Scacciaguai in Barga, Italy is the BEST restaurant I have eaten at in recent memory! My wife and I were headed to a destination wedding in Alba, Italy from California. We decided to take a little R&R near Barga. The concierge at our hotel strongly recommended Scacciaguai. I am always a bit suspect of concierge recommendations particularly in Europe. I was so wrong! The service was friendly and engaging. Each course we were served we kept saying, "I think this might be the best _____ I have ever had!" My wife gave me a small taste of her soup and it was so good I ordered an extra course when she wouldn't share more. We loved watching the chefs work on closed circuit TV. The ambiance was great...lively but not too lively.

We randomly stumbled upon Scacciaguai after a long and aimless (but lovely) hike through Barga's town and through the inner castle area. We had trekked up and down the steep steps for hours and were starving. We passed the store front and stopped because the space looked so nice inside. They have an older but really cool looking espresso machine pushed right against the front window. The ceilings are arched and low with beautiful mood lighting throughout the space. Most restaurants in smaller cities that we happen upon are initially an unsurety for us as my wife has a dairy allergy and I am vegetarian. We sat at the bar and first ordered drinks while looking over the menu. The owner served us himself. He was very warm and welcoming and assured us they could accommodate our dietary restrictions. So we decided to give it a try. This is a classic Italian restaurant. However, they had a few Asian inspired dishes, which surprised me. We were excited by this and ordered spaghetti with vegetables, which tasted similar to a ramen dish without the soupy liquid. We also got a miso carrot soup. Both of these were dairy free. I ordered the ravioli in butter sauce and roasted potatoes for myself. All of these items were excellent. To point out, they also had sweet & sour onions as well as a sushi appetizer on the menu. Both obviously very Asian inspired. A couple other notable things about the space itself. The entire restaurant, including the bathrooms were spotless clean. There's also a TV monitor on the wall in the dining area that shows live footage of the kitchen. So you can watch your food being cooked. Have never seen this anywhere before, which was a fun addition. The staff gave us great input on the town after asking what to do in the city. We finished our meal and ordered espresso. Was an excellent experience, finished by the owner offering us Limoncello as we were getting up to leave. We would definitely come here again when in town.
Be the first to ReplyFood was excellent and enough to share with my husband.
The owner came around and gave us explanation of Pinot Nera we ordered and explained how truffles were in season. We finished all of our dishes. We got the truffle pasta first course, beef as second course with a side of vegetable soufflé. We are staying at the Renaissance and it was close to the hotel. The restaurant was really unique and quaint. We sat on a small porch with two other tables but weren't crowded. Would definitely recommend.

This meal was amazing. Truffle, truffle and more truffle followed by a dark chocolate soufflé filled with melted white chocolate and a mozzarella cheesecake that is like nothing we've ever had before. Top it off with extremely quick, attentive and gracious service. This is one place not to be missed.

Be the first to ReplyOne of our favorites in Barga.
A short walk up the cobblestone walk to what I call a home style meal. They have several tv monitors so you can watch the chef prepare meals. I like this as I enjoy cooking. We had the cheese ravioli with a wonderful puréed red pepper sauce and the filet. Both are exceptional and are a great combination to share. The fresh bread comes with your meal as well as a complimentary glass of champagne. Order a bottle of local wine and enjoy the evening in a beautiful restaurant with wonderful food.

Typical tuscan ceiling, the tiles on the side Room are from the original Latteria that used to be there. As starter, eggs with tartufo Neri were Just perfect. As secondo piatto a wonderful bisteca Fiorentina. Great Chianti wine to match the bisteca. Service is top notch, you feel like part of the family!

Thank you to Trip Advisor for showing this as the top dinner restaurant in Barga. Come on Yelpers- there are only a few reviews for this gem. Great hospitality, good with English too. Menu is in English. Located in the pedestrian only area of Barga. It would be only a local secret if not for the hundreds of reviews on Trip Advisor. Crowd seemed to be split half & half locals and tourists. The food was great and extremely reasonably priced as well. Filet Mignon with shaved truffles for only 22€ each. The Primi burata filled ravioli was wonderful. Sides of roasted potatoes and vegetable soufflé were excellent as well. Shared a decent bottle of Brunello, had two desserts, two cappuccinos and it all was 110€. Not to mention it is their standard practice to serve glasses of Prosecco upon arrival. Evviva Scacciaguai!

Quite possibly one of the most magical spectacular exquisite and humbling meal of my life. This is a very small family owned and operated establishment in Barga usually rated the 3rd or 4th best spot in town but it far exceeds anything in Italy. All items are created by the two brothers and everything is seasonally fresh. You can see meals being prepared on the kitchen camera tv screens. You must eat here if you have the privilege.
