What having a Michelin star should be about
This restaurant is superb in every way - luxurious surroundings matched by impeccable service and sublimely excellent food. Have visited a few times and it NEVER disappoints - if you want to feel thoroughly spoiled from when you walk in the door to when you leave then this is an excellent place to go.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent restaurant for a special occasion.
One of the top restaurants in Edinburgh. Fabulous tasting menus and wines. Attentive service. The chef is willing to modify dishes to accommodate food allergies. Definitely deserves the Michelin Star.
Be the first to ReplyFood and service, both excellent
We barely reached Edinburgh and came to Wishart to celebrate my kid's 14th birthday. Nope, we were not exactly dressed for the restaurant but their service was warm and impeccable. The food was tasty and stylish. We had a 7-course vegetarian tasting menu but by the fifth course, we were full. Everything was unique in taste and carefully done. The risotto was a bit on the heavy side (or perhaps because we were quite full by then). There was a surprise birthday special for my kiddo and he was thrilled. The wait staff even gave him a tour of the kitchen where he could personally thank all the Chefs and kitchen staff.

Another wonderful meal. We chose the lunchtime tasting menu, which was absolutely lovely. Each course was presented beautifully and also tasted superb. The staff are very pleasant and totally professional without being overbearing. The restaurant was packed, not surprising as you can’t fault it.

I had been here some many years ago and found it exceptional. I could not fault the food, it was all brilliantly cooked, presented and exceedingly divine in flavours as well as textures. On this occasion, although the food was exceptional as before, the place just lacked atmosphere. I felt the tables were very close together compared to when I first visited so it felt as if it was ‘get as many place settings as possible’ scenario. Now, I realise that COVID no doubt had a very hard effect within the hospitality industry and hope that the space between the table is to make up the lack if income from the issues of lockdown and expect that they will give a bit more space between tables in the near future as it was a case of whispering or leaning forward so the conversation wouldn’t be too loud to annoy the other tables. There was one particular dish that I could not make out a subtle pleasant lingering flavour and when I asked, the server was more than happy to oblige in providing the ingredients as well as a sample of the ingredient (although the ingredient was not the one detected) it was a little bit of extra special service and very much appreciated (for those intrigued, it was lemon balm). For information, we opted for the taster menu and each dish was as delicious and individual as the next, each following through nicely onto the next. Would I return again…absolutely!
Be the first to ReplyA good place to go
We have been here with friends and getting a reservation was quite difficult. I admit the food was good and first class raw materials. But coming from Italy this is not so unusual for me and the prices here are so high that I gave no five stars review. Had market menu.
Be the first to ReplyNice food, OK ambience
I will caveat this review in that obviously the food was fantastic as it’s Michelin Starred, and this is the view of a 31 year old that may have different preferences to other diners. I found the food really nice, one of the fish dishes I wasn’t too keen on but overall some of the starter dishes, and elements of the dishes were very very good. I found the restaurant staff really good as you’d expect, from extremely attentive. It did have an older ambience, older style and one of those places where you felt like conversation couldn’t really flow that well as it was so formal, sometimes it’d be quiet from other tables so you’d try to be quiet (could have just been the people dining that night). Overall, food was great but if I was paying full price (we had a voucher), I’d probably feel as if I hadn’t quite got value for money as it was very expensive. I’d think some people would still view this as value for money though and be after that type of experience.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely fabulous. Always tasty delicious food.
As you can see from the photos all tasted as good as it looked. The only thing I did not enjoy was the minger cheese it was quite unpleasant. I love cheese and this is the first cheese I did not like at all.
Be the first to ReplyLovely lunch in Leith
My partner had mentioned Martin Wishart restaurant a couple of times so I surprised him with a lunchtime visit. Everything we ate was very good with our fish main a standout dish. Service was excellent and they cater for dietary requirements which made life much easier. On our Wednesday lunch visit the restaurant was full and there is a nice atmosphere without the need for incessant background music. Even our set lunch menu came with a selection of amuse bouche though the bill can creep up. We had 2 glasses of champagne, 2 glasses of wine each -+ the set menu and spent an enjoyable 2+ hours on a meal which came to £220 including service. Great place - good fun - we would happily go again.
Be the first to ReplyA real treat
We were both very excited about this dinner, and we weren’t disappointed. We both had the tasting menu. I did have some apprehension as I’d never eaten sweetbreads, and I would never choose snails on a menu but the former were delicious and the latter, prepared as ravioli were little so my texture concerns were allayed. The decor is a little on the (very) posh airport lounge side, but I loved the sculpture of the man catching the moon. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I particularly appreciated the sommelier providing advice on which wines matched my preferences without any attempt to up sell. It’s definitely a choice for a special occasion but a great experience.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Tasting Menu
The food is - as you might expect - totally exceptional.
I’d recommend the tasting menu. My wife had the vegetarian option and that was outstanding too.
The staff are wonderful, explaining each dish as it comes to the table.
I lost count of the number of courses - I think its 6 or so with amuse bouche and petits fours on top.
Despite some of the dishes literally being a mouthful, we were totally satisfied.
Its pricey - its Michelin star - expect to pay a bare minimum of about £150 per head - and probably £200-£250 if you add bubbly, cocktails etc.
The food is the star of the show here and its quite literally genius.
So so
You never get a second chance to make a first impression. The decor is very bland. There are no tablecloths. That said you don’t go to a restaurant for the design but for the food. The canapés were good. The rabbit was ok. Just found the whole experience underwhelming.

Visited Restaurant Martin Wishart on a Friday evening of a weekend trip to Edinburgh with my wife. We had the tasting menu with matched wines and it is not hard to see why it has had a Michelin star for 21 years. Each course was delicious and paired with interesting wines with full explanation of everything on the plate and in the glass. Staff were attentive and friendly and special thanks to Florence for looking after us so well. We had a fabulous evening. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful lunch experience
Last minute lunch booking and wow, it did not disappoint.
Wonderful staff and service made the whole experience even better. Everything about the food was superb from the delicious bread and toppings , amuse bouche which were unbelievably good amd the main event every mouthful devoured.
Thank you so much for giving our family this amazing experience. I will definitely be back
A disappointing experience
We visited this restaurant during a visit to Edinburgh to celebrate our wedding anniversary . We had read the reviews and looked forward to our evening at MW. The whole experience was seriously underwhelming .We have enjoyed many meals at Michelin starred restaurants . Sadly not this one !
We chose the market menu at £95 . Overall the food was good but not exceptional.Service was brisk and efficient but lacked warmth and engagement .
Decor is bland and brown - overall quite dreary and dated. No candles ,no flowers ,no tablecloths, wooden cutlery stackers on the table . Thinly veneered tables felt cheap; ours was chipped at the edge . It felt like everything had been pared back as a cost cutting exercise .
Our experience didn’t represent value for money; we wouldn’t recommend. It’s the sum total of the experience that matters when one dines at a Michelin star restaurant and in this respect this restaurant was singularly lacking .
Best fixed price lunch
For twenty years, I have been boring people about Le Gavroche being the best fixed price lunch on the planet. Well, move over Michel Roux Jr because Martin Wishart has taken your crown. Today we had the most extraordinary lunch. The four amuses bouches were perfection. The sourdough with tapinade, creamed butter and garlic tomatoes was extraordinary. The foie gras was sublime, but the star of the show was the best rabbit dish I have ever tasted. Desserts were exquisite. The best £48.50 I have ever spent.
Be the first to ReplySecond Visit - underwhelmed
My partner and I had the Market Menu lunch and I had the paired wine to match. We were at this restaurant about 3 years ago and the experience blew me away so I was really looking forward to another fine dining experience. Unfortunately this time I was totally underwhelmed. The food was ‘nice’, nothing outstanding but perfectly fine. The paired wine package was also disappointing- three very small glasses of wine for £55. The staff weren’t as attentive as our last visit. I can’t quite put my finger in it, but they just seemed to lack the ‘sharpness’ of the staff at our previous visit. For a lunch bill of £270 I would have expected something a bit more……….
Be the first to ReplyGreat food tour 2022
New to this but on a restaurant tour of Edinburgh for the weekend.
Great food and service and blew us away. We have come from London and we will certainly be back. Can't wait!!!!!
Every Aspect Of Our Meal Was Amazing
We dined here on Thursday night and I'm still thinking of all the amazing dishes we had. The service was excellent, friendly but professional. Loved the 4 canapés to start - each one of them was an explosion of taste and a great way to kick off the night. The 4 petit fours at the end were also delicious and a great way to finish the night. Such a complete contrast to a nearby Michelin star restaurant that we dined in recently which served one canapé and one petit four which summed up the entire dinner - disappointing. We would highly recommend booking to eat at Martin Wishart and we look forward to doing so ourselves when we are next in Edinburgh. Thank you for a memorable evening.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal
Another excellent meal at Martin Wishart. We had the tasting menu with matching wines. Some great new additions to the menu since our last visit. Great service from front of house team to match the excellent cooking from the kitchen.
