River Twice Philadelphia Reviews from The Last Year
Loved this place! I love little details and from the cups
Loved this place! I love little details and from the cups to the serving bowls to the chopstick stands, I appreciate the attention to details. Now for the food, everything was amazing except I got the add on bread special with caviar and it wasn't worth the price. You don't need it. We did the chefs tasting and everything was phenomenal. My favorite was this crab and grits dish. I could eat it everyday
Waste of money...
River ONCE.... A complete waste of time and money! The food was mediocre. The service was far from ideal, especially if you pay for a prefixed menu for two people - $300 (250 + 50 service fee) plus taxes (no refund!!). Drinks are not included, of course, so our bill for two was almost $450. This was one of the worst experiences, especially for the price. You do expect attention to detail and a real fine dining experience even if it's a more casual style. It felt more like a scam or a rip-off, honestly. So many flaws that I'm even too lazy to describe and put all that into writing. Most likely, the restaurant is going to reply in the same generic way as for others. I can additionally answer in this thread and give my "bullet points" about what exactly was bad. Otherwise, I won't even bother to waste more of my time. My advice - please READ FIRST the BAD REVIEWS; most of what was mentioned earlier was applicable in my case as well.
If you're in Philly, you need to find time to go to River
If you're in Philly, you need to find time to go to River Twice. If you want a meal that makes you believe in the power of really good food that is dependable and somehow nothing that you have ever had before ;and you really can't understand why), this is your spot. When I lived in Philly, I came here for the first time two weeks after it opened and fell in love. I supported with the Mother Rucker burger card and fried chicken buckets to go during Covid, and recently was back in town for a weekend and brought my now husband to the counter so he could understand why Philly will always be my favorite city. I promise it's always that good. Pro tip: sit at the counter. Move your reservation if you have to. Watching them prepare each course and getting to ask questions about the spices and sauces and preparation of each dish makes you feel like you to know what you're doing.
The food was absolutely delicious.
Presentation was amazing. Service was excellent. It's a four course tasting menu
Shocked to see 3.
5 stars, so I feel compelled to leave a review. I did see some people dropped ratings due to the wine pairing and since I do not drink alcohol, this aspect was not factored into my review. I usually do not frequent Philadelphia but just so happened to be in the area with my wife and therefore I wanted to try something new for dinner. When I was searching for restaurants I came across River Twice, which was described as a seafood tasting menu utilizing French and Japanese techniques, I was sold! I did have trouble finding a reservation, however I luckily found a same-day 9:30 slot open on a Saturday night so I quickly grabbed it. As we entered I noticed the restaurant was a small intimate space, which has a counter over seeing the kitchen. As someone who likes to cook myself, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had two seats available at the counter. Once we settled in I took a look at the menu and immediately decided to get a few items to add onto their tasting menu. We opted for the bread course and the ultra-decadent bluefin tuna topped with Uni on Chawanmushi toast. The bread course which came first was a solid hit. They get high quality sourdough bread from a local bakery, which was impeccably paired with Strachiatella cheese and an amazing Tomato Olive tapenade. Our next course was a refreshing bay scallop crudo paired with watercress puree. If I do have a critique on this course I would possible suggest a little more herbal flavoring, as the dill sprigs which came with the course were muted. Then came our optional course of Bluefin tuna toast. As expected you can't really go wrong when using such amazing ingredients, and while it cost $32, it was not exorbitant considering the quality of ingredients being used. The next course, sushi rice, was the highlight of the night for me. A bed of sushi rice, flavored with black vinegar and slightly crisped in a cast iron skillet is topped with a rich potato hollandaise, a piece of cured and smoky eel and then the chef topped it with Perigord Truffle. This dish was amazingly balanced as it had richness from the hollandaise, earthiness from the truffle, a salty component from the eel and the vinegar in the rice helped cut through everything. This was a Michelin star quality dish. We finished the savory courses with Halibut, on top of carrots and celeriac, in a sauce made with clam broth. This was a good course which was highlighted by the flavorful vegetables. The dessert course was a play on a creamsicle which has very nice textures and citrus flavors. They definitely captured the nostalgia of eating a creamsicle. All in all it was a pleasant experience and I would recommend River Twice to anyone who enjoys seafood. While I do realize that $75 a person is not cheap and one might require a few extra courses, this is reasonable considering the high costs of good quality ultra-fresh seafood.
I hemmed and hawed about what to rate River Twice, a place
I hemmed and hawed about what to rate River Twice, a place that had been on my list for ages and one I had heard such accolades about. I ended with 3-stars, and here's why: - Food: it was good, don't get me wrong. But it wasn't anything extra or special. It was good, but exactly what you would expect. - Service: everyone was lovely. Just nothing special or extra but everyone was very kind and helpful. - Wine pairing: everyone has their own thoughts and preferences. However, I will say the pairing was a total miss. They didn't work with the food (or there was a much better option that should have been selected) and they weren't really special. The staff seemed to need more of an education on the wines as well when asking for more detail. - Cost: this was a big one. Our meal was not worth the $350 price tag. Honestly I was shocked and really bummed. I expected so much from the meal, and it just didn't hit the mark for that cost. TBD if we'll be back, but perhaps. We'll see.
I'm not sure how this place only has 3.
5 stars... The food, service and ambiance were impeccable! Marissa was attentive and knowledgeable about everything from the food to the after dinner drinks ordered! Sitting at the chef's counter and watching everything being made was a real joy. The music was great and everyone from the staff to the diners seemed so happy to be there! The burger and scallop toast were so good, we actually got two of each. Whether you want the tasting menu or a la carte options, you can't go wrong. We already made a reservation to come back in a few weeks!
My husband and I decided to come to River Twice as a date
My husband and I decided to come to River Twice as a date night back in 2021. Back when we did the tasting menu, it was 7 courses for $85 but I noticed that the tasting menu currently offered has changed a little, now 4 courses for $75. We sat outside for our meal, which was pleasant for the nice weather that day, but I think next time we'll have to grab a table inside. The few glimpses of the interior I saw on the way to the restroom were really lovely; the dining room felt very welcoming and I was in love with the brown and gray-toned aesthetic. I thought that the tasting menu overall was very good. I liked all of the courses outside of their meat courses, which was a little dry and could have been better seasoned. But generally speaking, I liked their choice of ingredients and how the flavors went together. The plateware that the courses were served in were as beautiful as the presentation and, as we went through our meal, I would take note of the brands that manufactured the dishware for future reference haha. We decided to add on a cheese course but the flavor of the cheese wasn't really to our liking. Because I don't like chocolate, the original chocolate dessert course was swapped out for grilled figs with honey. That course was truly a highlight for me because they were the freshest figs I ever had and the honey was a bit crystalized similar to that of the top layer of creme brulee, which is my favorite part. Would I go back? : I would go back. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. Because River Twice is regularly changing up their menu, I think it's hard to predict if you'll consistently have a positive experience every time. I did notice that the reviews I've seen on Yelp recently have been more positive compared to when I went so maybe the changes made to the tasting menu improved the quality of the experience since.
This place has very good food.
Don't get me wrong here. It's just obscenely expensive for such a small amount of food. We left hungry, which is never a good sign, even after getting the add on might bread course (which is totally worth it btw). The service was impeccable, and the wine selection was nice (they have a sommelier on staff which is amusing in such a small restaurant). We also loved how the tables have drawers for silverware in them - super cute and space-saving. We have had some really awesome fancy American food in Philly, some less expensive but others more than this price point (eek), and I feel like River Twice was just average for a big sticker price. Will I go back when someone else is paying? Sure! But I don't think I'll be footing the bill myself, despite its proximity to my house.
After seeing some negative reviews, I was hesitant to
After seeing some negative reviews, I was hesitant to follow through with our reservation. I'm so glad we went. Our dinner was wonderful. The food was perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented and the service was both pleasant and excellent. We were happy enough that we left an additional tip on the well posted 20% that they add for the full staff.
Food isnt good under-seasoned.
waiters were good, manager lady not so much had a attitude. Very pricey and small portions. Sushi place before was better
Best restaurant in Philly this trip :)
I have been eating out in Philadelphia for over 30 years. In that time, I have watched the Philadelphia food scene grow from “meh” - think steak houses, to where we are now, where I am literally spoiled for choice. Last night, I had the pleasure of dining here with my friend and his son. His son is a bit of a foodie, and he declared the meal to be one of the best he has ever had in his life. I am fortunate to have eaten at some very interesting places around the world and I have to say that this meal was up there with some of the best I have ever eaten. The combination of flavours and textures were outstanding on all of the dishes, even the dishes that did not cater to my specific preferences. I am not a big burger fan, but even I can tell that that menu item was exceptional. We even asked for a takeaway one for my friend’s other son who was not able to be there . Service was totally charming, attentive, knowledgeable, and with a twinkle… Obviously, we had the tasting menu, but we also added all of the suggested additions which made for a full blown experience. There seems little point in listing what we ate because by its very nature, a tasting menu changes on a regular basis. Suffice to say that based on last night‘s performance, we would trust chef and his brigade to deliver consistently and confound expectations. The price point is reasonable for what you get and I am sure that next time I am back in Philly, regretfully not until next year, I will be a return visitor.
After seeing some pretty positive reviews of River Twice, I
After seeing some pretty positive reviews of River Twice, I decided to make a date night out of it and go for their 4 course menu. My immediate thought after stepping into the restaurant is cozy. It's intimidate, yet casual if that makes sense? The open kitchen and family friendly vibe were a plus. My partner and I decided to add on the night bread and oysters with trout roe in addition to our 4 course. It was a tad too much food, but we made it fit. Service was pretty good throughout, although I did get a hint of dissatisfaction from our server at the beginning with my confusion with the menu. However, throughout the experience, our glasses were filled, pacing was excellent, and utensils and plates were cleared in an orderly fashion. I would also like to note, I really liked their dining sets. Reminds me of Japanese pottery. Mighty Bread (5/5): the sourdough paired with that vinegar butter was one of my favorite bites of the night. The butter also had a hint of sweetness to it? I could eat this all day. Oysters (2.5/5): Pretty fishy, especially with the trout roe. I was really hoping for a smooth and refreshing bite because of the strawberry and blood orange, but the gochujang and fishy flavor overpowered those delicate flavor profiles. Maine mussel tostados (4/5): pretty nice blend of flavors. I thought it was clever to use an eggplant miso purée as the base. I also appreciated the salsa dollops which gave each bite a kick of sensation. Heirloom corn grits (3/5): honestly, each item by itself is good, but together, it just left me a little confused. The truffle was a bit overpowering and it threw off the texture. You also get hit with lots of truffle when you go to breathe as you bite. I almost forgot there were grits and a piece of eel. The eel, to me, could have been seared or seasoned a tad better. And the grits were actually pretty good once I selectively finished the truffle to get a true sense of each ingredient. But overall, grits, eel, and truffle are a bit of a stretch to put together. I get the idea, but maybe needs to be better executed. Tilefish with charred caraflex (4.5/5): my tastebuds were a bit overpowered from the truffle for this lighter entree. After cleansing my palette halfway through, this dish was quite smooth. The shellfish butter, charred and seasoned vegetable, paired with the light fish was a well composed bite. If you have the fish by itself, I would think it's slightly under seasoned, but pair it with the vegetable and it's the perfect amount of seasoning. Plumcots with white chocolate and oats (3.5/5): for me, there was a little too much going on. The chocolate foam and candied oats was a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe if I had the chance to dip into the foam vs it covering the entire dish. The sweetness from the chocolate and candy slightly took away from the fruit, which by itself is subtle. For me, the plumcot felt like an after thought. It's a shame because I really like plumcots. Overall, I think it was a good showing by River Twice. I think they need to tweak a few things in their menu, but I think they have potential, especially after interacting with the chefs at the counter. They are all super friendly and always served with a smile. I'm glad I got a counter seat, but probably would do a table because it seemed more cozy. Plus, most of the cooking was done probably 10 feet away from where most of the counter seating was, so you didn't get much of an experience or conversational piece.
Went for a birthday celebration and it was incredible.
Wasn't a huge fan of the corn grits, but that's just personal preference. Every dish was so delicious and inventive. Their current menu (mussel tostada, tilefish) is only there for another week but I'm sure the next menu will be just as good. We added on the robia crudo and the oysters which were both fantastic too. Service was incredible, with a few freebies for the occasion. Go!
Don't Let the Casual Vibe Fool You
This is serious fine dining in a hipster disguise. Surprised no reviews here in over a year. In a transitional neighborhood off the tourist beat. Bad news is there is no menu choice; everyone gets the 4 course set menu, seafood-focused, with option of additions. Good news is every one of the dishes was exceptional, even the one that sounded questionable as described. Real talent in the kitchen behind the bar. Extra credit for Grateful Dead on the playlist. Most highly recommended and well worth the price for this quality.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
Banned from Resy for selling reservations- Do we have a rat on our hands???
I am new to this app and started off by selling a polo bar reservation and then quickly sold one more reservation. Not long after I received emails from Resy saying all my reservations are cancelled and I am being banned from Resy for life. How could this have possibly happened without a rat telling Resy that I sold the reservation. I need some advice on this situation and let’s catch the rat!
Give the best answerBid and Buy Instantly
I have a big ongoing and it also shows someone is working on my bid. Today I see there is a " Buy Instantly " option at my portfolio showing same price I've bid for a reservation. I'm a bit confused, since my money has already been deducted from my credit card for the bid, do I need to pay one more time for the Buy Instantly? If I choose Buy Instantly, can I cancel my bid ( while someone is working on it )? Thanks!
