you might pause and think to yourself, "Hmm, maybe there's a good reason you never see Japanese joints offering raw striped bass from the Hudson River?"It's a legitimate question when a menu is charging $7-$10 per piece of nigiri. Those kinds of prices have been normalized by NYC's gilded glut of omakase temples, but they still add up to a special occasion meal for commoners like yours truly. And so, when I sit down at Rosella, I'm feeling excited about the idea of Empire State sashimi, but also a tiny bit skeptical it'll be worth the hundreds of dollars my party is about to spend.Happily, it turns out that Rosella's raison d'etre is not just unusual but also unusually delicious. The aforementioned bass is a winner, as are all of the other fishes (and shellfishes) that have found their way from Massachusetts, Maine, Louisiana and California to a small space in the East Village.Nigiri, rolls and small plates are all seasoned thoughtfully and creatively but not excessively. Funky fermented condiments, such as housemade white kimchi, make frequent appearances throughout the meal without overwhelming their sea creature companions. The abundant umami is often complemented and accentuated by light and bright elements, such as yuzu, avocado and fresh herbs.Rosella's vibe is sophisticated and professional but also unpretentious, and so with all the other plusses, I'll be making future reservations -- and doing so without the slightest hesitation.
