Rosella New York Reviews from The Last Year
The food was good and overpriced however we did not
The food was good and overpriced however we did not appreciate our server trying to sell us the whole menu like a car salesman. We saw the menu beforehand and knew what we wanted to try. We wanted to order a few things after one another and he basically said no. He made a weird comment about if we wanted to "have dinner" there as if our order was too small? Weird. So if we don't order enough we're not allowed to dine in? The vibes were weird. If you are a rich white person this place will appeal to you. I don't want to hear my server mansplain everything, pitch every roll and drink on the menu, while totally being condescending if you are not interested. Just know what the vibe is when coming in. I just wanted to order food and enjoy my company and not be lectured by the server. After we did not want to do his overpriced omakase or whatever he was selling us, we basically didn't hear from him till he dropped us the bill off before we were even finished eating. I would NOT come here again. If you're trying to listen to a condescending server lecture you this is the place for you. Was not our vibe. He did not feel/ seem genuine, just tryna get your money! They want to come across as up scale but their service says otherwise in my opinion.
Really unique, fresh, and DELICIOUS food.
Everything was incredible. Highly recommend and I can't wait to come back.

Had a wonderful experience here - the sushi quality is incredible and delicious. The salmon avocado and tuna roll are both the best rolls I've had in the city by far. I will say it was very pricey. We thought we would have been full leaving a $300 dinner of nigiri and rolls but still left a little hungry if I had more to spend I would have order 6-8 pieces of nigiri, cold dish, hot dish, and a roll!
Excellent dining experience.
This is former uchi coming through nyc. Food was funky and delicious. Perfect balance
Excellent dinner spot for a special occasion, but the
Excellent dinner spot for a special occasion, but the prices are steep for the portion size. Everything is shareable. We had a tough time deciding on wines and while our server was helpful, knowledgeable, and let us sample, he was a tad pushy toward more expensive options. For food, we had the ceviche (incredible flavors, best thing on the menu), spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, spicy avocado roll (surprisingly flavorful and another sleepy favorite), and ended with the grits, another great, hearty choice. The food was very high quality and fresh, but it is possible to get fish of this quality vastly cheaper around the city. You're paying for the creativity and craftsmanship of the food here. Though it was cold, I was happy to sit outside since the interior is extremely cramped. It feels more like a bar with a hallway around it than a restaurant with proper tables. I'd still highly recommend this place for the food, but watch out if you're trying to leave full.
Small, intimate place with exceptional food.
Do the omakase, pricey but totally worth it!
Rosella isn't bad.
It's just vastly, vastly overpriced for semi-creative Japanese fusion. Dozens of restaurants in the city can do the same thing, and many don't charge as much as Rosella does. This is sushi/Japanese designed for rich white people who can afford to travel to Japan but still can't tell you what omakase means, and the prices--and clientele--reflect that. Why else would Rosella charge $21 for a Spicy Tuna Roll? Six average-sized pieces containing nothing particularly unique besides avocado, jalapeno and spicy mayo. Oh, I forgot, they added an herb or something in there. I didn't realize dill now cost $21. We let our server order for us, and he got us almost everything on the not-very-big menu, so I can say with confidence that we tried the best that Rosella had to offer. If you want sushi--whether traditional or fusion--this is NOT the place to go, as not only are the rolls overpriced, but also there are only three options in their "Little Roll" (re: teeny-tiny 6 pieces) category, and three options in their "Big Roll" (re: average-sized 6 pieces--this ain't futomaki), and none of them are that special. You're better off trying the cold and hot dishes. I quite enjoyed the creative Ceviche, which came with scallops and kiwi, while the Crudo with monkfish liver was great. Just be prepared to fork over $23+ each for portion sizes that would be classified as snacks at other restaurants. Also, why the hell is Laksa on a Japanese fusion menu? Rosella shines best in its desserts. The Miso Carrot Cake was moist, fragrant and beautiful to behold, while the creamy Coconut Sorbet came mixed with ginger and lemongrass with a lovely basil drizzle. Get these, whatever else you do. Bottom line: Rosella will undoubtedly appeal to hype-following foodies who blindly spend on omakases while having no actual idea what omakase means. For true sushi, Japanese and general food aficionados, the main impression it will leave is a dent in your wallet.
